I'm trying to collect information (yes, it is for a school based research project, what of it?) to show whether gamers are more/less/equally likely to be depressed than other people are. I felt that this was something actually worth collecting data to go against/support the stereotypes surrounding the online community. If you feel that you too want to find out these results, please post your results in this thread and I will let you know what my data shows once I have finished collecting information. Thank you all in advance! I believe this will interest many of you too, so I chose to make this the topic of my research project.
9 points, and the questions that I suppose scored that were mostly those about doing things slowly, losing interest about some things (nothing important) and that stuff, but I don't feel bad/sad at all (I'm just a project of sloth-human being :3).
As a person with a psychology degree I am glad you are doing research. Although I am not a fan on that test, I scored a ten but to be honest I was pigeon-holed into saying things that I didn't 100% agree with because there was no better choice. It's like if I asked is you were depressed and only gave you the choices A. Yes B. Somewhat C. Not so much
It felt very negative and i never had a chance to prove that I am not actually depressed. But this isn't really your fault a lot of depression testing does this .
Im sorry to say this, but it seems to me that you got your test group and the test itself wrong. You're testing gamers who use forums (vs all gamers) with no clear criterion of being a gamer. It would seem to me, that more correct approach would be to have a gaming-related question (i.e. time spent on gaming per week) and making comparisons based on that. Not only would it make the whole thing more transparent, it would also probably let you do some basic cause-effect analysis such as regression analysis, so that you would know that it is actually "gaming" that is responsible for depression.
Hope this helps.
Well, he said it's something for school, so I wouldn't expect a really "hardcore" project. I may be wrong, and of course, if it's something more "serious" then you'll need a better control of the variables, sample and all that stuff, so I wouldn't come here to ask about that.
If you just wanna collect some "not 100% reliable" [at all] info about people who just visit this game forums it may be OK then (cause as Carramba2302 said, you don't really know any of us, we can be real gamers or just casual guys here in this forum, we can invent the scores, blah blah blah...)
Wouldn't do it for a University project or something bigger anyway :)
9. That being said, I probably would have scored REALLY high several months ago. I used to be extremely depressed before I dropped out of school and gaming helped me a lot with that. In school I was an outcast that everyone picked on, but on the internet and in gaming, I've found a lot of things I'm good at and enjoy. I started off just making the occasional post on a forum, but then decided to make a guide. After success with that, I branched out more and more slowly. At one point, I had a fairly big youtube channel (considering how small the game was) and I found great joy in that. That's a big reason that I make signatures for people, one of my favorite things is making things and putting them up for people to see.
The gaming community really gave me a home, a place where I fit in, and helped pull me out of a really dark place. Just being in a community where people interact with you in a positive way is really helpful.
Here is a phenomenal spoken word poem by Shaun Koyczan called "To This Day." I highly recommend it to anyone who is depressed, especially if you were/are bullied in school. Even if you aren't, it's still an incredible video.
Also, if there is anyone feeling depressed and wants to talk to someone, I'd be more than happy to talk to you about it. On skype, in game, in forum personal messages, whatever. I've been through depression and made it out; I know what it's like and I know what made it better for me.

Note-I do not believe that this is against the forum rules, but will remove this post if it is.

Good luck with your research :)
10. Don't really think I'm mildly depressed, just indifferent.

I did move this to the appropriate forum.
