I'm fairly new to HS but know the ropes well. I need a Thalnos to complete my control shaman deck and am thinking I should DE Velen to do so.. any comments? Opinions?
If you don't plan on playing Priest much, it's an easy decision. I've DE'd a few legends I got from arena packs, ones I knew I wouldn't make use of. It's just some free dust.
I wouldn't DE a legendary (unless obviously if I had more than one copy), be it golden especially. My point of view is this: I enjoy this game, so I'll keep on playing it for a decent amount of time, and I'll eventually play all kinds of decks, heroes, cards. DE a legendary sets me back on that, while the fact thats golden diminishes the chances to re open it.
(also, my only legendary atm is Onyxia , dont think I have most of legendaries to say that safely)

Do you want immediate gratification or later sense of completion. Valen is pretty bad compared to the best legendaries. Can you stand the thought of never having a golden valen ever again? There's a lot to be said for DEing now and improving your immediate play experience. It's a personal choice that only you know the answer to - both options are correct, a) gold cards are rare and waiting to craft is the most efficient way of building your collection, b) gold cards are functionally useless and you it will take you a long time to get the cards you actually want otherwise.
I would disenchant that sucker right away. I mean I'll confess right here that I actually crafted Velen for myself, but if you don't have all of the legendaries you need - a golden one is like a free ticket to pick any legendary you want.
"I am Richard, Chief Warlock of the Brothers of Darkness, Lord of the Thirteen Hells, Master of the Bones, Emperor of the Black, Lord of the Undead, and The Mayor of a little village up the coast."
I get don't those who suggest to hold on ... just in case ... do you live by just-in-case rules too?
I'm a photographer, and always on the look out for new gear. there are those who suggest that you don't buy X now, because Y will be out in a few months, and others who say get what you 'need' now! if you hold out every time for the next big thing, you'll always be waiting.
I know I'm probably the minority here but I think it's a waste to disenchant any card you don't have duplicates of. For all you know Velen will be the greatest thing ever in the new meta in Naxx and we'll all have to bow down to our new priest overlords.
And while Thalnos is definitely a good card now (I actually have a golden one) I think he's just easily... replaced. Hell, even a Kobold Geomancer or whatever replaces him very efficiently and doesn't die to a druid's hero ability or mage's fireblast (1hp vs 2hp). But I'm not trying to make a case for a Kobold here. The card draw off of Thalnos is nice and why he's a 1/1. I just don't think that card is good enough to warrant throwing away another legendary. Since disenchanting a legendary to make another legendary is effectively spending 1200 dust in almost all cases, even if it's a golden legendary.
Also, I'd never DE a golden card. I feel like I'd feel nothing but regret the day after.

It just feels wrong to DE a golden legendary haha.. Although i feel this card isnt too good and I need a Thalnos
i'd do it with no regrets

The trouble is the moment you disenchant him and get a new legendary, that's the legendary you're going to pull in your next pack. ;D
DO IT!

DE, get a card you want and will enjoy playing.

You can always craft it later if it so happens to become a beast in the meta.
They're only cards ... having a gold doesn't make it any better
But then you spend 1600 dust getting a card back that you already had before. Point held.
