I just try to play around them. Knowing when the AoE spells can be played is important. Hold back some minions when you expect AoE to be played and try to clear their minions if possible. Usually your opponent will play it as soon as they can and have no minions out. S o you can quickly regain board control if you put 2-3 minions in play and they have none. Also, I try to mulligan for the cards that are beefy enough to survive most AoE spells. Minions with 3+ health like Voidwalker, Shieldbearer, and Master Swordsmith as well as Argent Squire are strong plays. Add in a Young Priestess to buff and only a few wipes will really hurt (Lightning Storm or Blade of Furry Combo). Try not to have a board full of 1-2 health minions if possible. 

Went on a nice like7-8 win streak. Went from 18 to 13 in a couple hours. I put in an Iron Beak Owl for an archer because taunts were killing me around 13. Sitting at 12 right now.

edit: now up to Rank 9. Both days I was able to earn the max 100 gold relatively easy.
