hello! new here, thought I would post something to get a little help on starting off my game.
I got in by getting my key from blizzard. Funny story, I've had it since October, but I kept checking the wrong e-mail, so for 2 months I had no idea I was in the beta lol, but I'm in now, so I need some help.
I've gone through all the basic tutorials and stuff, did everything they told me to except for an arena run. I know that arena is like draft picking? they get you a pack from a set and you make a deck? that's my general understanding of it, and that it cost money to play arena matches.
So what I'm asking here is, what's a good way to farm gold without actually having to buy it? also, what's a strong deck to play for someone who's just starting off?
personally, I really like how Shaman works, I like having a lot of monsters on board, or having a ton of control of the game, so I think Shaman fits that taste pretty well.
Are there also any threads or guides I can look at to simple deck building, basic strategies, and stuff like that?
I come from playing Yugioh, (even though this game is much similar to magic) So most card concepts i learn from this game are being picked up pretty well.

You can pay 150 gold instead to run arena, and between quests and 100g/day from getting multiple wins in Play mode, (Ranked and Casual) you can probably afford to either buy packs or play arena pretty regularly. Basically the way arena works is you're presented with 30 sets of 3 cards of varying rarities, and you pick one card from each set of 3 and do so 30 times until you construct a 30 card deck. You don't keep the cards you draft for arena but you do win awards based on how many wins you get with the deck before you lose with it three times.

There are several quests you can do for gold starting off, such as unlocking every class, getting each class to level 10, and beating each Expert AI. This should stockpile some gold for you so you can then either buy packs or try your hand at Arena. You can also grind gold in Play mode, you get 10 gold for each 3 wins you score in Play mode, up to a max of 100 per day.

Shaman is a lot of fun! You also get access to Fire Elementals which are the best creatures in the whole game. A basic Murlock + Bloodlust deck can probably earn you quite a bit of gold early on in Casual mode.
I'm glad you're picking up the game and hope you have lots of fun learning how to play along with the rest of us. :3
Arena is great. For many (myself included) it is the main part of the game, casual/ranked is secondary. Arena is deceptive though, because it's actually a little bit unforgiving vs. ranked. In ranked/casual, you'll start out facing people such as yourself, new players. If you have a background in CCGs, you'll probably faceroll for a few days without many losses, but it will eventually become a challenge.
Arena is tough right out of the gate. You may get lucky and face another new player, or you could face the best arena player in the world in your very first game (however unlikely), so many new players to Arena get discouraged because of this. With arena, moreso than even constructed, I'd recommend checking out a certain fella named Vivafringe. He has a thread here on the arena forums and a twitch channel. He's not the only fellow around but personally, I'd say he's the best I've encountered in terms of helping you with your arena deckbuilding/play.
As far as decks to play.. in Arena, pick about 3 maybe 4 classes and only pick them (especially early on). It pays to master a few classes as Arena costs gold/real money, and you can't afford to spend a lot of time feeling everyone out. Anyone class has a solid shot at Arena, though Hunter is often ranked a little bit lower because it can be hard to rely on the classes' innate Beast synergy when you're drawing random cards.
In ranked, you really can't go wrong with any class. I'd say try everyone out in casual and see who you like. I play Druid, though some consider Druid very weak, but unless you plan on winning tournaments, Druid can clean house all of the way to the top ranks.
