You mean like, he's an 11/11 as soon as he gets to attack? So every time you OR the opponent press the end turn button he gets 2/2? WAY too big of a buff!
He should have 1 less attack so he can't get BGH'd right away and instead of making him gain +1/+1 at the end of your turn, make him grow from killing minions. Probably should make it +2/+2 to compensate. He'd be pretty scary then, like something out of a child's nightmare: The Boogeymonster if you will.
Wait a second...
Funny how everyone says bull about this one. I've got most of the op ones aside from ol Boom and this guy doesn't fall any shorter as he's won me just as many games as sylvanas, Antonidas and the other ''OP'' legendaries. Be it in big creature decks like ramp druid portal, fizzlebank so forth lock, shaman can get him out with calling, he works great with rogue stealth and still works great with any others. In general this thing is an 8/8 for 8 and if a silence is burned he's still 7/7 for 8 well worth the waste of an enemy silence, if the enemy lacks anything to remove him he can spiral out of control especially with buffs and manipulators. Try it first people, yer wastin a hella good end game card.
The thing is, if you are in a position where you would win the game by playing Gruul and it doesn't get hit by a Big Game Hunter, you'd have won more easily by playing a Dr. Boom one turn earlier.
Sylvanus is OP not because of her statline but because of the situation she creates on the board. You opponent has to trade everyting into her or at least play inefficiently in order to remove her without risking her stealing one of his bigger minions. So it's ridiculous to compare the two, they function entirely differently.
Second, if you have to use other cards to ensure value out of Gruul, he's already become not worth it. Using stealth on him just so that he can live a turn to get in a smack at your opponents face is relying too heavily on cards that you might not have drawn at that stage in the game. Also, after he hits face so what? He'll just get hit by Execute or Shadow Word: Death or Polymorph or Hex or Sap or just a BGH the next turn. All you did was waste 2 cards to get 8 face damage which could have been achieved by taking a much simpler route with more streamlined cards.
The problem with Gruul is that he's just too slow. He hits hard, he's an amazing beatstick, no-one is denying that his statline isn't good. The problem is that he's too easily dealt with and provides no immediate value. Archmage Antonidas can generate 1-3 Fireballs on the turn you play him and more on the following which can amount to game-winning damage. Even if he gets immediately removed you still have the damage he generated in hand. Same with Alexstrasza. Even if she is removed she at least set your opponent to 15 life (dealing a hypothetical 15 damage as battlecry) or healed you to 15 life (healing for a potential of 14 life). These are all immediate effects you can benefit from. Gruul is only a beatstick, one that is outclassed by the infamous Dr. Boom who is cheaper to play and has a better body. And even Boom has more lasting of a board effect after his removal, with his Boom Bots that can swing the board state with their deathrattles.
Typically, dropping 8 mana on a big minion that gets removed the following turn by your opponent for 1-3 mana, leaving them with a free turn to develop their board, is such a huge loss in tempo that it's impossible for you to reclaim the board state and you often end up losing the game. At least in the case of Boom, he's 1 mana cheaper and leaves behind his bots that can trade into the board and deal with the enemy minions. Gruul if he's dealt with sets you a whole turn behind your opponent. If he isn't dealth with, then Dr. Boom dropped a turn earlier would have achieved the same objective and dealt an extra 10 damage (14 damage + 4 damage over 2 turns as opposed to 8 damage over one)
TL;DR
He's not a bad card inherently, it's just that the design space of Hearthstone is controlled by the removal spells that too easily nullify any value Gruul can produce unless you opponent just doesn't have them. In which case, you can win more easily with different big legendaries that have less risks associated with them.
My 1st golden legendary I ever got...... meh :/
Yes! I just got the golden one! Now I'm gonna go disenchant him and craft ANOTHER gruul! :)
just opened my secon gruul, two weeks after the first one...
whats the chance? why not a useful legendary?
third gruul in a row here, in about a month's period, getting really tired of your shit rngesus
Just got the golden one im gonna disenchant him
Should I craft bloodmage thalnos, millhouse manastorm, or Hemet Nessingwary
Bloodmage Thalnos. Used in both Oil Rogue and Freeze Mage, very solid card. Millhouse Manastorm and Hemit Nesingwary are useless.
Calling Millhouse useless is an insult to useless cards.
Yeah, then go and craft Millhouse manastorm
:) value
I wouldn't disenchant any golden legendary, because you will probably never get that same legendary as golden ever again. On the other hand, this is quite bad
No! Go discant them and make a Bloodmage thalnos or Millhouse. Top tier decks need those cards!
Y doesnt anyone say Lorewalker Cho?
I don't think there's any way to rebalance this card to make it good. Actually, I guess if they made it fairly costed it would see play, like a 4 drop 4/5 or something, but I'm not sure what deck would play him.
I don't have him, but I've gotten him from unstable portals a lot. Although he may be vulnerable, he'll crush your opponent if they don't have an immediate response. Keep him alive for 2 turns and he's nearly impossible to kill from stats, and they have to watch their hero die wondering why nobody plays that card.
just had a 13/13 gruul vs a priest...strange (he had used his shadow words so)
I think that you guys are being to critical, as a card he's very easy to be taken out by bgh, and spells like polymorph, hex, etc... however he's gotten me through some very bad situations. Though I'm not a Hearthstone expert, but he's ideal for a beginner, not requiring much skill to use and an all around fun card to play. I will admit this this card is terrible for higher end players and ranked. But he's a great troll card, and if you know how to use him he can be very dangerous.
