Blizzard knows how much gold and dust an average player has. I'm sure that these numbers are much lower than most of forumers here think. It'll be interesting to see Blizzard publish statistics about gold, dust and legendaries like they did with ranking. If 90% players are below rank 5, I'm pretty sure that an average (statistically average) player has about 200 gold. Yes, that low. I personally currently have 0. In the evening it will become 100 after the daily and grinding, and immediately 0 again. I'm sure that majority of players spend their gold immediately too. The amount of dust in fact should be much higher, ranging about 2000 on average, because some people are saving for legendary, some are simply greedy. And an average player playing 3 months should have about 6-7 legendaries (only 3 playable), so he should be far from complete collection.
That's why even if gold and dust will stay the same, 90+% of current players will not be able to craft even more than 1 legendary from the upcoming expansion, so there's no need to for Blizzard to be afraid of losing money that way.
I don't think there will be new currency. I know Blizzard wants to make money, but they shouldn't screw over the most dedicated players who spent the most money. People with 10000+ gold and dust are the people who spent hundreds and played forever. Making all the gold and dust forever useless would be horrible. If there is new currency, they should be a interchangeable at a cost or something.
The expansion will probably just be slightly more expensive in gold and dust. Making older expansions cheaper will probably not happen now, but maybe in the future.
I just finished my collection in the most unbelievable way (needed 1625 dust to craft my last two legendaries, millhouse and cho, and last night's pack contained 35 dust and FREAKING CHO ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?!). I have 5 gold and 10 dust to my name. I think gold is the safer currency to stockpile, so I'm just going to complete my quests and play ranked until BlizzCon. I too think there will be an announcement then. Once I hear about when release will be approximately, I'll designate a cutoff threshold for gold, and then run arena until I hit the threshold, wash rinse repeat. I won't just play arena exclusively now because I am a horrible arena player and it's not profitable for me (yet).
