This is a more midrange version of my previous full aggro cancer mage deck found here: http://www.hearthpwn.com/decks/247726-cheap-tempo-aggro-cancer-25-5-rank-95-winrate
After using my aggro cancer deck to climb from 20-6 in no time, I hit the wall that is rank 5. And so began a battle with RNGesus which ended with more salt and close calls than I can remember. After my failure to pass rank 3 multiple times, I changed my tune to oil rogue for a bit, but came back to the tempo mage idea after long games and close calls became annoying.
This mage deck focuses on early game Flamewaker / Mana Wyrm / low cost spell tempo power followed by a Fireball / Frostbolt / Archmage Antonidas / Dr. Boom finisher. The Azure Drakes and Arcane Intellects should keep you afloat in terms of card draw, and you should be able to crush many meta matchups in no time.
In terms of mulligan, generally keep Mad Scientist, Mana Wyrm, and efficient earlygame removal depending on the matchup, such as a Flamecannon / Frostbolt for Shade of Naxxramas / Imp Gang Boss, Knife Juggler, or Animal Companion.
If you don't have antonidas, he can be replaced with Rag perfectly. If you own neither, you'd have to go with something like pyroblast which is really clunky in comparison, but can still provide killing power. Keep in mind nobody really uses pyro for anything these days so I'm not sure how it will affect results.
So far I have had great results, and will make legend by tomorrow at this rate. Don't hesitate to rate the deck so I will feel inclined to add / update it and answer any questions.
Good luck in the ladder!
5/23/2015 Edit: -1 Piloted Shredder -1 Azure Drake +1 Mechanical Yeti +1 Emperor Thaurissan . A few comments suggested these changes and after ~25 games of testing the changes seem to create more winning opportunities. The extra spare part works well with Antonidas and the 1 or more cost reduction on low cost spells from Thaurissan can create ridiculous synergy with Antonidas / Flamewaker.
5/27/2015 Edit: Finally made legend.
Change: -1 Mechanical Yeti +1 Kezan Mystic , just filling the tech slot with something more successful, helping me pull off an awesome set of wins to get me to legend at last! Good luck to anyone else attempting the final push! My final push stats from ~rank 4 to legend are found below.
5/29/2015 Edit: Have been climbing legend well
I had piloted shredder and switched it out, it's honestly the most open card slot in the deck. I often swap it out with other cards depending on how my matchups are going on that given day. Kezan is one choice I often make because of freezing traps / mage secrets. Mech yeti has more value than you might think because of that spare part. I have won games because of a well-timed spare part + antonidas (gotta love stealthed antonidas haha).
Yes, i must admit that spare part is really uselful sometimes, but at this point there are lots of hunters for me so i am going to use Kezan Mystic.
Did you become legend with this deck or are you still climbing the ladder?
Currently stuck at 1-2. The grind has been pretty brutal lol. Currently using Kezan as well.
Gratz on legend! I am stuck at rank 1 now :( Losing to warriors, hope i can make it to legend aswell !
Thanks and good luck! I managed to go 4-0 against warriors on my final push
Possible replacement for doctor bomb?
Correct, without antonidas thaurissan is not useful and shouldn't be used. Take a second azure.
This deck is seriously good
is it possible to beat zoo/demon zoo with this deck archetype?
I was on the verge of discarding mage forever. WAS. Now I've played both this deck and the aggro version and, personally, love this one. Keep going man ;)
Have you thought about trying Mechanical Yeti over Piloted Shredder?
Testing -1 Shredder -1 Azure +1 Yeti +1 Tarzan atm
Could I replace Archmage with Sylvanas until I get him?
Just faced a pally who focused on summoning recruits to fill the board, do you think this would justify arcane explosion? Also, just for flamewalker i tend to prefer yeti's and CW gnomes instead of scientist, not sure if anyone else agrees. More 1 cost parts, and flamewalker tends to draw aggro, so if you can selectively play duplicate when you know it's going to be taken down, your opponent almost always quits.
Arcane explosion generally isn't used much and a board of 1/1s should die to flamewaker/missiles in no time.
I use CW gnomes in a more aggro version of this deck linked at the top. Scientist is a ridiculously powerful tempo card (2/2 + 3 mana secred for 2 mana) which makes it pretty much irreplaceable. The idea of duplicate is meh when you have mirror image + flamewaker combo, too often it will get wasted on something. Not to mention a duplicate setup may require you to slow down the matchup. In addition, it warrants the removal of mad scientists so you don't pull a duplicate at a bad time.
So those are my thoughts on your thoughts, hope this helped.
Either way, I'm glad you're enjoying the deck, good luck!
The only reason i'm considering is for facing pally + muster for battle, which takes flamewalker out if i don't have the right things at that time. It's really only for one situation and when it happened it got pretty hairy with taunts and whatnot but i made it through, just had me considering the possibility of explosion being useful for scenarios such as that. Also, it should be known that since i have no Boom, i run Gazlowe instead, so together with spare parts from CW's and Yeti's the extra 1 cost can be beneficial to me. What do you think?
Good call, bro. Don't own Thaurissan yet, but that makes a lot of sense here.
After testing with this and also Mech Yeti instead of Shredder, I have changed the deck. Definitely a good trade off, although I'll be watching to see if I run out of steam and then draw Thaurissan, because I do feel like Azure drake is an insanely strong card due to topdeck situations.
If I don't have Archmage Antonidas, then should I still switch out Azure Drake for Emperor Thaurissan?
Nah. Switch archmage for rag/toshley/pyro, don't take thaurissan.
