Microsoft Acquiring Activision-Blizzard for $68.7 Billion - Kotick Gone After Deal Closes
News broke that Microsoft is going to buy up Activision-Blizzard for $68.7 billion in cash in the biggest deal in the sector, and that the intended take over will keep Bobby Kotick on as CEO. Read more in this article, which we quoted below!
UPDATE: This article was updated with a tweet about further reporting that indicates Kotick will be out after the deal closes.
Quote from ReutersJan 18 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) said on Tuesday it was acquiring "Call of Duty" videogame maker Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O) for $68.7 billion in cash, the biggest deal in the sector that would help the Xbox maker become the third-largest gaming company by revenue.
Microsoft's offer of $95 per share is at a premium of 45% to Activision's Friday close. Shares of Activision were trading at $89.55 in trading before the bell.
"Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms," Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella said in a statement.
Microsoft has been making big investments in gaming, scooping up "Minecraft" maker Mojang Studios and Zenimax in multi-billion dollar deals in recent years.
Activision's library of games such as "Call of Duty" and "Overwatch" gives Microsoft's Xbox gaming platform an edge over Sony's (6758.T) Playstation, which has for years enjoyed a more steady stream of exclusive games.
Shares of the "Candy Crush" maker have slumped over 37% since hitting their record high last year, largely hurt by allegations of sexual harassment and other misconduct at the videogame company.
The company is still addressing those allegations and said on Monday it had fired or pushed out more than three dozen employees and disciplined another 40 since July.
Bobby Kotick will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard.

it's the end of heartstone???? :(
Why would it be?
Phil Spencer looks like he's 35. Maybe there is hope.
O_o
... do you think that might be because it's not just an expansion? I'll never understand the argument you just made. If they made a traditional sequel, so a new game, with a new engine, new user interface, all new maps, new heroes and new mechanics, and with none of the content from the first game, you'd consider that a sequel right? But then if they were done with development and decided "hey, we still got time, what if we also port every content from the first game into the sequel?" that would magically turn the sequel into "just an expansion?" Don't be silly.
If they add enough new content to match or exceed the content in Overwatch 1 on release, then there's just no argument that can be made about whether it's a sequel or an expansion. An expansion typically adds 10-20% of new content, not 100%.
I could honestly see Hearthstone getting the port rather than WoW. I would LOVE WoW to come to console, but they'd have to rebuild the user interface from the ground up again, mainly because just to cast spells, it would take every button on your controller to so, and you wouldn't even be scratching the surface of all the controls, that would cover your first bar of spells/buffs/debuffs, but not your hearthstone to return to your desired inn, or to look in your bag for items such as potions.
With Hearthstone, all you need is the diagonal buttons for cycling through your hand, hero for emotes/squealching, and the end turn button. You'd use your sticks to move the cursor around, and press A once to hover your selected card over the board, and A again to play it.
but that's just my assumption.
wow seems like nobody in microsoft have played HS lately
This will be a very good thing for Blizzard. Delivery time on Blizzard will FINALLY increase. It's amazing how slow things are. My guess is that this company has a big load of "bosses" and unneeded subdivisions, with people from "business" taking decisions based on personal opinions other than arguments, data and facts.
Take the example of Overwatch "2". That's not a damn sequel, that seems like an expansion. And it has probably like... 4 years of development? And an upcoming 5th year probably. 5 years for an expansion for a company as big as Blizzard? That's stupid.
Regarding Bobby... He can't go now, every company (no matter how big or small they are) they have a transition period between CEOs. That's ok. He'll be at max 1/1.5 years.
Kotick will be gone when it's all said and done. Microsoft won't allow Kotick to stay because he'd damage their branding as a whole. He'll get a golden pay day when he does go but at least he'll be gone.
Kotick damaged Microsoft's branding...?
Now it's worth noting the keywords of the press statements: Bobby will remain CEO for now as the deal has not been finished. After that point, it's very likely he will get cut
I Kick Kotick ffs !!!
I haven't seen so much skin on HS since Activision .
Stop buying this shit people!

I got some bad news about some misconduct in Blizzard too if you hadn't heard
I am cautiously optimistic about this. Does anyone know if that means Activision-Blizzard will become Microsoft-Blizzard, or just Blizzard again, or Microsoft-Activision-Blizzard, even? Does anyone familiar with how Microsoft operates have any ideas how this might actually affect the development of Blizzard titles?
Also, I’m “glad” that Bobby Kotick will be “serving” (himself) as the CEO still. /s
They'll rename it BAM!
I think Emeril Lagasse may have some words with that name...
I think they overpaid. Blizzard is just not worth near 70 billion nor is Activision.
What does this mean for titles like World of Warcraft and Hearthstone? Do they go to xbox? or will microsoft just have a hand in developing future expansions for each game?
or... neither?
Like with the Bethesda purchase ActiBlizz will be left to their own devices to an extent. Hearthstone will remain on PC/Mac/Mobile, and WoW will be as it is. (There's rumors that WoW is getting an Xbox version though.)
Microsoft is despicable. They virtue signaled to the max about how they were "re-evaluating their relationship" with Activision, but what they really meant was they were going to shower them in cash for abusing their employees.
Phil Spencer hates OTK Decks.
