So I've recently fallen back to rank 20 after trying out several of these "fast track to rank 1" decks and I have to ask - are there any additional awards for playing ranked matches? If not, Ill stick to my insane casual-play win streaks.
Ranked play is basically the Ratings way of pvp'ing in hearthstone, it's all about bragging rights, who's #1.
If you are really good, you can win some money in tournaments, or even become sponsored, but that takes a lot of time and dedication that the .01% of the top players attain, so if you don't care about any of that, playing casual mode is totally fine, have fun!
The main benefit is you get to play people close to your skill level after a little while, which is much more fun than casual imo.
Perhaps - but I prefer getting my quick wins + gold fast so I can continue building up my decks without coughing up a single dime. On my way to having nearly 2600 gold and aiming for 5k+ to have all of Naxx unlocked once it releases.
First the monthly card back for reaching rank 20, then the legendary card back for reaching legends. Then there's also the golden heroes for 500 ranked wins
But finally reaching top 15 of Legends means you get invited to a tournament for a spot at the blizzcon invitational. This is probably the biggest reward there is :P

If you find my posts to be rude, objectionable, or whatever, well, I got tired of writing polite TL; DR (Too Long, Didn't Read) posts at crybaby whiners. So now I just make it short and nasty.
If you find that funny, well and good. If you find that sad, that's even better.
I'm extremely surprised that you find Casual easier than Ranked play at Rank 20.
That certainly doesn't match my experience. Although who knows what odd matchmaking goes on under the hood in Casual.
Matchmaking rating (MMR) is a special internal rating system used for certain types of matchmaking. Hearthstone uses separate MMRs for different types of play, such as Casual Play mode and Legend-level Ranked play. Each MMR is determined independently and does not affect other types of play. MMRs are 'hidden' and cannot be viewed by players.
MMRs are used for the following types of matchmaking:
Ranked Play mode matches involving players at Legend rank
MMR is adjusted after each match, depending on the outcome of the match, and the MMR of each player:
MMR is gained with wins and lost with losses.
The amount of MMR gained or lost is dependent on the MMR of your opponent.
Casual Play mode MMR is adjusted quickly when a player experiences a win or lose streak.
All Ranked Play mode MMRs are reset at the start of each Season. Casual Play mode MMRs do not reset.
Why is casual easy in the beginning? Because your casual MMR starts somewhere, and the starting point is quite low in terms of play difficulty. But after a couple of seasons you will find casual quite difficult because casual MMR does not reset between seasons.
Why is ranked ladder at rank 20 difficult? Based on what I have heard, rank 20 is full of gold hero grinders. They concede games to get down to rank 20 (lowest you can get by conceding), use their full budget Warrior Control or Zoolock or Handlock or whatever deck to rack up wins. When they get higher in the ranks, they concede back down to 20 to smash more newbs. This much time in the season, climbing rank 20->16 is probably more difficult than climbing rank 16->11 because of the gold grinders.
Makes sense - though from my experience, RNG is MUCH nicer to me in casual it seems like compared to ranked play. I get the cards I need almost 90% of the time (it seems) in casual vs. in Ranked, I get dominated in 3 rounds due to not drawing none of my utility/defensive cards to eliminate control decks or taunt decks.
...its why I stated that RNG "seems" to be more in my favor in casual play as opposed to ranked...
Casual I get my lower cost cards more frequently, thus I can actually DO something in the first several rounds as opposed to Ranked, where it seems I always get my high-cost cards first, discard them, just to get them right back, thus forcing me to sit and wait till round 3-5 to finally play something, using the builds this site has claimed "instant rank 5" and what not.
Thus its why I asked earlier: Is there any point AT ALL...to playing ranked? Answer is No - I don't care for the golden hero, the special card backs. All I care about is the quick gold gains to keep raking in free decks to disenchant to craft legendaries or craft the cards I need. Thus, casual play has been raining gold for me.
Lots of people are just not "competitive" in nature, and prefer a more casual atmosphere when they play. There is also the possibility of ladder anxiety (look up sc2). Either one of these could be reasons you play casual, perhaps you just aren't aware of it.
They really need to add better perks to grinding for legend though.. There really isn't much motivation in the game to even make the grind.
- New card back for top 100 legend- New card back for top 50 legend
... etc.
Make the seasons longer and make an individual legend card-back for each season. Have a "title" similar to WoW for making top 50 legend per-say 3 seasons, or however many.
Just throwing random ideas out there, cause right now the ladder system is quite bland.
I don't feel like it gets any harder as you rank up. 12? 3? Feels the same to me. I have no motivation to try and get legend. I barely play enough to get anywhere. I wish there was something else. I feel like if I were to get to legend I would get there and be like "well...that was just like rank 3..." Maybe it isn't. I haven't tried. I haven't wanted to try.
Cause it's fun to become legendary rank and play at the highest level of hearthstone. It would be fun to see a breakdown from blizzard how many are at what rank on season end %wise. I'm guessing a lot at the very low then a bulk at 10ish and then again at 5-3 but that's just me guessing.
So I've recently fallen back to rank 20 after trying out several of these "fast track to rank 1" decks and I have to ask - are there any additional awards for playing ranked matches? If not, Ill stick to my insane casual-play win streaks.
If you prefer playing against weaker opponents then that's fine, but if you want to get better at the game then you'll learn a bit more in ranked. Your deck might do well in casual when it really doesn't cut it in the competitive environment of ranked. Still, sounds as if you're happy building up your collection so you'll probably come round to ranked later. You'll also get to play against more off-the-wall decks.
One thing to note is that matchmaking will eventually catch up with you and casual difficulty will be on par with ranked.

This much time in the season, climbing rank 20->16 is probably more difficult than climbing rank 16->11 because of the gold grinders. 500 wins per class x 9 = 4500 wins. Does not matter how many concede losses you get in the process.
That should more than balance out, though. Since, yeah, you may hit a extremely effective gold hero grinder and get trounced.. or you may hit him while he's tanking his way back to level 20 and get a free win.
Indeed, you should be more likely to meet him while he's tanking, since he gets win-streaks on the way up, but not lose-streaks on the way down. If he literally never lost when playing to win, he would have to concede two games for every win.
For now, there are two benefits that come from Ranked Play: Card backs and Golden Heroes. Hitting Rank 20 gets you that season's card back and hitting Legend gets you the Legends card back. In addition, winning 500 Ranked games as a class unlocks their Golden Hero. Since Rank 20 is easy to achieve, I highly recommend at least reaching that every season since it is pretty easy and there's no reason to miss something so easy to get. Whether Golden Heroes and the Legends card back are worth playing Ranked is up to each individual. Aside from that, the only other reward is if you enjoy climbing the Ranks and having Legend as a goal. However, it has been said IIRC that more rewards are planned.
Ranked Play increases your skill. To be matched against better opponents you need to get better yourself to be able to beat them in a consistent way. This again makes you better in other aspects of the game, especially arena and to be good in arena increases your gold, dust and card amount, which is important for you. Probably there are not great direct benefits in arena, but if it results in you being a better player it leads to a lot more income (Example: Even only 10 wins in arena can reward you aprox 350 gold + a pack, thats a net win of 300gold. 10 wins in arena = 90 wins in ranked.)

500 ranked wins gives you a golden hero, can't forget about that
