Hey guys
I’m Marco,“Benfa” on hearthstone, from Italy. That’s my first post.
I really like deck building, a passion i got from magic the gathering. I was playing secret pally, but i noticed that i was losing a lot of games when drawing “useless” secrets, and i ended with only four of them.
I just hit legend today, not even playing for a few days, quite easily, with a very good win rate. I’m getting some interest so i start writing a guide.
Intro
There are very good post of secret pally, a lot of specific things has been said, so i’ll skip all of these, i don’t really know what to write, i’ll try to focus more on theory, making a different guide, i hope you enjoy.
I don’t really like guides because i don’t believe in absolute statements. I’m not 100% sure on anything, the statements in this guide are no exception, and i often change my mind, completely. Doubt of those who have too many certainties.
Quoting the 4 rules of Descartes’ method:
Rule 1
“Never to accept anything for true which I did not clearly know to be such; that is to say, carefully to avoid precipitancy and prejudice, and to comprise nothing more in my judgment than what was presented to my mind so clearly and distinctly as to exclude all grounds of doubt.”
Rule 2
“To divide each of the difficulties under examination into as many parts as possible, and as might be necessary for its adequate solution.”
Rule 3
“To conduct my thoughts in such order that, by commencing with objects the simplest and easiest to know, I might ascend by little and little, and, as it were, step by step, to the knowledge of the more complex; assigning in thought a certain order even to those objects which in their own nature do not stand in a relation of antecedence and sequence.”
Rule 4
“To make enumerations so complete, and reviews so general that I might be assured that nothing was omitted.”
My aim in this guide is helping you to think for yourself, and not to autopilot this specific decklist.
“Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
It could be that this 4 secrets version is simply a worst one of classic secret pally, i don’t know for sure, like i’ve already said, but i think that to be a good deck builder you don’t have to give anything for grant, no cards are exceptions, and remember to think outside the box.
Try every solution, test the cards yourself, if your aim is a deep understanding of the game. You have to discover why a card is bad one or a good one, don’t let others telling you. “An unexamined life is not worth living - Plato”.
General guidelines
This is a tempo deck, for “tempo deck” i mean a deck that’s neither aggro or control, but is aggro-control. It is trickier for card and games choices. For a tempo deck key factors are:
- making a constant pression, also on the mid game
- trying to have the initiative, but being able to counterfeit aggression
- staying on curve as much as possible, for not running out of cards too early
You’ll have to figure out when to attack and when to defend, often switching during the same game. It’s not that easy, the same for deciding to attack a minion or going face. Attack/defense and attacking face/minions are two big area that represents most of your decisions during a game, it’s not possible to give a specific guideline, luckily, because if it would be possible the game would be too easy, it’s where your ability and experience comes around, making you a better player than another.
It happens all the time that you can make different decisions, often i don’t know which is the best one for sure, you have to value pro and cons of every move, comparing your options, and putting all together deciding how to act, i don’t know other ways to procede.
Think, do not overthink. It seems a stupid thing to say, a lot of pro give the advice to use your rope to think, but different studies discovered that when facing a decision your inner experience and your instinct plays an important role, calculating in a really fast way a lot of factors, suggesting you the correct play, based on your previous excursus. When i don’t follow my inner voice and i “overthink”, changing my initial decision, more often than not, i end up with a worst one. I’m not saying to believe in the hearth of the cards (pokemon trademark), or not to think, don’t misunderstand me.
It ain’t over ’till it’s over. When you are in trouble it happens quite often that somehow you end up winning, so have faith and stay focused, you can make big comebacks or draw for lethal damages.
Aim for the sky. My aim is only one, being legend n.1, it’s not important if it’s not happening, and it should be the same for you. It doesn’t matter what’s your skill level, do not settle, if you want to be competitive, push it further and you’ll be surprised by yourself.
To be continued…
Legend proof:
This deck is amazing man. I wonder why it didnt get famous. By the way I think you should remove one of the -mysteieus challenger because most of the time youll have the secret on ur hand. Im not really sure what to replace it but truesilver is good switch.
Won every game I played from rank 8 to ALMOST 5 except for a mirrior match up. Thanks!
Loving this deck! A few changes, got rid of both argent squires and one aldor peacekeeper in exchange for two equality and a zombie chow. Feel the ZC is better for early game trades and equality helps this deck so much. My problem playing other versions of secret paladin was removal, and now i feel I can clear any board. Yesterday I played a dragon priest, he had two dragons and two deathlords on the board. Equality, consecration, gone.
how is it going with the changes that you did? i was considering to remove one Mysterious Challenger for Sylvanas Windrunner or Harrison Jones instead.
MC feels like a waste here, and TWO of them? what's the deal?
Even with just two secrets, MC is way OP! 6/6 for 6 is ok stats to begin with, combined with the fact that it auto sets your secret combo up it can still win a game easily. In fact I'm using a variation of this deck and MC totally just saved my ass against a face hunter. I was down to 4 health after his turn, he had glaivezooka and an empty board. He says "well played" before my turn like he has it wrapped up. I play MC, the noble defender kept me at 2 health, and I won next turn.
Even if both sets of secrets are gone a cost effective 6/6 in the late game is pretty helpful.
I applaud your take on "guides". Its more so the theory of how to pilot this deck (or any deck for that matter) as opposed to "do this if this happens, never do this, always do this". I'm happy with the secret deck I have now, but I feel like I've learned something from this guide. +1 from me!
Remove Divine and re add that Mysterious. You really need 2.
Tried this deck, good against aggro but gets destroyed against any control match up.
Only effective Paladin deck against Hunters! Double MC is great, iffy only on paper.
A replacement for Tirion Fordring since I don't have him yet and just starting out pally :( halp!
Tirion cannot really be effectively replaced; he's too strong of a card, and his effect is too powerful/unique. Your best bet is to use a "big body" card - Boulderfist Ogre is a solid card for decks that are just starting out.
If you really want to play Paladin, though, you're going to want to save up dust for Tirion "I spent all of my time as an ice-sickle in Icecrown Citadel But Still Claim I Killed the Lich King" Fordring.
Yes i'm still bitter over that. Overblown windbag of a freeze-pop.
I understand :( he's a huge threat and a pally essential. Thanks man!
Hate to sound like a broken record but Tirion has no replacement that fits his role properly. I would know because I don't have him either ;-;
Best I can think of is Sunwalker but cards like Tirion and Dr Boom have no replacement
wow, this is such a great angle to Paladin.
So let me get this straight, you play with fewer secrets than secret Paladin? gj!
Cool, i also play Paladin with only Avenge and Noble Sac, it's way more consistent, but i use only one Mysteriosu Challenger. Your deck seems alright though.
This seems like an obvious change, since 2xMysterious Challenger is way more than needed for 4 secrets and Quartermaster is auto include in midrange pally.
It definitely feels more consistent than normal secret pally, and I changed it up a couple times and was on a win streak and happy for a while, then I hit a hunter streak which I lost every single time.. sometimes because no belchers or consecrate, even lost a game because I cleared everything he had and he was out of cards and he topdecked quickshot into quickshot into kc :/ went on tilt after that one and lost all the stars I had earned.
The only loss I actually had with the deck before tilting was when I was swinging for lethal, I accidently misclicked my weapon on his 10/9 mysterious challenger, instead of his 2 hp hero.. and i died cuz i was only at 8 lol
It's the same with every deck, its hard to win when your opponent (stuff like face hunters/aggro druid) draw absolute perfectly and you don't, it's inevitable. I definitely feel better playing 4 secrets over the 9 secrets
I think is better to have one less Argent Squire, and have a Divine Favor just only for get more card draw
