I agree that Diablo 4 looks awesome. But I don't know any more what we can expect from this company. We know for sure that it will have an in-game shop, and considering Blizz's approach on this topic it seems a thing very, very scary.
I mean, the pre-release stuff on Diablo 4 looks promising as hell, like Blizzard finally got the message on D3 (that being that Path of Exile was the real D3, not Blizzard's cartoon monstrosity with an auction house slapped on top).
You've gotta hope that Diablo Immortal fails, just to discourage Acti/Bliz from pulling all sorts of pay2win shit with D4. Seriously, the aesthetics, style and physics look amazing. Hopefully they don't fuck it up through greed.

Yep, it looks awesome!
Just hook it to my veins!
Path of Exile 2 looks awesome too, and at least this is not a company that loves to fuck his customers. So, I have better hopes (this trailer is one year older than Diablo).
It's entirely possible I'm missing something here as I played maybe 5 minutes of Diablo Immortal before uninstalling.
I played Diablo 3, bought both the expansions, wasn't initially impressed but felt it ended up being a pretty good game, albeit not as good as Path of Exile.
I played through the main story with every class, and if Nightmare/Hell style New Game + things were in the game then I did a couple of those as well. I also did some rifts, moved my numbers up a bit, got some sets and then got bored and stopped. I never got near any leaderboards, those were for people who had invested way more time in the game than I had any intention of doing.
1. I could do all that without paying in Immortal too, right?
2. I detest loot boxes that you pay for with real money, and how they're used to make the cost of keeping up with a game spiral out of control. Immortal's certainly look egregious. But what does the paywall actually stop me from doing in this game?
If in the base single player game there's a leaderboard and/or PVP system that's reserved for whales, can't you just treat it as though it doesn't have those features?
3. Would the game actually match me up in PVP against people who had spent $10,000 in the game, or could I still do PVP and be matched against players with similar power levels and accept that I'm never going to feature on the leaderboards?
Thanks.
1) Yes. You can play all game for free without paying. The issue is how the experience can be good because you have to deal with people that are spending in it. And in my opinion, since the entire end game consists in activities to get stronger, it becomes a useless game. Because as F2P, you can reach a very low level of power compared to who pays. And the more you pay, the stronger you get. But if you pay, the game is useless anyway because there will always be those who pay more than you.
2) Diablo Immortal is built around hidden loot boxes. The loot boxes are the "legendary crests". It is a hidden system because you have to do a dungeon before open these legendary crests. According to someone, Blizzard did it in this way in order to avoid the laws regarding loot boxes. Anyway, people are not stupid and Netherlands and Belgium practically answered: "We know what you are doing, you will not avoid our laws, go to fuck off with your game" and they banned this game in these countries.
You need a crazy amount of legendary crests in order to have and to upgrade legendary gems to put in your weapons and armours. This will give a direct buff in percentage to your health and damages. It is estimated 110K for the full upgrade of your gems.
3) No. There is only one leaderboard, so you will have to deal with spenders and whales. And 10k is not a lot. If you are unlucky, you can have in your server people that spend much more. You cannot change server :)
The game is sadistic. It is built to make you spend and to make you happy, while you kill who does not spend.
(This is "only" 4K of in-game purchases. Yes, you can have "fun" at least you don't find someone that spend more than you). This is how PVP is balanced.
I also want to point out that PVP is not just BGs. The whole end game is PVP, because the goal is to become Immortal (and you become immortal with PVP).
Anyway, now that we have more accurate estimates, it seems that it is required 500K and not 110K to max out a character.
In conclusion. This game is only free on the facade. It is made to make you spend a lot of money in pointless legendary gems with loot boxes. End game is also very repetitive and considering the PVP prohibitive (at least you don't want to spend 110K or 500K on it) it can only be defined as useless junk.

Honestly, yeah, that's very important. The feeling of being about to die at any moment is not there yet.

LOL, In-game debt.
This might happen also with HS and the Runestones.

Blizzard is so hilarious.
