Spellfire: That other, other CCG that used recycled card art
Before they resorted to horribly staged photographs, TSR was using artwork from their Dungeons & Dragons franchise products, which had some of the best fantasy art around at the time.
I do like that Blizzard's games make use of a wide colour palette and have a number of iconic characters and designs, but I can't help but feel like the glory days of fantasy art are behind us. Am I wrong?
MtG still wins, in my opinion. Some of the old stuff was a bit dodgy (in an awesome way, haha) but the art for at least the past decade has been top notch.
It's nice to see that they finally put out another MTG artbook.
I don't play the game except the odd match of the digital version, but you're right, I just looked at some cards online and the artwork has definitely stepped up over the last few years.
EDIT: It looks like VIZ is putting out an Innistrad book soon, as well:
