Format
Day 1
This tournament was played with the 16 eligible players divided into 2 Lobbies, A and B. On Day 1 three games were played in each Lobby, with a simple scoring system, ranging from 7 points from first place to 0 points for last place, with the rest of the rules the same as you would find in any other Lobby in Hearthstone. The first 4 players in the standings after 3 games in each Lobby make it through to the Top 8 on Day 2.
Day 2
In the Top 8 on Day 2 was played in the so called "Check Format". What this means is that the players get points for their ranks in each game, just like on Day 1. Instead of capping off after 3 games however, the point total is counted up to 20 points, which is the "Check" point.
After the moment a players gets 20 points their goal is to end as a winner in 1 Game, which secures them the victory. So getting a first place before hitting 20 points does nothing. This means several players can end up with 20 points, and that multiple games might have to be played to decide a winner and that the first player to 20 might not end up the winner, if they cannot secure a first place finish afterwards.
Results
All those plans for the Check format kind of fell flat however, since the winner, BeNice, went straight to the Check point in 4 games and then won the Lobby on their first game after it! In the interview after the event he opined that the Check Format was very exciting for the viewers, since you cannot play it safe, and you are somewhat forced to try and highroll and to go for that, and that this is less fun for the players, since he felt that he just got lucky.
This is however a stretch by a notably humble player, since he came into this tournament one of the most decorated Ladder players in Battlegrounds from the very start and ended up not getting lower than 4th place all day. It wasn't just luck that brought him this tournament win (though the final game of the tournament which had him highroll into a Amalgadon very early was definitely fortunate)!
Final Standings
Final Thoughts
Although the tournament ended up being shorter than anyone had thought it would be, we felt there is certainly potential with it, as the quality of game play was very high, and the format has potential in theory. The next Tournament will be in just over a month on May 14th and 15th, so we hope to see you again for that.
In the meantime, let us know your thoughts about this first official Battlegrounds tournament ever in the comments!
Lmao y'all be like ,,ReMoVe PoIsOn"
But 300/300 pirates or elementals aint a problem. And i wonder how would anyone beat those without poison. Mama bear+rat pack? xD
I was done watching it when I tuned in & some time after out of blue they said, that someone (from players) wasn't told, that this is not a practice(?) so they said this round (which they were already playing) will be cancelled & they'll start all over again ó_ó
Sir, this is a Wendy's ...
you cannot add reborn...?
Maexxna could have it. Divine shield scam comps with maexxna were okay, but adding reborn on top just made the thing unbearable.
I think the problem is these three together, the Amalgadon, Seafood Slinger or Brann Bronzebeard
With Brann it easy to get perfects Amalgadon, with Seafood you can easily have three Amalgadon on the field, and Amalgadon has access do poison and divine shield. and the cerry top is Amalgadon with posion, divine shield, windfury together with Prestor's Pyrospawn that removes opponents dinive shield...
No problem with murlocs getting poison, because it has no access to dinive shield easily, only with Hero or Selfless Hero and other compositions can get big stats really quick.
Poison is such an idiotic mechanic for battlegrounds
I'd say poison should have some place in Battlegrounds, but either very difficult to obtain or without the possibility to add reborn or devine shield
they should fix these poison builds.. and by fixing i mean remove them!
lets get that poison always yah what a skillful game did u roll poison wow u did wow ur'e so good at the game NOT
Most of the games ended up transitioning to poison endgame and almagadon. Blizzard needs to do something about endgame diversity if they want anyone to watch this.
I agree. But also a game in which win who is bigger doesn't seem so fun. So, I think that poison is necessary, at least it adds diversity.
