Let's be completely honest, Blizzard is never going to include an LGBT character EVER. The majority of Blizzards audience are teens/young adults, and homosexuality is still very stigmatized in that area. Blizzard aren't going to alienate potential customers for the sake of political correctness. (On a side note I have nothing against that sort of thing).
I don't think that argument holds water. Plenty of major game developers have had homosexual characters in their work (Mass Effect and Dragon Age, for instance, while not quite as popular as Blizzard's games, are definitely mass-market titles that have sold millions of copies, maybe tens of millions altogether). It has nothing to do with marketing or "political correctness," either—you tell the stories you want to tell, about the characters you're interested in. Blizzard is, at bottom, a deeply conservative company, and they're just not interested in telling those stories, for better or worse.
Valeera comes from the comics, I think. Definitely the most obscure character from my perspective ("where's Garona?"), although I can imagine that somebody who never played WC3 and started playing WoW post-BC (especially an Alliance player) might have no idea who Rexxar is.
It's a pretty spotty cast of characters, and they could have done a much better job representing the different races. Valeera, Malfurion, and Rexxar are the only heroes who aren't either orc or human. Uther, Thrall, Gul'dan, Jaina—I can see why they just couldn't get around using those four. But Garrosh and Anduin Wrynn? Who are these Johnny-come-lately scrubs? Why not Cairne and Velen? Or, better yet, Muradin and Vol'jin? Hearthstone needs more dwarves and trolls!
Hopefully they'll release some alternate heroes one of these days.
