It's routine maintenance. They do it almost every week, usual on Tuesday, with all of their games. I'm assuming they fix bugs and work out kinks in code, reboot, do general cleaning of their servers, etc...it helps everything run smoother.
They don't do it for Starcraft and I've yet to see Diablo 3 be affected by this either. Granted I don't play d3 much anymore lol. I play all of blizzards games and WoW was the only one I ever saw affected by their "weekly maintenance." I mean if sc2 doesn't need it why does hearthstone? I understand why WoW does because its a huge game with millions of players on (what used to be) tons of different servers. But I'm really not convinced that hearthstone needs to be down for like 8+ hours like WoW.
Does anybody actually know any real facts about this? Maybe I should find the blizzard hearthstone forums and ask. I've never actually been there but they must exist right?! lol.
Btw I'm not trying to complain about it. If they need to do it, they need to do it. But it really honestly feels like this game isn't this giant needy beast which requires constant manicures, massages and scent therapy to continue functioning properly.
Blizzard is pretty "careful" with their servers. Every Bnet game since WoW started having weekly maintenances, for whatever reasons, but they increased intervals later. They also went back to weekly maintenance with expansions for a while.

I wouldn't think it would need it. Whats up with that? Is this game really complex in coding or something?

It's not always weekly and sometimes its just a 15min reset.
Nozdormu wins you every game where you opponent has to go to the bathroom on turn 9.
