So i ended up blowing $20 for Kharazan, and that's it. I enjoyed those quests and getting those interesting cards! I now win about half of my games in casual mode (all I've ever played) thanks to those cards and about 8 other original series packs i got from quests. perhaps this is because all the hard core players just play "ranked".
One last noob question. As a 4-5 hour per week player, should i only play casual? What's the upside of playing ranked? I suspect I'd get beat nearly all the time!

Playing ranked gives rewards, and I don't really know if you can consider wins in casual all that great. Reason being is that, people who play in casual, either play classes/decks just to complete their daily quest, testing out new decks, or playing meme decks and dont want to effect their rank. I would say, as a new player try to get rank 10, as with a cheap deck it's pretty easy (i actually am not sure because im not sure how far you are into the game or how much skill you have developed), I used a cheap midrange hunter as its probably the best cheap deck out there. Among that rank 10 rewards are pretty bad, so I would try getting rank 5. Rank 5 is good because you get a golden epic making 400 dust and 2 golden commons making 100 dust so 505 dust + card back for rank 5. In ranked though however, people past rank 15 maybe even below rank 15 will be playing semi-constructed or even fully constructed decks. You may run into meme decks however, at 15, 10 and 5, since you don't lose stars at those ranks. As a recommendation, I suggest that you play ranked no matter what, and only use casual for quests or for testing out new decks while you're at a mid-floor rank. Now if you happen to reach to rank 5, be aware grinding to legend (especially with a cheap/budgeted deck) will take a tremendously long grind (took 10+ hours of play for DisguisedToast) to go from rank 5 to legend. I reached legend once, and never tried to again. The grind isn't really rewarding because the only difference is that you get about 45 extra dust compared to rank 5 rewards which technically is just the value of dusting your normal 4/1 packs. Either way, hopes this helps! Let me know if you want to play some practice matches (You can add me Battletag: Qnxiety#1557))
Rank 10 is bobbins, you only get an extra golden common. Rank 5 is what you need to get. I only get to rank 15 on my arena accounts then concentrate on trying to hit rank 5 on my EU main account. (Sometimes I hit rank 10 on my arena accounts just by doing dailies but it's just a bonus).
Can't be arsed going for legend just for a card back and 25 extra dust.
They should award an extra golden rare at rank 10 to make it worthwhile. (EDIT: So rank 15 would be golden common, golden rare, rank 10 golden common, 2 golden rares, rank 5 golden common, golden rare, golden epic). Then rank 10 would be worth aiming for.
Note to self: When playing Hearthstone on the cheap## plan, do NOT play ranked battles on the first day of the month. Holy crap did I get my ass handed to me by all-epic/legendary decks on the way up!

no no, it probably seemed harder because all the ranks got reset for the new season so all the top legend players etc are at low ranks until they begin their climb so games will seem tougher.
Hearthstone these days not worth any $ spend in my opinion. The game is so unbalanced since a few years ago and inconsistent. If you really want to play this game based on rng effect and thinking is fun so yes you should buy some $$packs and enjoy yourself. As a free to play player since beta and 0$ money spend on game I can tell you it is a p2w game where you dont have control itself of board, cards your opponnt could get and bad matchups because 1x legendary or 1x epic is enough to break all your game counting on bad collection that you have.
i'd personally drop 40 bucks total in classic packs..it doesn't have to be spent in a sitting tho, maybe 20 now and 20 in the future or dividing them inf 4 10 dollars quota, that should be enough to get a headstart but if i'm being honest it doesn't matter if you pay when you're just starting the game and still haven't learned all the intrincacies, it doesn't grant you any raise in winrate, yes, Hearthstone is widely recognized for having a low skill ceiling but there's still a skill ceiling to reach first anyways.
If you're going for pure competitive viability, you can hit legend in 1 day from a fresh account (if you're good enough). But that would involve dusting all the cards you get to make one deck, if you're looking to make a good collection, I'm not sure exactly how much money you would need to put in.
I Don't even think that's possible even for a pro player, nonetheless and new player. Hitting legend on the same day of creating a new account WITHOUT spending any money is nearly impossible for the following reasons.
You only get 5 classic packs from completing all the tutorials and secret quests.
You only get about 300 gold (including secret quests) to spend on Arena and packs.
Even if you go infinite in arena, it would take more than 24 hours to grind up enough dust to create a decent deck. This is even if you can constantly average 7+ wins per run.
No matter how much you grind you can't make more than 100 + (daily quest reward) gold in a day.
You only get 3 (maybe 6) frozen throne packs, so you're still missing cards from every other set currently in standard.
Several people do this every expansion, this was done by multiple people on reddit just a week ago.
It would take more than a day to go from rank 25 to legend anyway

Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.
