Spent the season of June reaching Legend and optimizing a Dragon Mage control deck. This deck has gotten me through rank 5-1 with relative ease and has kept me easily in the top 500 of the Legend rankings. It's an incredibly solid control deck that dominates other control decks such as Paladin and Warrior. It furthermore does an incredible job at outliving the combo decks from Oil Rogue and Patron Warrior. It fairs quite well against Tempo Mage, Zoo Warlock and does surprisingly well against any slower type of Hunter.
The deck features many heavy, big threats such as Ysera, Nefarian and Dr. Boom. The main feature however, is the plethora of sustain abilities due to the use of two Antique Healbots, Alexstrasza and an Ice Block. It does not use Fireballs, Polymorph functions as a better 4-cost removal spell in control matchups and there is no burst in this deck. Lastly, it uses two Flamestrikes due to their importance in matchups such as Zoo Warlock and Patron Warrior.

Video Guide Contains:
- Statistics/Win percentages from over 200+ games, global win percentage 65%.
- Match 01: Control Warrior
- Match 02: Zoo Warlock
- Match 03: Aggro Hunter

(All accessible with a 'navigation bar' at the bottom of the video)
In general the deck performs best against common decks in this order:
1. Priest/Control Paladin > 2. Control Warrior > 3. Patron Warrior > 4. Oil Rogue > 5. Tempo Mage/Mech Shaman > 6. Freeze Mage/Druid > 7. Warlock Zoo > 8. Hybrid Hunter > 9. Aggro Hunter > 10. Handlock > 11. Malygos Warlock > 12. Aggro Paladin
Two more matches (Zoo Warlock and Patron Warrior):

Potential changes:
- Change 1x Sludge Belcher for Harrison Jones for an even better matchup against warriors (and other weapon users, of course).
General mulligan strategy:
Generally you're looking for Mad Scientists and Blackwing Technicians. Against aggro decks you want to mulligan for Zombie Chow. Against slower, more control decks you're looking for Scientist, Technician and Twilight Drakes. When you're up against a deck you know is likely to play threats early (e.g. tempo mage, zoo lock) you'll also want to mulligan for Frostbolt.
Great deck. The only change I made was switching nefarion for chromagus
I like the deck but had to change -1 belcher +1 Black Knight with the awful amount of taunt druids in the meta, the knight saved me couple of times
I've been rocking this deck and I'm completely in love with the control style with one of my favorite classes. I'm tired of the tempo game and and next best thing with control is freeze mage and it's just not fun enough to climb with especially with the aggro meta. This deck acctually contests the aggro decks quite well if played correctly, and for the worse match up for the deck being aggro pally, you don't see enough to completely shut down trying out the deck. I have a question though, what do you want to look for/mulligan against aggro locks? Any tips against them? Seems to be my only match up I get stomped no matter how good my curve or removal is. Some help would be greatly appreciated! Completely in love with this deck and might try taking it all the way to legend this season! Thanks!
My "version" of this deck can be found here: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/270864-modified-dragon-mage
It is cheaper and try to solve some problems against weapon heavy decks.
nice
The numbers in this deck look great (from an aesthetic point of view), congratulations on hitting Legend with the deck, and you did a great job with the video to help other players see your stats and game play. I do feel like this deck could catch people by surprise, for sure, but overall this seems less consistent than Freeze Mage and Freeze I would imagine having an easy time against this deck if the player knew what was going on (Sand-Bagging their Archmage til they can get at least 2-3 extra Fireballs).
With only 2x Flamestrikes as your AOE damage, wouldn't any consistent aggro deck give this deck troubles? However I can understand why you have a decent Control matchup since your deck runs a bunch of fatty Dragons.
Hopefully you can get Top 100 this month to prove my skepticism wrong since that would be slightly more impressive! Anyways, you have created some great content in general and I hope you may consider building other guides similar to this since you seem to have a real knack for it.
Good luck and grind on,
-Wings
I think its just my lack of luck, but i find myself in 80% of games without Dragons for Blackwing Technician and Blackwing Corruptor. I think i should start droping everything for dragons lol.
Ice Block is useful in any Mage deck that tries to be controlish. In my opnion its very important on these kind of decks.
Ice block is crucial.
dont have ysera so i tried Deathwing and to everyone's surpries it worked !! .. i also removed 1 Flamestrike since Deathwing serves as a board clear and put in sylvanas.. by the time i play deathwing i usually discard 2 cards or so and destroy oppenents' whole board without triggering damage effects like Imp Gang Boss and Acolyte of Pain
also the amount of wellplays i recieve after pulling off some insane Deathwing comeback is outstanding :D
thanks for the deck
A deck like this should earn you the noble peace prize! Fun and effective deck in this current annoying meta.
I swapped Zombie Chow for Mirror Entity and the Nefarian(which i aways thought was a dead card) for one Water Elemental. It is being pretty good for me in rank 13. 5-1 so far.
Ok, so I love this deck. But as I mentioned previously it's not consistent enough for meta. Reason being is there is not enough early cards. I feel that I'm always struggling til turn 4-5. I took someone else's advice and removed one sludge / zombie for 2+ mana wyrms. This has helped the issue a bit.
Also I don't think you need 4 heavy hitters in the deck. There has never been a match where I needed Ysera, Nefarian, Alex, and Boom. Sure great against control decks but you awkwardly have to hold onto the dragons the entire game hoping to benefit from the synergy. In my experience they'll have wasted all of their removal spells on the twilight's, Emperor, and either Ysera or Nefarian. And in the end, you still have one they don't have an answer to. Another body on top of that just seems overkill.
I 'think' its a good idea to remove Boom and put in a 1-2 cost minion. Could be off base but to me that's what would make this deck shine. I really think Nefarian is the issue here but damnit it's a dragon deck and we're going to make room for him!
Cheers!
Yeah I've thought about dropping Nefarian quite a bit, because on average he is nowhere near as good as other dragons like ysera/alex or other big legendaries like Rag. But he is a dragon and I think 7 total dragons is a good number, 6 just doesn't seem like enough and sometimes the spells are actually good.
Too inconsistent for me
I've pretty much wrecked every mage I've fought until almost the very last card and I can't help but cringe on behalf of them a little bit. Pretty fun deck!
What do you think of Rend Blackhand in this deck? Tried one for one polymorph, pretty nice
And: what about shieldmaster for slugde? Missing a fourdrop i feel
Deck is fun!
Removed Ice block, added a second Ice Barrier. Removed Alex and added a Pyroblast. Been working well ever since.
At what rank, 20? pyroblast sucks without alex, alex is a dragon and ice block ice a lot better at stalling than barrier.
