I've played this deck with this change to rank 12 and I find this adds consistency. Flame Imp also takes away too much health since this deck isn't aggro/rush but a tempo deck which often lasts until the end-game. At most, Flame Imp is a 1 for 1 trade that doesn't synergize with other cards.
Funnily enough I don't face taunts that much anymore. People play more control decks nowadays.
Most classes only have a single board clear, so just know what turn they can get enough mana to play it and expect it on that turn. So if it's getting close to that turn, save a little bit.
Playing Coldlight Seer first baits removal and puts another Murloc on the field. Since every Murloc that is already on the field and ready to attack before you drop Warleader is value, since you can get an immediate boost.
Plus, Warleader is so valuable that you don't want to lose it without getting value first.
He's not bad. He's still a great card when your opponent doesn't have anything to deal with him. But most decks have a spell to deal with minions which is held until a minion like Ragnaros is dropped.
I'll definitely keep those modifications in mind and test them out in the future. For the moment, I think the mana curve is where it needs to be. Adding any of those would skew it towards the high-side.
The Ice Lances are pretty important to do fatal, but also have great utility in freezing for protection.
Flamestrikes are pretty much essential in ranked these days. 2 of them just makes it more consistent. Plus they are very very rarely a dead draw.
Pretty amateur Hearthstone player here but I'm looking to get about rank 5. I would said I'm decently skilled from a decade of playing TCGs. What deck should I make to achieve that?
These are the levels of my classes, with mage being highest at 44:

What do you think about replacing Flame Imp with Murloc Raider

No, it's pretty much irreplaceable. I tried playing blood imps but that 1-cost 2-1 is really important for a strong start.

Currently rank 14 on a winstreak. Great deck!
I think the most important strategy to keep in mind is tempo.
Edit: Rank 13 now!

Currently made it to rank 15 with the deck. I'm getting around a 75% win rate.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone.
This is the mech mage I came up with, how should I improve it:

Flamewaker seems to be an essential component which is effectively behind a $25 paywall for me. What a sad circumstance.
This severely limits the number of options but what are some decks which do not require expansions (or just the first wing)?

Most comfortable with mage, have the most cards for mage.
Thanks a bunch for your help.
