Beat all classes on normal and then expert mode in practice, then get each class to level 10 at least. Play casual, or ranked, doesn't matter starting out. By then you'll know which class you prefer, and you'll have at least gotten some new cards to start off.
I've beat all classes and now just have two more classes to level. I've gotten decent cards from arena packs and am narrowing down on class choice. They've limited me to the most basic start off decks so I'm not sure what to do now in order to get better cards.
play arena, play ranked, buy card packs with winnings, dust cards you don't want so you can save up for ones you do. rinse, repeat. unless you want to spend $$
I'd suggest using mage to start with. She has arguably the best starting base cards to use. She can win games in the 25-20 rank range on pure power alone with no cards from Classic or GvG. Also the Mech Mage deck is very cheap to make and can get you a ton of wins relatively quickly to grind gold.
Truthfully if it was me I would invest $40 and buy naxx and some classic/gvg packs so that you can build a few of the cheaper decks and have more cards to work with. I understand the free road and wont try to talk you against it if that is what you want but I feel money up front gets more value in terms of fun you can have then spending it later just hoping for 1 or 2 specific cards.
Outside of this I suggest you study some card decks of the main arch types you hear of on here. You can choose to netdeck if you like but even if you do not wish to do this it will help you understand what you are fighting as well as help you understand card synergies that would otherwise take awhile to figure out.
I was fortunate enough to get into Hearthstone right around the Naxx release, and looking back I realize that it was a HUGE help because fighting those interesting bosses forced me to learn every single card in the basic and classic sets, including ones rarely used in ranked or casual.
Use your Gold (or pay) for Naxx and enjoy learning some of the inner working of the game in addition to your basic Arena and Constructed.
Feel free to add me as a friend if you'd like some help getting started :) Cygnus #1727

I just wanted to add to this... I dusted A LOT of cards that I thought I didn't want / were useless that I really went to regret later. Only dust something if you're 100% sure you won't use it. Actually, I wouldn't dust anything at all until I've been around enough to know what classes and deck types I'm into. :)
Yes! that has happened to me as well. gotta be 100% sure of what you are dusting

while i understand the free road as well. Think of it like this. To buy a new computer game, it is generally between 40-60 dollars. Some of which also have monthly fees. I'd suggest investing in Hearthstone 20-40 initially. Purchase Naxx. That set provides a good stable of cards. I'd actually recommend using the remainder on Arena. The sooner you get good at arena the better. Doing it this way over buying straight packs does provide less cards than straight packs if you don't get a 7 win run. However, it also provides practice with both Deck building AND card interaction. You will get a Pack every run regardless. Like what the others have said, it'll help to learn which class you like because you'll get to use cards you didn't have and can learn about synergies really well.

Doctor Who? Dr. Boom. Timelord and Friend of All Daleks(Boom Bot).
I also have to echo the "definitely Naxx" posters, it should be your #1 priority. It is the rare instance in Hearthstone where you know for sure what cards you're going to get/unlock (other than the basic cards, of course), rather than the randomness of packs (which more times than not will suck and be useless cards for you) and in each unlocked Naxx wing there are always going to be at least one set of unlocked cards that are quite powerful and you'll definitely be playing in many of your decks. My winning % increased dramatically after having access to all the Naxx cards.
If you can afford it, just pay $ to unlock each Naxx wing. Or if you're a Free To Play player like me just save your gold from daily quests, etc. until you have enough. You'll be glad you did.
new to the game. Does anyone have any pointers or direction of play to take for the best results?
What cards should I try and acquire? which streamers should I watch so I can improve my game?

ive been following him and I agree he's pretty great. I'd have to check out trump teachings for sure. Thanks for the tip!
