Just killed a warrior on turn 6 from 33 health with nothing but a Necrium Blade on board
Edit: thanks for the upvotes. Here's a small description:
The deck's idea is to assemble the whole combo through a single Elven Minstrel. That happens 100% of the time when you do not play the Cavern Shinyfinder, however i have found that card to add consistency rather than lower it.
The way you actually win is by having a 1 charge Necrium Blade equipped, then playing Kobold Illusionist -> attack > Backstab (or Razorpetal) the Illusionist and then burn the opponent. That's 4 mana for 2 copies of Malygos. Shadowsteps only help prepare a 2 mana Illusionist, leading to an even cheaper setup, that can allow us to burn even a high armor opponent. They are however not highly important and are probably the first cards to replace.
Cards like Bloodmage Thalnos, Vilespine Slayer or some taunts would help keep us alive, but would lead to us needing more time and more draw. Personally, i have not found that version of the deck as interesting or effective.
Edit #2: i've replaced the two Shadowsteps for one Sudden Betrayal and one Necrium Vial, as a test. The first is aimed at helping against aggro and the second against high armor decks (and slow draws).
As for Mulligan choices: Always keep one Elven Minstrel, as he gets us the full combo. Mulligan aggressively for him.
If you are certain the opponent is playing aggro, you can keep effective removal like Backstab or Sap. If you are certain they are slow, keep Preparation and Razorpetal Volley, as they speed things up for you.
Update #3:
I replaced the Shinyfinder with a second Sudden Betrayal, partially because the secret was performing well, partially because of a rage moment on a shinyfinder topdeck on the wrong turn.
I am personally getting close to a 50% winrate against zoo, which should be a very bad matchup. Don't play like a typical control deck. When the pressure is not too high, try to ignore it and setup your combo. You have to win first, not outlast them.
Thank everyone for the enormous feedback. This is something i never expected. I hope you keep having fun!
Final Edit:
I do not have the time to refine this deck as much as I would like. However as many of you have found, tuning it is not too hard, because there are a few simple guidelines to follow.
1. You should be very careful about adding more minions. Every one reduces the effectiveness of Elven Minstrel by a lot, and that card is the soul of the deck.
2. Mulligan almost everything for Elven Minstrel and go for the combo as soon as possible. If your opponent doesn't have lethal on board and you can set up the OtK, go for it. Don't play this as control because the rogue class does not have the tools for that.
3. Don't give up if your opponent is gaining a lot of armour. If you find the right spells you can burn through obscene amounts of it, as demonstrated in the videos.
And an important clarification. The deck has a somewhat weird approach to it. Contrary to what most players are used to, the aim is not to have a fair chance to win every game. Instead the deck aims at being extremely favoured when drawing properly, while accepting that there will be a few games you just concede. It is in a sense a coinflip deck, except the odds depend on the metagame, rather than always being 50-50.
Updated for Rastakhan: 2 Walk the Planks and one Cavern Shinyfinder in the place of two secrets and an Assassinate.
The deck is now much smoother and can actually be used for ranking up consistently.
Here's a video of the deck by Kiwiinbacon.
And here is the second video!
I can never find a reason to use razorpetals. I've often has to struggle to get them out of my hand. I think I'll play around with replacing one with thalnos.
You have to play out your cards you won't need in the matchup to clear out your hand. After I learned to do this, I haven't had any troubles with the Razorpetal Volley.
I don't think you want to play any additional minions. The way the deck is right now, the Elven Minstrel always draws your two combo pieces (or the other Minstrel). If you add Bloodmage Thalnos you could draw it and one combo piece, which sucks cause then you have to draw the other combo piece naturally or draw another Minstrel. Bloodmage Thalnos also wouldn't help you much in terms of spell damage I think, unless you already pushed some damage, which is hard cause you need to trade with the few minions you have in order to survive.
Dude razorpetal is your win con
Much as I love Valeera, every game I've played so far, I have either won or lost (usually won!) long before turn 9!
Your plan worked well.
I'm enjoying this deck so far. I'm not climbing ranks with it yet, but so far starting at R15 (lost quite a few experimenting with some very questionable decks) I am 3-0. It's definitely fun to fish for a few spells and one shot out of nowhere. With 10 mana, you don't even have to attack with the Necrium Blade, you can just play it and hero power to instantly proc its deathrattle, then continue the combo as normal.
Overall, very nice share and fun deck! +1 from me.
I can't decide.
People like you, are just trying to be a troll (bad one) or you really this stupid ?
I can't really understand why people find this deck fun or good.
This is one of the worst deck I've ever tried, you can literally only win if you have a god-tier mulligan.
What deck are you playing? I won like 8 games in a row with it. This is by far one of the strongest OTK decks I've ever played. There is enough removal (Vanish, Cheap Shot, Fan of Knives) to survive and you have enough card draw (Fan of Knives, Shiv, Minstrel) to get your win condition very fast. Also control decks that run a lot of removal don't have any targets and tend to overdraw, especially after you use Vanish. This deck is awesome.
The fact you won 8 games in a row (yeah, sure) just means that you're very lucky, not that this deck is strong.
If you start with a bad hand, you can already concede. In most of the matchups, if you can't draw all the cards that you need by turn 7 (and there's way more than just 2 cards to draw) you basically lost.
This is pure lucky-garbage deck.
Sure... luck. I had shitty starting hands (2 Eviscerates and Malygos) and just kept controlling the board, rotated through my deck and won at turn 12 or 13 instead of turn 7. Maybe just because you lost with the deck doesn't mean the deck is bad but just that you did not know how to play it? If I know one thing about luck then that it's not consistent. And I keep winning.
Yeah sometimes I lose against super Aggro decks but against Odd-Paladin I keep a Fan of Knives to get rid of the dudes and by turn 6 I have a Vanish so I can easily survive until turn 10. And by then I almost always have the combo. Nah man. You don't have to be lucky to win. You have to get pretty unlucky to lose.
horrible
Luck based deck. This is pure shit.
Lol, spot the scrub
This is definitely the most effective deck I have tried in the new expansion - a lot of fun too!!
Man, even when I'm sure I'm going to lose, the deck manages to pull me back from the brink! Had one game where I won with 2 health left and another where a top deck Necrium Vial saved me with Maly and Prep in hand but no Necrium Blade to bee seen anywhere!
Man this deck is just too fun, I love how my opponents highlight the illusionist every time and then just emote wow when they realize what's going on LOL. I realy don't think the secrets are good, you get stomped by aggro regardless of them and against slow decks they don't do much either, same with shinifinder, cutting it seems correct, I've been running a second Assasinate as it's decentremoval and very much unexpected and I think the last card should either be a second illusionist or a second vial for more consistency. Having said that I see what the problems might be as you could never get maly or get illusionist into illusionist and the vials are always dead so maybe some other card could work? The secrets feel bad no matter what so definitely cut them.
Maybe some removal like deadly poison
Best deck ever. You will never lose stars with it. Even on rank 20
I've faced this deck 3 times on ladder.
I just came here to thank you for the free 10 gold.
