This is the freeze mage deck I played to #18 Legend over the course of six hours: vod here
I also finished the season at #12 Legend after playing nothing but this deck for the final week of the season.
Its performance against miracle rogue has been very strong, with ladder victims including Tides of Time and Massan.
With only two legendaries it's not the most expensive deck out there, and in my opinion it's the most viable mage in today's high-legend meta.
edit: 2x loothoarder out for 2x novice engi for better topdeck value later in the game

Thinking about losing Azure Drakes as the 4/4 body never sticks and often I don't have the manna to play them, possibly for Loot Hoarders.
Thoughts?
Depending on how you play the deck, it could be a good idea. When I started playing this deck I let my opponent's board develop often, and just focused on getting cards in hand and keeping my health up with Frost Nova/Blizzard. When I played that way, Azure Drake was pretty bad, and died without getting me much. But if you use your burn spells more liberally to keep the board clear, Azure Drake can trade well with the first thing they play on a cleared board, or it can add lots of damage on the big turn after Alex gets played.
tl;dr: I wouldn't cut it, I encourage you to care more about having a clear board and then drop drake at the right time to get the best value out of it.
The only change that I have made to this decklist is -1 Acolyte of Pain for +1 Loot Hoarder because I found it too hard to have the mana to make proper use of acolyte, and the Loot Hoarder lets you trade early to keep the board clear.
I am 45:24 (65%) with this deck from 15 to 7 on EU server last 2 days.
Games take about 11-17 minutes though.
Quick question - isn't 2x Ice Block a bit of overkill on that card? Perhaps swapping one of them out for either a Mana Wyrm, a Novice Engineer, a Fairie Dragon or a Loot Hoarder?
There are already 2 Novice Engineers, and I think having an extra turn to unload all of your damage dealing spells is incredibly important (Which is what Ice Block gives you). I think that Ice Block is one of the last cards that I would cut either of. I don't think that Faerie Dragon or Mana Wyrm are good in here. Either they trade early, which doesn't matter if you plan to cast Blizzard or Flamestrike, or you play them the turn after Alex and then they will probably die or be blocked by taunt guys.
Also, when you play Alex, you want to have an Ice Block up, and if you only have 1 Ice Block it can be hard to get both it and Alex in your hand at the same time.
Just my opinion. I think taking out 1 Ice Block is a bad idea, but if you really want to, include Loot Hoarder over anything else. Or maybe Sorcerer's Apprentice.
Ice Block is simply un-cuttable.
I posted my question while at work and hadn't had a chance to play the deck. Now that I've played it a bit, I quite agree with the 2nd Ice Block. Guess that's what I get for thinking without being able to test.
So far I'm 4 and 4 with this deck. I've been playing an aggro deck for a while now, and trying to wrap my head around a control deck is taking a little adjustment. But it's definitely an enjoyable deck.
Ice Block is your lifeline, often the difference between a win or a loss, there is no reason to cut one of your lifelines just for the helluva it.
I just love this deck, it is amazingly strong in the current meta and destroys both aggro and control. I think I just rushed to rank 10 with only a couple of losses caused by a really unlucky draw.
I have couple of notes:
This deck really only exists around getting Alexstrasza before turn 9 and stalling the game while you are trying to draw her. If your opponent is not armored up and you have a decent amount of HP with Ice Block it is almost a guaranteed win.
I did make a couple of changes, I wanted to handle card draw myself because I've lost a couple of games due to rogues making me overdraw with my Acolyte of Pain combined with Coldlight Oracle (got Alexstrasza burned that way twice, gg). I subbed out both Acolyte of Pain for 2x Coldlight Oracle. I also replaced one Novice Engineer with a Cone of Cold because those freezes just stall the game even more. Then lastly I subbed out one Azure Drake for a second Pyroblast, because I play this deck by avoiding board presence on both sides and finishing only with spell damage.
Alexstrasza + next turn Bloodmage Thalnos + Frostblot + Ice Lance + Ice Lance and either Hero Power or a Fireball is the perfect finisher.
I am still considering whether I want to replace the last Novice Engineer with a second Flamestrike (I hardly seem to draw into it).
I don't think Alexstrasza can be replaced in this deck, I have found that if I do not draw her it is really hard to win. You could craft her, its a really good card in the current meta (either offensively or defensively). Or there are plenty of other Mage decks which do not evolve so much around Alexstrasza.
This is definitely my favorite deck, and the best that I have played with so far.
It takes a little while to get used to playing it, but once you do it's killer. I'm rank 10 and win 80% of my games, it seems really strong against the meta at this level.
Aggro paladin, zoo, and handlock are all easy to beat. Aggro hunter is the most annoying in my opinion, but I haven't been seeing too many of those. Control warrior is obviously an awful matchup, and one that I have yet to win, but control warriors also seems to be unpopular at the moment. Unfortunately I haven't yet played the mirror match, which seems like it would be a lot of fun.
A couple notes on cards:
Try subbing kobold geomancer instead of the loot hoarder. You'll find you win more games with the spellpower, and I definitely don't use thalnos that often just for his card draw.
Definitely competitive. Can be a bit tiring waiting for your win condition.
Remember to account for healing when calculating lethal for your next turn (e.g. Handlock will normally heal for 3 with syphon soul when you have pyroblast).
In fact a rogue just double shadowed stepped an Earthen Ring Farseer to get + 9 hp.
I've been playing this deck a little & decided to make a video with it to add to my series on YouTube. I've had some fun with this deck!
Just had a full 30 card game versus a Priest with this deck. Card 30 out of 30 drawn, a Pyroblast to a Priest with 9 hp. Sweet baby jesus I've never felt so happy getting a card. He even MC'd my Alexstraza from me for 4 turns and I managed to freeze lock her the entire time.
I'm 6-1 with this deck thus far. The one loss was due to me being horribly greedy. This deck fits my play style 100%. It's very fun.
Yeah I agree with Pyro blast not being that useful. Thalnos, fireball, frostbolt, and 2 ice lances does 21 damage at 10 mana. I suggest putting in a spellbender to help protect your doomsayers/Alex.
Spellbender would not work for that, as you couldn't play it the same turn as doomsayer/alex... Still considering adding a finisher plan B (Antonidas or giants... gotta try those)

Is Pyroblast really necessary? It`s usually a dead card for me because I suppose we should never start burning before Alex right? With the exception of armor classes (ctrl warr > druid). So after Alex he's with 15 life and I should burn him next turn with frostbolt-ice lance-ice lance-fireball. OR is the Pyroblast there to save you with the help of Ice Block in case you dont have the OTK after Alex?
