Blizzard wants to encourage interaction. If they introduce auto squelch, a lot fewer people will be able to respond to emotes. Therefore, they won't add the feature.
Hearthstone Deck Tracker has a plugin that can do this automatically at the start of each game: AutoSquelch. You can download the file here, explanation of how to set it up can be found here.
I have been using it for a while now and it works just fine, but it does require double click at te start of your game session because you have to open HDT as well ;)
I like how Blizzard "wants" the community to interact when most of them (Brode aside) wouldn't touch the community with a 10-foot pole.
Most HS players are toxic AF, I don't blame them for avoiding us like the plague. But that double standard/excuse is just stupid.

Start of Year: Provoke the failure of 3 expansions, force nerfs on otherwise balanced cards, bring deckbuilding to an all-time low and get rotated one year earlier for being such a threat to the game's health. - Genn and Baku's historical entry on the White Book of Shit Design, shortly before retiring unpunished

That is because Team 5 are just a bunch of silly nerds (except for Ben Brode). Did you see their faces? All of them scream "I'm a f...king stupid nerd, please kill me". :P Seriously, except for mr. Brode, all of them are disgusting as f...k.

Well, sorry to disappoint you, but "squelching" DOES NOT affect your opponent's ability to use emotes (you can check it yourself by spectating your own game with another account). As for their "interactivity", its approximately on the same intellectual level as showing somebody that well-known "middle-finger" gesture, and to be honest, they are used with exactly the same meaning quite often, hehe.

I really like how you contrast "the disgusting silly nerds" with a respectful "mr. Brode" xD

In the time it took you to write this post you could have squelched your opponent.
Then unsquelched him
then resquelched him
AT LEADT TEN TIMES.
