I wanted to extend my thanks for the nerf of the extremely OP and broken deck. There were so many complaints and people quitting the game when they died from full 30hp. It's hilarious that all the "patron defenders" have come out of the woodworks. They insisted Patron would "never" get nerfed and are "shocked" when it did. They also believe the nerf was far too excessive.
Let me be a "nerf defender" and justify exactly why the nerf was necessary and why it had to be to this extent. Your proposals for a tiny or token nerf would have done nothing but lower the winrate of Patron from 70% to 67% or so. Making Frothing a 2/3(vs 2/4) would not matter 95% of the time since you can OTK with 1 or 2 whirlwinds depending on how full the board is and whether you have double Frothings.
Making Warsong commander 4 or even 5 mana would not even matter because with the Emperor, you can do a OTK turn 7 or 8 anyway. Your whirlwinds are still free and if you needed another one, unstable ghoul would cost just 1 mana. Even making Warsong an aura for 3 attack would still punish your opponent's 1 and 2 attack minions as you can fill your board with Grim Patrons and wipe their board in the process. This is why Buzzard had to become 5 mana.
All of this restricted future design space because every 1 and 2 attack minion would have to take the broken Patron Warrior deck in account and also would be prevented from seeing play. My own Warlock can't even run Implosion just because of Patron Warrior. I look forward to being able to run Implosion again and not auto lose to that broken deck. Also every 3 attack minion would need to be balanced around Warsong because they would gain charge. The big nerf to Warsong frees up design space for powerful 3 attack minions as a result for all future expansions.
Finally, Warsong can not cost only 2 mana because it has a huge upside. Blizzard knows that people will just complain about facewarrior. If you thought facehunter was bad, imagine every charge minion hitting your face for 1 extra damage! At 3 mana, Warsong is still a stickier raid leader for facewarriors. Patron Warrior is not dead, but no longer a tier 0 deck, but now a balanced tier 2 deck.
You may ask what your options are? Most of you will be surprised to learn that Warriors have a charge spell: http://www.hearthpwn.com/cards/646-charge this will simply replace Warsong. I can see the pros trying out all kinds of new types of Patron decks, perhaps with sea and molten giants. OTK is not likely to happen anymore but you can still do 10 or 20 damage with the combo. Druids do just fine with Fon+Roar and Warriors will do just fine with their own finisher, Charge+giant or charge+frothing. I am not worried and you shouldn't be either. :)
As for Boom, I bet his usage will hit 50%(see Hearthpwn cards) and this will be when he gets the "Warsong" treatment. Would not be surprised if he ends up costing 9 mana or bombs target a random character(instead of enemy). Boom severely restricts design space when people just run him instead of class legendaries. This really hurts sales of packs. He's been "watched" for a while now just like Warsong and we all know what happens to "watched" cards. I know there's no "current plans" to nerf Boom, but it's only a matter of when. I look forward to being able to buy packs again and crafting 9 class legendaries to replace Boom.
