I've been playing hearthstone for about 6 months now, i have a decent collection and for a large portion of this time, i have kept away from arena. I tried the free arena run once and i didn't do particularly well. (2 wins...) When I tried again a few weeks back, i got 4 wins. for all my effort I got poor rewards (Some dust, some random card and a pack) and although I Made some Profit, I felt as though I had wasted my time.
The thing is, lately I've been hearing about how amazing arena is now TGT is live, and how easy it is to get more gold, but I'm unsure as to whether its actually worth the 150 gold admission fee, or if its better spending the gold on guaranteed packs. my friends always tell me that they like the system, but I'm not a fan of RNG or improvised decks.
If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. if you have vastly different opinions, please don't mock or boast, 'Cause that's never helpful.
I've been playing for like 10 months and used only Arena to build my collection for the first half year I was playing. I'm a strong proponent. You're guaranteed at least a pack, and don't have the inherent disadvantage of having fewer legendaries or whatever as you would in constructed.
I think arena is very competitive and I would only recommend it to players who can comfortably make rank 10 or better in constructed.
I kept focusing on learning how to draft and understanding the mana curve of each class. But the big difference maker for me at least was playing lots of constructed games at rank 5+ and learning the strengths and weakness of each class at a high level.

If you don't care what pack you're going to get, Arena is almost always a net gain. I don't think averaging above 3 wins is that difficult. I feel like people make out Arena to be more competitive than it actually is.
While I'm not phenomenal, I definitely average over 3 wins and I recently got pushed back to rank 17 in constructed. So take that for what you will. Anything 4 or above is net gain other than loss of card pack choice.
I love Arena. It is the best value for your gold and money, however, you have to commit a lot of time to it. When you get 7 plus wins and you get a free arena run plus extra gold, it is the best.
You won't get any better at arena by not playing arena. Playing arena as an inexperienced player is an investment for the future, even though your rewards right now will be weak.
When I started playing hearthstone, I simply bought classic packs until I began to get 40 dust packs in a row, then I moved to arena. Unless you can get at least 3 wins in arena and get back 50 gold, not really worth it.
Three wins is extremely easy to achieve if you use tier lists (I highly recommend Heartharena). Also, watch Kripp's videos on how to maintain tempo, board presence and make value plays in arena. Arena requires a different mindset than constructed and come to think of it I'm more and more inclined to quit constructed altogether (for a while at least) and try to achieve infinite arena. I think my biggest mistake as a newcomer to the game might have been that instead of trying to get better at arena I cowered and just bought packs for 100 gold.
Your beginnings may will be hard but keep in mind that:
1) you'll never learn if you don't try
2) once reach the 3-3 tier (three victories) you can be sure you've gained at least as much as you'd when buying a regular pack. Plus, 3 victories = 10 gold and possibly a daily quest so you can actually save time if you play it right.
3) If a noob like me can average at 5.5 wins after just a couple of months of practice, so can anyone else
4) if you get rekt (and by god you ARE gonna get REKT at some point) at least you won't get salty that somebody else threw money at the game to buy all the cards you can't afford.
5) It feels so good once you get your first 7* wins and then 12 wins because the rewards are friggin' amazing and it's comparable to reaching rank 5 and legend in constructed respectively.
* 7 wins is the threshold at which you recieve more gold than you spent on the arena so in theory averaging 7 wins in arena allows you to do infite runs and that's not even counting daily quests.
Thanks for the suggestions everybody. Although I've never gotten higher than rank 8 in constructed, I want to give arena another few tries. I did some research on the rewards, and some look very good... but that's always dependant on performance!
I'll give it a shot, but personally, arena feels kinda like this weeks tavern brawl in some ways (but you would know what cards you have).

A lot of good advice is given above. All I'd echo is, you aren't going to get better by not playing.
If you can get good at Arena the rewards are excellent for a player who's still building their collection so although you're not seeing instant gains you will in a very short space of time.
I think the variable everyone keeps forgetting in their analysis is do you enjoy arena?
Frankly it doesn't sound like you do.
If, like me, you enjoy arena it is amazing value! Given the pack reward is fixed, you are essentially paying 50g to do the funnest thing Hearthstone has to offer and more often than not you will win more than that 50g back in prizes.
If you don't enjoy arena you are paying 50g and then have to grind for a couple of hours to hopefully recoup what you paid, probably slower than if you just grinded the gold on the ladder.
That's the big difference. As a means to an end arena isn't worth it until you get very good at it. If you see its an end in itself it is very good value.
i have generally really improved at Hearthstone while playing arena. On top of that Arena is for a collector profitable even at 0 wins, since you get a pack + 25 dust. So 2 0 wins arena runs net me 2 packs + 50 dust, whereas 3 packs (before TGT) would net just plain 120 dust.
It's not only not worth it for inexperienced players, it's totally not worth playing arena PERIOD. For you to break even, you have to win at least six times. If you are just playing for packs, just do the smart thing and just buy packs from the store. Makes more economical sense.
i find arena very boring to play compared to constructed, but that's just my personal opinion on the mode.
in terms of efficiency of getting gold/packs,i'd say that once you can consistently get at least 5 wins on average per arena run(which is very easy to do),then it is worth playing arena for that purpose.otherwise, not really.
but seriously, arena is easy, just use any decent card tier list to guide you during the draft and do value trades 90% of the time and the rest comes through experience.
Arena is a very good way to expand your collection, and even if you're not that good at it, the experience you gain from each run is pretty nice. I don't like how long arenas take though, and having to play the same deck a lot of times doesn't really fit me (I usually rotate between 3~5 decks when laddering), so I'm usually playing constructed.
I find arena is more of a test of skill than playing constructed and is the real game. You got to do some deck building which is the true test of intelligence and skill. Ladder is all netdecking garbage.
I'm surprised at how helpful the community has been so far, but I'm even more suprised about divided this thread is. i was expecting there to be a mass of one sided comments. I'm not complaining though, it's good if there are conflicting arguements. seeing both sides is often the best way to decide.
After a (Very lucky) 9 Win run, i see why arena is held so high amongst others. the rewards were great, but is is so painfully time consuming. i'm probably only ever going to play arena when i have large breaks, but it offers greater rewards than constructed (Plus you don't get Mech-Decked to oblivion as often). I would however like arena more if there were more spells included. all i ever got were minions.

6 months is a long time already.
I think it's time you play arena. everyone starts off inexperienced in arena. You'd be better off play-wise, collection-wise.

150 is fine I believe. You get a pack no matter what, which is a 100 gold value so in the end you're paying 50 gold for a chance at better prizes.

Get stuck in!
Unbowed. Unbent. Unbroken.
watch good arena streamers you can learn from them. just continue to play arena you'll get better for sure after sometime.

The only cancer in Hearthstone is its community.
A pack contains over 100 dust on average.
Just sayin'

Just made another arena run. 2-3.
Never going to do Arena again.
