Im learning chineese for 6 years and i can tell you that it is better to learn via the book first, then go to China and learn their pronunciation. After that only try to do sth yourself. And if you know, some characters may only be used in pair to understand their true meaning.
But if you really want- good luck to you then
Nice to see you are learning Chinese. How is your Chinese language level now? Hope good enough for free conversation?
Pronunciation (listening & speaking) first, and characters (reading & writing) second. Always valid for any second language learning if you wish to really master that language. Learning from book is good, but it could be a little bit difficult from the start, I assume, especially with the difficult hieroglyphic character systems like the Chinese text is. I am now running a language service company and as you can imagin, I'd got hands-on experience about language learnings. YouTube would be fine for learning too, if you make it right. :-)

Good luck, and make progress! Cheers.
