I really wish to play a bunch of arena, but I also like constructed and need some of those cards to make better decks. is it possible or do you have to be an incredible player that I am not?
The game is designed for arena to be a gold sink. You can do a run at a profit (gold wise) but you won't win that often. You eventually need to stop laying arena and horde your gold... which admittedly takes for freakin' ever.

Oh.... I knew that but well damn. I have one wing of naxx, but I also need more cards from classic... Sooo much to do :/
You really have to average at least seven wins for arena to be profitable, aside from quest rewards, and to do that you need to be very good.
I've been averaging a smidge over four wins and, doing about four arena runs per week and with quest rewards I'm nore or less breaking even. I'm certainly not saving up any gold, though.
If your aim is to save gold then Play mode is your best bet, although you'll hardly be raking in the money.
You should always re-roll your dailies to get the higher gold ones or total dominance (100 gold quest for 7 wins in ANY mode, you can play your friend, if he lets u win 7 times u get 100 gold..lol)
Arena doesn't give classic packs anymore, so I'm not sure it is the F2P savior for new players right now. You'll only be getting dust for crafting after a certain point of mech crap. At least you can dust many of the legends without feeling guilty.
Even for high-averaging players, the main thing you gain from arena is packs and dust. So it saves you gold on packs. It doesn't exactly hand out the gold, since you have to keep re-investing it. The rising gold total rides mostly on quests and not spending on packs.

No, No you can not play your friend to get gold (unless you know how to queue up to him on ladder 7 times in a row)
I don't know about playing your friend but you can get wins for the 7 win quest by doing the class challenges in the adventures. I did that twice with BRM. Next time you get the quest try it out. Go do the Nax hunter challenge or the BRM mage challenge for random laughs and easy wins for your quest.

I don't think I've ever had the total domination quest myself, but it does specify "ALL" play modes, so should include the various solo types. You should be able to just go up against the novice AI with an aggressive deck and knock out seven wins in about ten minutes.

I've had it multiple times. You CAN challenge a friend and have them concede 7 times.

So I have about 400 gold saved up, should I just keep saving, then start with arena?
Right at the beginning arena is definitely going to cost you more gold than it makes you, so I would ask which you would prefer:
I want have a chance to play around with different mixes of cards that aren't in my collection yet
I want to build towards a specific type of deck and need gold to get there
If you're more interested in the first, arena is definitely the way to go. Your collection will grow more slowly and will lean a bit heavily towards GvG, but you'll get to experiment with all sorts of cards and get a good feel for the trading game.
If you're more interested in the second, arena is probably the wrong direction to head. You only need 3-4 wins per run to be getting your packs at the normal price, but they'll be GvG packs which don't normally do new players as much good as classic (unless you're going for mech mage).
I'm going to repost what I wrote in another thread:
Arena is a good way to practice and get better at the game in general but keep in mind you have to get good at it before it's really profitable. If you can go 3/3 you'll get a GvG pack, ~30 gold and 20-25 more dust/gold or a random rare or common card which basically means you beak even on value for your 150g spent for the arena run with the downside of not being able to pick the type of pack you got. At 6 wins you get a pack + ~80 gold and ~55gold/dust or a random card. If you get the random gold you almost make back your cost to play the arena on top of the GVG pack but that is random to get the gold and you still aren't actually netting a straight gold profit before considering gold from completing quests. 7 wins is where you are finally guaranteed to make back the 150 gold you spent on the arena run and then have a chance at getting a little gold on top of that. 9 wins is where you get the chance to really start making some gold as you get two chances to get random rewards that include 20-120 g. 11 wins is where you are finally guaranteed to make some gold as you get ~200 gold + the random chances for even more gold.
Remember that by definition the global average for win rate in the arena has to be 50% (ignoring ties). For every win anyone gets someone else is getting a loss. going 6-3 or 7-3 is 66-70% win rate and that is just starting to break even/make a little money on top of what you'd get just by completing your daily quests.
Arena is harder than it used to be, even more so for new players. You could easily end up losing money on arena, but if you limit yourself to one run a day and do your dailies you should see your money in the bank going up eventually, along with your collection. The experience is worth the investment imo.
I find Arena the most enjoyable way to play HS so, even though I'm not good enough to make lots of gold from it (yet), I'd still pick it over constructed, even if the gold returns were better.
I enjoy the randomness of the decks and, while it can be frustrating when you end up drafting a load of old toot, it's a good challenge to try to get as far as you can with the (sometimes terrible) tools that you're given. I may never make enough money from arena to buy hundreds of packs or pay for the solo adventures, but I'd rather enjoy my limited playing time and spend some real money on expansions and so forth than grind away on the ladder or in casual.

i have almost the entire collection, naxx and brm completely ftp, by arena gold, so yes when you get good it's the way to go.

Or, you know, take on the innkeeper.
