Well, you have to gimp your deck by not running any good low mana spells (otherwise you board clear might fail in the late game) so you lose out on some control staples (fireball, frostbolt, frost nova, secrets, poly, primordial glyph, etc). So you are playing a greedy big spell mage, with I guess aggressive minions for early game to hold you over?
It just seems like to build a deck that guarantees good results with this card, you'd be making a worse version of any mage archetype than if you did include this card.
It works well with Deck of Wonders, though (not the spellstone, though). So maybe even more cards will make this better. Time will tell. It definitely seems like they are pushing "Big Spell Mage" this time around...Just going to have to survive that early game against aggressive decks without frostbolt or secrets (poly and fireball are "good enough" for a turn 5 clear if you don't have board control).
Good point. But the randomness of it will hurt it's playability. Excavate Evil also went into the opponents deck which could have had a negative impact, especially in combo decks (and it would come back to you as well). Not to mention that Priest had very few board clears.
And a Mirror Image is even worse whyle a Pyroblast is better... wtf what an obvious statement
Some Highlander mage should be really interesting and fun this expansion with cards like this. Can get rid of the clunky Alex and medivh win conditions and put in these tempo midgame cards which synergize with most of the spells in Highlander mage anyway. The new mage legend can be a secondary finisher
Wow mage is looking weird this expansion. First elementals, now dragons, what will they think of next?
Oh yeah and they also came out with a mage Beast
Hey they made Beast Druid why not Beast Mage
Beast mage incoming kappa
I like that Blizzard is pushing a new and different archetype (big spell mage).
Right now, though, there's not enough for it to be viable. There's no mechanism to ramp up to the spells or cheat them out (aka Big Druid or Big Priest), and mage doesn't have good early board presence in minions to stave off tempo decks. They need small spells... which screws up the definition of "Big Spell Mage". That, and the payoff isn't even good. Right now it's Dragoncaller Allana, which is nice if you get a bunch of 5/5's, but most classes have a way of dealing with a board like that, and after Allana is gone, what is left to follow up? The Big Priest/Druids have a way of continually loading the board with minions even after you've taken out the first wave.
But... this is the first set of an archetype like this, and Blizzard, if it wants to push an archetype, usually releases cards over a few expansions to make it work.
New hemet from ungoro can remove all low cost cards leaving the big cards. Whenever you’re ready just drop him and start drawing your big burn.
If this ends up being the new archtype for mage decks, it will make the already pretty useless book of wonders even more useless. Load up your deck with 5 0-cost spells, hindering your ability to get those high cost spells, and also gimping any other card that reveals a spell from deck.
Te spells cost 5. Not 0, they cast without paying anything when draw, but they cost 5.
Even if you include Fireball and Polymorph as midcost spells this is at least a 5-mana flamestrike...
All minions, not only enemie minions, still good imo.
good for control, okay in mid range, bad in tempo or secret
So drop this on turn 5 with an Arcane Tyrant in your hand. Deal damage and play a 4/4 Elemental in the same turn to keep the synergy with an elemental mage deck.
With the addition of Dragon's Fury, it looks like the "big spell" Mage archetype being pushed in this set would be very effective response to token or tempo decks - just keep using big AOE spells like Dragon's Fury, Flamestrike, and Blizzard to manage the board into the late game, and then close with Dragoncaller Alanna once your opponent is out of major threats. That said, the deck would probably be very vulnerable to Razakus Priest and Jade Druid decks, so it's success would be highly reliant on what decks are defining the meta.

I'm sure we can fit an extra EZ in there somehow
