I am trying to go for legend but it get's really frustrating trying to play mage when there is so many things that counter every single deck. I have basically all every mage card so it's not about cards at this point i have spent a long time building my mage collection.
Freeze Mage - Get's straight countered by Reno Decks and pretty much any deck with Kezan Mystic. Not to mention a single bad draw like not drawing mad scientist no matter how hard you muligan him or extremely fast decks like face shaman.
Tempo Mage - Seems pretty solid at first until you fight a Control Warrior or you fight a get out tempoed by paladins secret deck or you just draw a bad hand.
Mech Mage - This deck use to be really strong but sadly it runs out of tempo and decks with good wave clear just out last it.
Reno Freeze Mage - Extremely situational extremely draw dependent it can be very strong but it weaker that typical freeze man but stronger situationally.
Echo Mage - Lets be honest here every single mage secret can be played around duplicate get's hexed , polymorphed the list goes on Mirror Entity you get some sad 1 drop with low value and health. Almost every class has a anwser. Counter Spell get's coined.
Giants - I like Giants but again now a days it's way to slow and not drawing secrets is a problem and it relies heavy on taunts and everyone is running silences which also counters mad scientist.
I just don't know how someone can purely play mage and still achieve legend consistently. Versus say a secret paladin deck or a control warrior or a Combo druid.
I'd go for freeze mage. Renolock is a bit annoying but it shouldn't be that big of a deal if you play the match up correctly: SMOrc. Ping face a lot, push damage with early minions (almost never trade... unless the minion is very threatening, brann for example), and do not waste any damage removing minions. You have to put him in range of lethal so that he has to use Reno, and then and only then you Alex him and go for the kill, keeping in mind that he probably has one healbot and jaraxxus (which shouldn't be a problem for freeze mage).
Many people might not agree, but I actually think that Renolock is favored for freeze, just a little bit tricky to play.
This season I haven't played much due to the lack of time, but last season I got legend pretty easily with freeze, and I don't think the meta has changed that much since then... maybe you will see more midrange druid. If there were many druids in the way it could be difficult to keep that possitive winrate with freeze, but give it a try, it's a very strong deck right now.
Freeze Mage is a tier 1 deck right now. When I play Mage I play that, but I've never subscribed to the idea of having a "main" class in Hearthstone. It's not WoW after all.
slowly playing my freeze mage it just seems like i can never make it to legend playing it despite my high win rate because each match takes a very long time.
I am playing a tempo mage that I really like and I haven't lost to Control Warrior yet and am 1-1 against secret pally. I have been running Toshley and Rhonin to help against control. It is stacked with one mana spells and ability to get one mana spells, so you can play a bit of control with it until you drop Archmage Antonidas and load up with Fireballs. I am really enjoying it.
Try out other classes. Playing all the other classes will make you stronger overall as you will better understand the decisions they have to make. Just playing Mage will make it harder for you to predict what the other player will do as well as you not being able to fully appreciate what kind of plays you make that cause the opponent maximum discomfort.
Freeze and Tempo mage are in a pretty good spot right now. Stop giving excuses, every decks have their counter decks, every decks sucks when you get bad draws/mulligan.. it's not only mage and definitely not only you(warrior sucks when they don't draw weapons on early game, reno gets rekt by aggro decks when they don't draw reno early and so on). Just focus on your mistakes.. mages are fine and if you don't have the time to climb with freeze mage switch to tempo then.. faster games and still a good viable deck.

My highest rank was rank 3 but never legend

Try this, maybe?

One of my problems was not being able to play enough games to get legend solely playing because they would take so long for each win.

I'd say mage is a perfectly balanced class right now, sort of the example to follow for all others.

Keep playing mage, but forget about being competitive.
