I've played with Academic Espionage a lot (and thief rogue even more). If you're playing with Academic, you should be dropping virtually all of the thief cards (aside from Tess or Cutlass). The reason for this is simple: Academic is a massive tempo card and you need to capitalize on it with as much draw as possible so that you can outtempo your opponent. Your deck has no draw aside from the two Minstrels and little to nothing in the way of defensive tools. You should be running things like Fan of Knives, Sprint, Witchwood Piper, Tar Creeper, Stonehill, Thalnos etc to both help you survive and to draw into your tools. I don't doubt that you made it from 5 to 2 but you were likely running up against very slow, high value decks that you could outvalue with your constant flood of cards. I imagine this would have a hard time standing against aggro outside of getting lucky and drawing Espionage + some crazy generated minions early.
Does this mean the thief cards are bad? Of course not. But they fit better in a deck like wild thief where you can use Ethereal Peddler to actually regain the tempo loss from playing the cards in the first place. In that type of deck, I would probably avoid Espionage or use a one-of as it doesn't provide much in the way of consistency.
