I'm really impressed by Unreal Engine 5 potential, just as many people out there, especially game developers. It looks like an amazing tool for us and a huge step in the right direction. Why? Well, just take a look at this:
"I was able to load a 10 million polygon photoscan of Ziggy in the Unreal Engine 5. Using UE5's Nanite meshes I was able to load 1000 instances of it at 60fps before I got bored. That's 10 billion polygons and it didn't even blink. It could have handled a lot more than this."
Amazing, isn't it? :)
Here are also two short demos showing some of this new engine great potential:
And finally, a summary of the new core technologies it uses:
"Nanite virtualized micropolygon geometry frees artists to create as much geometric detail as the eye can see. Nanite virtualized geometry means that film-quality source art comprising hundreds of millions or billions of polygons can be imported directly into Unreal Engine—anything from ZBrush sculpts to photogrammetry scans to CAD data—and it just works. Nanite geometry is streamed and scaled in real time so there are no more polygon count budgets, polygon memory budgets, or draw count budgets; there is no need to bake details to normal maps or manually author LODs; and there is no loss in quality.
Lumen is a fully dynamic global illumination solution that immediately reacts to scene and light changes. The system renders diffuse interreflection with infinite bounces and indirect specular reflections in huge, detailed environments, at scales ranging from kilometers to millimeters. Artists and designers can create more dynamic scenes using Lumen, for example, changing the sun angle for time of day, turning on a flashlight, or blowing a hole in the ceiling, and indirect lighting will adapt accordingly. Lumen erases the need to wait for lightmap bakes to finish and to author light map UVs—a huge time savings when an artist can move a light inside the Unreal Editor and lighting looks the same as when the game is run on console."
I'm super excited and can't wait to put my hands on it. Seems like developing games with very high quality graphics is going to be easier than ever! :)
So people, what do you think about this new version of Unreal? Are you excited like me or not?
He talks about the VR World in the Book „Ready Player One i guess. Which in short „zombifies“ humanity because life on overpopulated earth sucks in the future and they look for comfort in a VR World.
But to be on topic: Yes the Unreal Engine 5 looks mindblowing. I‘m curious to see the first games that use it.

Oh, yeah, I had something similar in mind when reading his post. Thanks for the clarification! :)
It's good tech is moving forward. When we are putting people on a base on Mars, they need lifelike VR for their mental health, since there is no real nature up there.

Care to elaborate, please? I understand what you mean, but is that really necessary? :P
Anything that brings us closer to a completely virtual world like Oasis should be strived for! I'm ready for a digital world where I can totally be rid of this sadness filled, meat bag of a body.
On another point, I am surprised to find that my 10 year old PC is still able to run some of the latest games without having to crank the settings all the way down. Of course, if I had a better graphics cards it could probably look a lot better...
But this? I think I'll probably need to upgrade :)
Do epic have any playable tech demos or new games using the new engine I can try out? I know fortnite is getting ported over to the new engine but that game is pretty low fidelity compared to what we see in the videos. Overall it's very impressive but from what I've seen most actual games take years to reach the polish that they put into tech demos. That being said this really is a step up from what I've ever seen, the only thing that comes close is Red Dead 2, which at least graphically speaking was a world class masterpiece.

Damn, dude. "Sadness filled, meat bag of a body"? I don't know what is going on in your life, but I hope things get much better.
I'm hoping for a big leap forward in physics as well. I feel like we havn't seen any real terms physics improvements (atleast in AAA games) since GTA 4. Improved physics = improved gameplay. Eye candy only goes so far for me.
Saying that, just been playing FF7 Remake : Intergrade and holy shit, that game in 4K. It looks so damn good, and the game itself is pretty rad. Tifa looks boner inducingly good too, so you should consider trying it if you haven't yet dude. The original Remake is great too, no need to pay out for Intergrade if you don't want to.

Everything that brings humanity closer to the Oasis should be fought against with everything we've got.
Take a walk on the wild side...
"Closer to the Oasis"? Forgive me for my ignorance, but what do you mean? Are you talking about some kind of utopia or distopia?

Yeah, Valley of the Ancient.
I'm finally installing the Early Access version, can't wait to check most of its new content! :)
