I have a hard time explaining when it's correct to hit face. There is a school of thought that as long as your health isn't 0, it doesn't matter what number it is, and then there are people who think pressuring life is the strongest play and forces the opponent to be reactive.
So when do you go face? I find I get too wrapped up in trading the board, and only end up going face when I have complete control, which loses me a lot of match-ups.
Well that depends on deck, board situation and stage of the game. Best example is Zoo for me. I go face when ever there are only bad trades to have. I want to keep a solid number of minions, I have 6 buffing minions, 3 removal spells so why should I run my let's say 2 flame imps in a leper in a minion if I have a good chance of drawing into a better solution and I only have to trade 2 minons, maybe even one. I rather have the damage in.
Warrior for example is different because I'm on a timer. If I keep removing his minions he'll stabilize soon so you remove only key minions and only with good trades.
The bottom line is, don't trade if your trades suck and leave you in a worse position than the one you would be otherwise. Why trade when you can force your opponent can trade for you, why get a few extra damage in if you can stop the tempo of the enemy in one round.
Value is to be searched but always in mind that greedy plays to establish an better play or lethal the next turn are often the right choice.
Go face unless you expect your rival to come with a favorable trade if you do. You can go face still, but then you have to be sure you'll be able to keep the pressure without a board.
The hard thing is to guess your rival play correctly, that's where experience comes to play.
Knowing when to go face, and when to trade off is really difficult, and really depends on the situation at hand.
Maybe try posting your current decklist, and take a screenshot of situations where you're not sure (just press the 'print screen' button on your keyboard and Hearthstone will take a picture of the current screen and place it on your desktop), and upload them here? That way we can comment on each situation and hopefully develop your understanding of when to go face a bit better? :)

It's always about the opponent's possible plays next turn.
Personally i feel that you should look at the mana that he will have next turn, and ask yourself whether you can handle the minion buff that he put up next turn.
The "Argus Test" is one example. Before you go face now, ask yourself "can i handle those minions next turn if he Arguses them? Or the simple "Taunt Test", asking "will a taunt minion next turn swing the board completely in his favor next turn if i keep those 2 minions alive?".
Usually i find that it's better to clear his board or trade up instead of going face. I guess it depends on the decks you play. If you are playing a super aggro deck with no card draw or ways to replenish your hand effectively, then your only option is to go face all the time and hope he doesn't recover. If you are playing midrange or control, u usually want to keep his board as empty as possible.
Midrange and control players prefer to keep the opponent's board as empty as possible, even if it means the same for their own board.
I probably don't need to say it but I still add it. You cash in as much value as you can in a reasonable way when it's board clear turn. against priest T4 if you have potential combo targets on the board, T5 2 health minions because nova. t4 against paladin 2 health minions and t4 against druid with 1 health minions.
