HUGE CHANGES TO THE DECK
Try to ignore most of these things as I just made some big changes to the list as all you may know by now, a bunch of DH cards have gotten nerfed..SO what I did was literally brought down the nerfed cards to x2 (being Skull + Adept. Will soon edit the list but, for now I wanted to at least update the most important thing on this page, the deck itself.
Changes made: 7/24/2020
This deck has quite a bit of synergy behind it. There are several win conditions which are:
1. Having Nethrandamus ramp up efficiently with your cards that can summon multiple minions at a time such as, Umberwing, Coordinated Strike, Satyr Overseer, Command the Illidari, as well as Coilfang Warlord = 2 minions in one which the rush dies which is a nice activation towards the dragon. Last but not least, Dragonqueen Alexstrasza = 3 minions in one (or more if the dragons you get can generate more).
2. Zephrys the Great and Dragonqueen Alexstrasza are win conditions on their own.
Kadak running the deck in Legend, except this was the older version before we swapped out Consume Magic for Cobalt Spellkin and Imprisoned Antaen for Metamorphosis. Nonetheless, this is a great showcase imo.
Reasons for running certain cards:
1. Wrathscale Naga We run this because, it pairs really well with the x2 Rush spells as listed above. So you can play this on 6 with x3 1/1 rushes and have this proc 3 times for 9 damage being split up. (Or, it could be more if you already have 1+ minion on board).
2. Furious Felfin Is ran because, well, it's a 2 Mana 4/2 Rush. That is just too good of value to pass up.
3. Having Altruis the Outcast paired with Dragonqueen Alexstrasza is just way too good. This is if Altruis sticks for one turn (which can be likely) followed up with Dragonqueen Alexstrasza. x2 free procs with the 0 cost dragons that you get as they always go to the right side of your hand. (Or it can be the other way around but holding onto the 0 cost dragons isn't usually optimal). This isn't what the deck revolves around strictly, but, it's definitely a nice feature in the deck.
4. Update! I cut Mana Burn for Cobalt Spellkin. I did this because, I found how consistent it really is for DH, especially highlander. What are the ONLY 1 costing spells for DH? Mana Burn and Consume Magic so, you will ALWAYS pull those. Either x2 of one, or x1 of each. It also gives more juice for Altruis the Outcast. This way, you also have another card costing 3 or more vs running a 1 cost card which is giving us more value for Skull of Gul'dan. With that said, Cobalt Spellkin will put the spells in your most-right side of your hand meaning it'll put Consume Magic in a spot where you can outcast it for that nice card draw.
5. There are more reasons behind the majority of the cards that have been included but, it's self explanatory after explaining what I've explained thus far.
Mulligan Tips:
Well now that you have a basic understanding of how the deck works, let's get to the hard part of understanding exactly what to mulligan and/or what to keep in our starting hand.
First, you almost never want to keep Wrathscale Naga as it's a combo piece that comes later on, on turn 6 to 8 with the Rush spells.
Secondly, if it's a fairly slow match up and if you see Nethrandamus AS WELL as Coordinated Strike and/or Command the Illidari then you could for sure consider keeping those as it makes that 9 drop safe to keep for the late game as it is able to ramp up potently. Otherwise, don't keep them if you know you should look for better answers in the early game vs Fast Decks such as Hunter, other Demon Hunter's maybe Druid with half of them having a bunch of early to mid Treant cards.
Never keep any of your 7 to 9 Mana cards unless with the only exception being what I've recently just mentioned above.
You almost always want to mulligan for non combo/cheap cards such as, your low costing weapons, the 2- Rush, so on and so forth. Non combo cards I'm talking about that you do NOT want to keep in hand are things like Feast of Souls, Altruis the Outcast since you need multiple cards to proc those. BUT, on the other hand, only times you can for sure consider keeping those is when you see Coordinated Strike paired with Feast of Souls (meaning both showing in your starting hand). Another exception with keeping Altruis the Outcast is, when and if you have, say, a cheap 1 cost card that is on the left side of your hand, and/or Twin Slice.
Only time/s you keep Skull of Gul'dan is, when it's on the FAR LEFT side of your starting hand, OR if you got a cheap card to the left of it. Meaning, if Skull is your 2nd card of being to the far left and the MOST left side card next to it being a cheap card that you know you're going to play like 1 to 4/5 Mana or so, then definitely keep it in hand.
Card Replacements:
If you don't have Kayn Sunfury, you can replace him for Maiev Shadowsong, if you don't have either of those, they can be replaced with: Bone Wraith as well as Illidari Felblade as these are solid 4 Mana cards.
Metamorphosis can be subbed out for a few 3 drops. Frozen Shadoweaver and Bad Luck Albatross
Play-Style Tips:
Majority of the time, you'd want to play Dragonqueen Alexstrasza BEFORE playing Nethrandamus because, you can bait out board clear with Alex 8/8 and maybe only 1 other dragon on the side (you play both dragons you get from her if needed in certain circumstances). AND if Alex generates a dragon that requires you to have a dragon in hand, you'd want Nethrandamus in hand so you can active the dragon/s you get from Alex. This deck is all about tempo swinging and baiting their board clear / removal. Knowing which cards to play first to bait their removal then you can either bait a 2nd time or go wide, if you do bait the 2nd time, go wide on the 3rd time. Be patient with your combos but not too patient.
(more tips to come, this is for the time being)
To wrap things
up:
Changes: Replaced Spectral Sight for Sightless Watcher. Reasons Behind This Change: After the increase of the 1 Mana cost of Eye Beam, Skull of Gul'dan and Imprisoned Antaen, it is now harder to pull off Outcast. After these nerfs hit DH, it is now a little harder to dump the hand as easy as it used to be. That same reason applies to why we run Feast of Souls over Consume Magic (easier dumps = easier to outcast).
Random tip when playing against priests:
If you get a mana burn card from cobalt spellkin or whatnot, try to wait to play either nethrandamus or Alexstraza along with mana burn on turn ten since priests' silence-and-destroy-all-minions card costs 9 mana. This will leave them with 8 mana and a harder job clearing the board. If you get two mana burns, even better since you can line each of them up with neth and alex.
Three cards in this deck just got nerfed. Altruis is more expensive (they gave him one more attack power as well for some reason - not sure why since he will never survive long enough to actually attack something). Thinking of swapping him out for something else since he's so situational already.
Glaivebound Adept has one less attack now, which isn't really a big deal for that card, and battlefiend starts out with one less attack as well (unfortunate, but again not a huge deal I guess).
I'm curious to see if you'll change up the deck at all, especially altruis.
Edit: forgot to mention that I got to diamond 3 so far with this deck - it really is good once you get used to it. Been bouncing around between diamond 3 and 4 last night and today. Not sure whether I'll modify after today's nerfs.
Hey guys,
I tried out this deck and made a showcase of the updated version of this deck! If you are interested in a gameplay video with commentary in legend ranks you can check it out bellow.
I hope you can enjoy it :)
this is a pretty fun deck dude. thanks for the post!
I just want to chime in here and say a few things. First off, thanks for the deck! I can understand why some people aren't impressed with it because it really does take some getting used to in order to use it effectively, as the strategy and synergy can be a bit complex (at least for me). I bounced around between something like gold 8 and gold 6 for awhile before I really got the hang of this deck. Today I went from gold 8 to platinum 10 in a few hours after feeling like I finally got the hang of it. It really is a good deck (and fun to use), but be prepared to spend some time with it in order to master it.
Disclaimer: I have never hit legend rank (and don't know if I ever will). I got to [I think] rank 2 a few years ago when the ladder worked completely differently than it does now, then took a break from the game for a few years and just returned with the new expansion, so I'm still getting my sea legs back so to speak.
Man, very well put.. I really like how you worded this and this is exactly what I was trying to get people to understand! This is practically a tempo swinging deck that requires certain combos. Again, thank you so much for this amazing comment +1
Just hit diamond 10 using this deck today! Hoping to ride it to legend.
Please do not disenchant Velen. there are always some neat combos with him.
I would rather dump Moroes.
I agree but at least Moroes is a Neutral card. It isn't even bad either with some cards to pair with it. Am I saying to run Moroes? No, but it's at least a 3.5 star card with the right cards to go with it. Prophet? You're better off running Malygos Druid / Malygos Rogue / Malygos Warlock / Malygos Shaman for all that. Why run Prophet when you can run what, x4 different Malygos decks?
Well, we have different opinions of the use of cards then.
Moroes is a 1/5 for me, because it's slow and has a underwhelming effect.
Velen ist better and can be used for OTK combos (along with Malygos, you do not have to choose between them). It's still for it's mana cost and use only a 2, maybe 2,5/5, but i'd keep him for potential combos.
Yeah, I was just thinking with Moroes in a deck to back him up like, decks that want a sticky board and/or wide board / end of turn amplifiers, he feels roughly a 3 star card. On his own, just thrown in a "random" deck, yes he's like 1/5. Same with Prophet, right? Imagine Prohpet with like literally no spells to back him up, he'd feel like a 1.5 star since he'd basically be a Vanilla 7 mana 7/7. Have cards to back up Prophet and he's like 3 to 3.5 stars, basically the same applies to Moroes. Moroes is at least 2.5 to 3 ish/5 in the correct deck to back him up imo.
All things considered, I will have to agree with you though that Moroes is a safe disenchant for the most part.
10 games, 6 losses, ty for deck, dis
You went 4-6? Maybe you're playing the deck a little wrong which is fine. It could be that you've been getting countered and out mulligan'd which can happen regardless of what deck you're running. I've been finding a lot of success with it to be honest. If you need help running it, I can coach on discord, PM me if interested.
Sadly this deck doesn't cut it in the current meta. Fun to play, yes. Fun if you win once in a while, yes. But is it worth it in the current 90% quest priest meta? No.
Sadly, you can't judge it if you lose with it a small portion of times. Is it an easy deck to play? No, you gotta understand how and when to hold onto cards properly, it's a tempo swinging combo deck, it's not an easy deck. It's not your typical aggro DH. If you lose with this deck or any other meta tier decks, it doesn't mean it's bad, it could be that, 1. You've been getting out mulligan'd , match up is in opponent's favor, or you're just straight up misplaying. This isn't strictly towards you, it's strictly a general statement.
Your point would be quite valid having the list not having Flamereaper (which is insane vs priest) + Blade Dance + Chaos Nova + Immolation Aura + Wrathscale Naga package. These are ALL amazing answers vs priest. Priest is favored vs face / aggro DH, NOT this version. Point blank period.
the deck works pretty well and has good sinergy, but warlocks now are our counters right? its kinda difficult to beat them <.>
btw nice deck is pretty funny and interesting, very enjoyable
Quest Priest is super easy to beat as DH though, simply don't leave any damage on the field so they can't heal. Use your cards to clear his board and watch them flail about as you have 8 cards on hand and they have 2 when they finally get their upgraded hero power at which point you'll be swinging for 10+ per turn
They don't really counter us cause their deck is more so built around the majority of DH's which got a vast majority of demons which is giving the warlock way too much value with Sacrificial Pact as with this list, it has response cards and not many demons so they'll be holding on to Pact for awhile which will buy you time to combo with your tempo swings and such. Also, we got insane board clear which can be very good into warlock, especially their invokes and what not. Kinda hard to explain exactly where I'm trying to get at all around with this but.. I hope you see where I'm getting at.
