They could always nerf BGH by changing its mana cost or stats and that way those classes wouldn't lose BGH as a removal.
They cant because his argument here was that its limiting the game so the mechanic in itsself needs a rework acording to that logic.
That wasn't his argument at all. Simply balancing BGH while keeping his effect the same would not go against his logic. The Black Knight has a similar effect but does not cause the same issues for going forward with the game that BGH does because his effect is balanced by his extra cost and the less average tempo swing when played.
The popular suggestion is to have BGH deal big damage to big minions and not completely wipe said minion out unless said minion had too little health. My suggestion was to merely turn BGH into a card that can only TRULY be used to recover. A lot of people dislike the idea of making him into a card that is used best to recover. It would be super easy to play around though, which is a problem.
Turn 2 Dr. Boom is a thing with Druid, and not having that one piece of essential removal can kill you early on, and that's a problem, so something would need to be done to make it work still, if anything at all.
Just increase the cost to 5 or something, that seems like the Blizzard way to go. The OP's suggestion almost changes the whole card.
I made mention of this before, that I believe it's a good nerf because it can only really be used to help recover and not outright retain full control of a board. I believe that should've been the point of the card in the first place. He just feels really easy to abuse under the right circumstances, and with Brewmasters and cards like Shadowstep, it can be really easy to clear a strong board.
But this is why I wanted to have this discussion with people in the first place. Everyone has their own idea, I'd like to think, and it's cool to talk about design like this.
This is a ridiculous idea. What a way to super throttle a card to death so it doesn't have its' base identity kept intact. Appreciate the enthusiasm, however, this isn't a very good idea.
Why not just switch the battlecries of BGH and Hemet Nesingwary?
This is what a number of people have suggested, and I'm somewhat in favor of such a thing. As someone had noted previously, BGH and Hemet would have appropriate sounds when played, so... ja.
How about this? i dont think this will create the same design limitations as the current version, and this is not a direct nerf, as it can then be used to kill smaller things, if your opponents board gets out of hand.
What do you think?
I like this version quite a lot, because if your MC Tech fails, you can play this, in the case that there are still four minions. This would even combo with Brann Bronzebeard.
Out of all the cancerous cards out there, this is the one you want to pick a fight with? Seriously?
Welp, the vote results speak for themselves...
I personally have no issue with BGH. Never did, never will. This was a hot topic buzzing in the heads of a number of people that I wanted to address.
Keep your silly assumptions to yourself.
What assumption are you referring to? My post is quite loud and clear, BGH is not a card that ruins game play in such a terrific way. Consider fighting a druid who will play turn two Innervate + Coin into Fel Reaver. Or someone plays alarm-o-bot into Deathwing turn 3 into turn 4 (with coin)...BGH is that noxious?
As previously stated, I have no issues with BGH. He's helpful, and I like that. He's a decent tempo play as well, immune to Shadow Word cards when the attack isn't altered, so on and so forth. This card was brought up by a number of people who wish for a nerf to come down when the next expansion rolls around. You had assumed I have a problem with the card, that's the assumption I'm speaking of. I merely wanted to shed light on ideas as to how to best nerf such a card if a nerf was necessary. I think my version is pretty cool because it helps keep the card in check to a degree. If you want to come back on the board, you enlist the help of the almighty BGH. I think it's a cool way to come back to some degree.
But really, this was just a discussion on nerfing BGH. I have no problems with him. I just think talking about a revision is cool, considering a number of people don't like him, and the consensus suggests that the only issue with BGH is that he negatively impacts card design. It's likely a nerf could take place, really. I just wanted to talk about such a thing with a few people, yourself included.
To be honest, a smaller card pool could make BGH STRONGER as it turns out, because there's less to choose from, and that means fewer big minions, which means BGH dominates even more so than ever before.
That is not a valid argument. The card pool size doesn't matter. What matters is whether people will regularly have a 7+ attack minion in their decks or not. Since Dr. Boom is played pretty regularly, Big Game Hunter has value in most games. If, as you claim, the upcoming change "means fewer big minions", BGH will lose value und will be used less in viable decks. And thus, be not a threat any more.
I mean, I did say it COULD make him stronger. It's speculative on my part because I see the other side of the coin quite clearly. You do have a point though.

I was just saying earlier about how it'd be cool to do 6 attack while presenting another factor, like the health dip. I like the idea of something like this too. It needs to have a condition attached, of course. The Legendary idea is nice as well.
This would make this card too conditional, there has to be a more elegant way to nerf it.
It's conditional just like Kezan Mystic is conditional. Not everyone has secrets, and not everyone has that 7 attack minion, but damn is it good to have the option available. People will even play these cards for the sake of tempo, because you need stuff on the board sometimes. Big Game Hunter is such a mainstay, people would still be willing to play it, considering that at some point he becomes useful. If you wanted to balance it more, he could MAYBE have the ability to remove 6 attack minions, but then that just makes the card stronger in some ways.
What would you do differently from me? I am curious, and I am looking for a discussion of sorts, so I'm all ears.
With talk of nerfs existing, coming up more and more thanks to the announcement of a new expansion and a new way to play, I thought to myself "Is there a way to nerf a card and maintain its' initial identity?"
Initially, I thought about mechanics that already exist in the game that players are familiar with. Big Game Hunter's stats are fine as is, so that's not needing tampering with, but what's important is the Battlecry. It's the one thing that makes it hard to play anything big like Dr. Boom. The idea for Big Game Hunter should have been to stabilize, not keep or maintain control, so why not nerf the card properly?
Below is the new Big Game Hunter that I think should exist once the new formats are introduced. Big Game Hunter SHOULD be used to help recover, not keep people locked down. Granted, it still retains that power it had before, but with a twist that makes sense, for the sake of making the card a bit better(?).
