Best thing you can do as a f2p is learn to play arena and then start farming those arenas, you won't get much opening packs with the gold you get from quests. 

I improved a lot watching others play arena, especially the players who explain their moves. Once you get the basics you play a lot of arena and you learn the rest by yourself.

In any case you will need quite a lot of time before you put together a nice collection but meanwhile you can play standard with budget decks. If you master a decent budget deck I'm pretty confident that you can reach rank 10 and with grind and luck rank 5 (which is nice since you get a golden epic). But you shouldn't focus too much on ranked at the beginning unless you want to go full tryhard from the get go XD

I don't have time to play meme decks in ranked (only at the "floors") but as I reached legend yesterday I will switch to full Whizbang soon :D

 It's random. I also keep getting the aggro druid deck, which is fine because it is decent.

There are a few recipes that seem pretty terrible though: mech paladin, spell shaman, and burgle rogue have performed particularly badly for me so far.

 Yeah I think that the card is good and refreshing for newbies but also for veterans. I'm enjoying every game to the fullest :) 

Actually Mech Paladin and Burgle Rogue are not that bad. Even if, with the second deck, meeting another rogue sucks sometimes xD

Spell Shaman lacks a solid win condition, I think that finding Hagatha early is crucial to keep the pressure and constantly generating more value.

That would be a bit silly. After a couple of years it's still giving only wild card decks in standard and no cards from newest expansion, and they certainly wouldn't update an old card like this so it always uses cards from current standard pool of cards.

 I think they said that it will always offert you decks from the last two recipes available, so I think it will be "standard" forever.

Can anyone confirm this?

I agree with OP, I think they are improving the importance of the player's decision making abilities.

If they don't release stupid broken cards in the next expansion I think that next year's rotation will be the start of a pretty good meta.

 They would of been half the fun though. I think they missed something by not having a animation at the start or something to let them know you are playing him

 Yeah I expected an animation at the start of the game and I don't really mind letting the opponent know my deck. 

On the other hand if a player would like to rank a bit more seriously with Whizbang it would be a problem letting the opponent know your cards from the start of the game.

I think it's fine as it is, all I really enjoy in the end is playing the deck, not letting the enemy know my memes xD

 The thing is, if you have Hearthstone Deck Tracker, you can instantly see if your opponent is playing Whizbang, every card your opponent plays is marked with a "present" icon which usually shows which cards are from Discover effects etc.

 For real? Is this a thing? 

They should fix it, this is not supposed to happen.
