Hello and thank you in advance for your advice. I have all the non-legendary cards in barrens so now I want to start building up my collection from the older expansions currently in standard. Which expansion do you recommend that I focus on first and why?
Waiting for the mini set to invest your Gold into is good advice. It's somewhat subjective and really depends on what it is you want. If you want a fleshed out and powerful collection, the Year of the Mammoth had a lot of powerful cards (Un'Goro, Frozen Throne, Kobolds) that are still strong today. Year of the Dragon ended on a powerful note with Descent of Dragons, which has some strong cards in it. Witchwood and Boomsday have some strong stuff too.
All that being said, safest bet is to avoid sets like Rastakan's Rumble, The Grand Tournament, Gadgetzan, and Goblins vs Gnomes. Their power level just doesn't match up with Modern Hearthstone, and you wouldn't get much mileage from them.
I personally am slowly investing in fully collecting Journey to Un'Goro, as it's my all time favorite set. If you have a personal favorite set, I'd say that's the best one to collect :)
If you're interested only in standard cards, you can check Hearthstone Mathematics channel on YouTube and look for the video "State of Hearthstone: What Packs Should I Buy? The Safest Cards For Crafting After the Nerf.". It will give and idea about which expansions are more valuable to open packs.
I'd also recommend to save 2000 gold for the next mini-expansion, coming likely in June.
@Laysson - Thank you for your reply. I liked the last mini but all of its cards were from the madness set. If the next mini works the same way it would only give me a couple of legendaries since I already have everything else in the barrens set. Which set should I start buying packs in next? Ashes, Scholomance, or Madness.
@TheSpunYarn - Thank you for your reply. I tried some wild but it was a little too crazy for me. I just got back into HS after a few years away so I am missing most of the older sets. I figure I'll stick to standard for now and work on the most recent three sets.
I'd go with Darkmoon faire probably, just because of power creep. You won't be able to use scholomance any longer than darkmoon faire, and vice versa, speaking strictly from a standard view point. I only play standard, but I've played for 7 years and collected most all the cards as I went.
