I can’t figure out what to do in order to win against mage. I need about 40 wins to get golden warlock so I am playing cubelock in standard currently at rank 8. Every time I’m about to rank up, I get matched with a mage and get annihilated. I dread playing against them more than anything else. I run the tempostorm version of cubelock, no substitutions. I have most all of the cards so I’m open to any suggestions. Though it seems when I substitute stuff I always regret not having the original card that was in the deck. Thanks.
Dont tap and always clear board? You are also probably saving your combo pieces, you have to use them for tempo aswell just to keep the board clear, or cube your mixtures, you cannot take any minion damage ever. But yeah its pretty hard.
If they're able to build an early board behind a counterspell, it's rough. Plated beetles, mistresses, cubes, and lackeys are all good for proccing runes. Infuriatingly, I hardly ever go 2nd against a mage so I rarely get coin to pop a counterspell, but always save it if you do. Coil is another good cs proc, otherwise you have to plan and consider the board state and your next turns to decide whether tossing a defile, hellfire, spellstone or pact is least bad if you have an option. Contra a post above I feel like you need to tap pretty fearlessly at times, especially early, as getting a lackey or skull+demon by turn 5 or 6 is often key (though clearing on those turns is sometimes necessary). Also getting bloodreaver as early as possible to start sucking and mitigating their burn is very important. Obviously you have to know when not to tap, but most of the time you need to risk getting low to find the pieces to stabilize

Thank you very much for your input in the name of humanity, I'm sure you feel better now.
Now to the OP, Mage is the worst matchup and you will lose more than you win. As the best decks are pretty much in a rock-paper-scissors state, you need to accept you can't win all your games. I used cubelock to reach rank 5 and I've lost a lot of games against Mage but since the matchup against most other decks is in your favour, just keep trying and you will eventually reach your goal. You can try putting in a Doomsayer, I find that the best way to prevent the early swarm you won't be able to deal with later. The tips above are great, but in all honesty, your chances of winning without drawing the weapon and Gul'dan are pretty low, no matter how good you play. Good luck and hope you'll succeed!
Today got one star from 5 then dropped all the way back down to 9 playing with this deck.... seems very hit and miss to me. Thankfully I only need 18 more wins for golden warlock. I think I can swing that this season with my awful results.

I despise both Cubelock and Secret Tempo Mage. There for i have an advice for you. My experience is with Controlock and i can assure i rarely lose to any kind of mage this days. Only way to lose is if they use Skulking geist to destroy ur pacts. So u need to switch off ur cubelock or at least use them but drop the weapon and the doomguards. Go full control and if u have the darkness even bettet as their Aluneth will likely pull the candles. Of course use darkness only aftet they bust out aluneth. Plated beetle counters runes as u wont lose health. No need to run Rin cause they will most likely draw their whole deck before u bring Azari. Doomsayers would be awesome even if u use a pure Cubelock deck.
NEVER TAP. Like ever. If u go second then perfect save that coin for Counterspell. Use Deck tracker that reads what kind of secrets are available when they played them as it will narrow it down with each play u make that doesn't triggers a secret. Play Eater of Secrets just to upset them if u want but i dont think its needed tbf
If u opt to play controlock then u can run Elise The Trailblazer just to out value othet control decks. Then maybe u will fall in love for controlock and drop the cancerous Cube version.

I guess I will try that. It’s super hard to deal with them. I’d pretty much rather see any matchup than that.
CUbing Mistress seems to be Key in that match up, just switch to control mode, clear and tap wisely

and somehow I feel no sympathy for your struggle
Yeah as others have said. Tempo and life gain. Forget going for the combo just try to clear the board and prevent chip damage.
Watch for potion of polymorph turn 4/5. Then watch for the counterspell following that up to try prevent the healing spell.
The warlock legendary weapon is strong in this matchup because it lets you get minions to board without triggering a secret.

Got my 18 wins and haven’t looked back. Now messing with spiteful priest. 280 wins to go til golden. 50% win rate.... Definitely still a lot to learn.
