I agree with you that the deck is not strong enough to climb high, especially for this meta (So many paladins!). But I disagree with your opinion on Vex Crow.
Yes you could get doomsayer, but it is only a 1/101 chance for that. I myself have never gotten it. Yes you could get Lorewalker Cho but.. it's actually not as bad as you might think. Your opponent tend to be SUPER confused and often kills it for you; after giving you a couple of useful spells.
Vex Crow is mostly used, along with a couple of cheap spells, to refill your board after your opponent clears anyways, so you don't necessarily destroy your win.
Play like standard tempo mage. Constantly pressure your opponent's face. You can get a huge swing turn with vex crow combined with cheap spells. Good luck playing!
