We (MLG) are looking to start running paid entry online tournaments very soon. If the demand is there, we may start to run one every day. Before we get going, I'd love to hear some feedback from the community around the current plan.
There will be a free entry ManaGrind tournament every weekend for both NA and EU. The top 2 finishers will win credits.
Paid entry tournaments will be 10 credits to enter ($7.50).
The prize will be 50% of entry fees plus credits. For example, if there are 16 players, the prize will be $60 cash + credits. If there are 32 players, the prize will be $120 cash + credits.
Formats will vary. Some ideas we may try are...
No restrictions
No legendaries allowed
Basic/Common cards only
Creatures only
Let us know what other ideas might be fun!
Is this something that you would participate in? Are there any changes you would like to see us make?
I like the idea of paid entry tournaments but I personally will not partake unless there is a standard format decided upon, if the format were "only creatures" or "no legendaries" I would not join. Those sound like "fun" casual formats; doesn't seem to follow the logic of paid entry...
We will definitely be supporting a standard format on a normal basis.
However, something we have learned with other games we support, themed tournaments typically do very well. For example, Snipers Only in Call of Duty. We'd like to replicate this for Hearthstone if the community is into it. If not, we'll stick to standard.
These themed tournaments will definitely take skill. It will force you to build special decks around the given rules and compete against others that have had the same restrictions.
Sounds good, maybe run a test once you registration clunkyness is fixed to see the interest, the open one has quite the interest so would think one with prizes will too, unless they except prize tournaments to be free entry too xD
I'm not a fan of cash based tournaments which aren't implemented into the client itself, but of paid tournaments in general, especially with varying formats.

I would definitely take part in standard tournaments as well as the themed tournament modes. The themed tournaments especially seem like they would result in some interesting matches.
I don't think it sounds logical to run a "pauper" tournament (decks with only common cards) with an entry fee, but that's just me.
Overall, I like the idea of paid entry tournaments. But could it be a little less than $7,50? After currency changing, it's quite a hefty amount for players like me, who'd love to participate. :(
I see that. It would appear that they are still requesting $7.50 entrance fee as well as taking a 50% cut. Contrary to almost every feedback response in this thread.
I would much prefer they don't tease the community by asking for feedback, if they have no desire to take it in to account.
Well played MLG, you just screwed yourselves incase anyone, LITERALLY ANYONE decides to start running tournaments on their website for a 10% fee, you lose your community.
I think the question is, is it even their community to begin with?
We're going to increase the prize pool to 75%. This will be updated later today. The other 25% goes to covering the cost of our admins and live support we have during the tournaments.
In regards to the entry fee, we sell credits in 10, 25, 50, and 100 denominations. If we were to do 5 credits, people would be forced to buy 10 credits and have 5 credits sitting in their accounts. Also, lowering the entry fee will lower the prize pool. We're going to continue our test with $7.50 entry.

Just curious. What is the issue with people having credits "sitting in their account" ? If it was 5 credit entry, people would get two chances to enter a tournament at their choosing. As opposed to blowing $7.50 on one single elimination tournament that could be over in 5 minutes.
The tournament will actually be double elimination.
Having extra credits is OK if you plan to play in multiple tournaments. However, if you only want to play in 1, it's a bad user experience. We can test out some 5 credit tournaments and see how they do.

Only 50% of the pool being paid out is unrealistic when all you're providing is a simple website to track who won.
I'm not saying they can't do it but if people start playing in those someone will come along and make a better website and do it for cheaper.

1 deck 8 card side board best of 3 with a losers bracket.

I do agree that $7.50 sounds like quite a hefty entrance fee. Something a little more reasonable, like perhaps $4-5 range would be much better.
Seems they are running a trial http://gamebattles.majorleaguegaming.com/pc/hearthstone-heroes-of-warcraft/tournament/eu-hearthstone-extravaganza/info with the 50% cut. Let's see if it gets any traction, I'll probably sign up later, I do think they should drop 10-20%(still 50% to the winner) onto the 2nd place as well along with credits tho.
