With the addition of Reno Jackson and the greater incentive to play good but not 'the best' cards, I was wondering how the community feels about playing these cards outside of Reno decks.
I myself have preferred to avoid the most powerful cards in favour of solid cards that fill a similar role but don't see play in the meta, since I feel more like I earn each win that way. For example, I'd much rather use my Onyxia than craft Boom. In fact I'd rather use Gruul than the good doctor, and similarly for all widely used neutral cards.
It would be nice to hear other people's thoughts, even if they're the exact opposite.
I play with what I feel are the best cards for the deck I;m building. Regardless of anything else really. I certainly wouldn't make a card choice based on what is or isn't being played.
I find Highlander decks to be fun to play as the card variety is interesting to me. That said, I would not play "worse" cards in a non-Highlander deck just to feed my ego or give me some sort of sense of accomplishment. Boom is fun. Screw Onyxia. lol :)
I dislike the idea of using or not using a card based on popularity. What I use has nothing to do with what other people do. That includes whether I play secret paladin or some handmade frankenstein.
Instead, I view cards based on what they actually do and how they can help towards the deck I'm designing. When I look at Dr. Boom, I don't autoinclude him in all of my decks. It's not some stand against the card or some such. If he's not in the deck it's because I honestly believe he doesn't fit there compared to other cards. For example, I honestly believe that Troggzor fits in a dragon priest deck better than Dr. boom since you tend to have either AoE already or cards that can chew through small fries anyway. You also tend to not have a single 7+ attack card and adding one, including Boom, means making their BGH useful, which is a bad thing. Any time you can make an opponent's cards near worthless is a good time. Also it tends to be spells that push your dragons off the board and Troggzor does well to ruin that notion.
Thus how I feel about 'usable vs used cards'. Very few cards are downright BAD. The question is whether they work well for YOUR particular deck that other cards can't do better. If your deck acn make good use of a sticky 4 drop then add in shredder. If not then don't add him, even if he is 'good'. Cards that are 'good' but 'unused' are cards that don't fit your deck/meta, nothing more.
Note: When you can think up a deck that can honestly make good use of Onyxia, and more than just a "becaue I don't want to use this other card" decision, bravo. :P
