I'm honestly tired of reading comments like "oh it's unfair to new players" and "why should I pay to be able to compete?". Hearthstone is a cardgame and requires the player to be consistently up to date with the card pool and meta if they want to be competitive. Almost no cardgame is "free to play", look at the most popular paper ones: MTG, Pokemon and Yugioh all require you to buy the newest sets and adhear to restrictive lists as to what can be played in their current competitive rules.
The only way the game could be made easier for people who don't want to pay is to have a mode that is specifically for players who either have not paid a certain amount in game yet or do not have a % of the standard cards collected.
I personally don't like this sort of system in a game about strategy. I understand that it harkens back to regular warcraft, with the hero units and what not, and WoW, but seriously... this is a competitive card game. Levelling up should only unlock things like banners, duel boards, icons, etc.
I really liked Day[9]'s concept for his Glacierpaw deck. I myself like any sort of deck that uses a minimal amount of creatures/minions, and opts for more spell cards.
