Introduction
Hey guys, mcdm here with my first actual deck submission. After seeing Totemic Smash being revealed, I knew that I just had to whip up a Malygos shaman and unleash my inner Thrall amongst the peasants of Rank 5-Legend. This is my submission for Kiwiinbacon’s rastakhan’s rumble deckbuilding contest, good luck to everyone else!
here is a video of Kiwiinbacon playing the deck:
Changelog
12/5/18: -2 Omega Mind -1 Bloodmage Thalnos -1 Harrison Jones +2 Saronite Chain Gang +1 Prince Keleseth +1 Krag'wa, the Frog
Ways to Combo
Our combo without Alexstrasza can deal up to 30 damage, perfect against aggro matchups and other combo decks. Against decks that can go over 30, we have Alex and we can have multiple tries at combos by using Eureka and getting more spells with Hagatha the Witch.
The main line (30) is Eureka pulling Malygos and then following up with 2 Lightning Bolt and Totemic Smash, all for a perfect 10 mana spent. That is the maximum damage that we can do in one turn, but feel free to swap a card such as an Omega Mind for a Lava Burst if you find yourself just needing a little more to finish enemies off
The Deck
A massive majority of the deck is just survival tools until we can manage to scrape off of our combo. We can use Spirit of the Frog to combo withZap! to draw our 1 cost spells for the finishing blows with the goose, or we can use our removal cards and go from Lightning Storm into Hex into Volcano to draw our Eureka , and by having the spirit with stealth for 1 turn, we can almost guarantee a draw of something that we want. Omega Mind is not a card I ever see played, but having a ridiculous amount of survival tools against aggro I believe is necessary to keep this deck afloat. The ridiculous amount of lifesteal and board clears in this deck mainly from the shudderwock control package while drawing cards withBloodmage Thalnos , Mana Tide Totem , possibly Harrison Jones in matchups where opponents will have weapons can all help speed up by which turn we can draw our pieces out.
Matchups
Going up against control, keep Mana Tide Totem and Bloodmage Thalnos both for more draw to combo them first. Removal in these games will feel less useful, but cards like Hex are lifesavers versus big threats such as The Lich King or Hadronox or whatever it may be that our enemy throws at us. In matchups where our enemy has more than 30 health, we can Alexstrasza them to try and get them within range, but those pesky druids might be a problem. A possible workaround might be getting something such as Death and Decay or Death Coil from The Lich King , but obviously requires RNG to be on our side. If we do get either of these, you have to keep in mind that we HAVE to play it alongside Eureka with Malygos as our only minion in hand to guarantee some damage getting punched in, because We cannot drop the goose for 9 mana and still play Death Coil or Death and Decay which cost 2 and 3 mana respectively.
Versus aggro matchups, keep Lightning Storm and possibly Volcano if you are certain that it is aggro. Zap! is a great card against aggro, and these games we should shut them out with our board clears, life gains, big guys, value from The Lich King and Hagatha the Witch . Don’t be afraid to drop a naked Omega Mind early on to keep up with their minions, sometimes soaking some damage is the best thing you can do, and just stall until you get more clears and a rage inducing Healing Rain to put the pace of the game into your hands. Harrison Jones is not a good card in these matchups, and against decks like Odd Paladin where Vinecleaver is a huge value generator for them, Harrison comes in big and can cause some easy concedes on the spot from your opponent. Zilliax is probably one of the more underrated cards against more aggresive tempo-ey decks, and man this card just works its magic in just about every archetype it seems. All of his abilities make him so well rounded, gaining 3 health and killing a minion most of the time while only losing the divine shield makes him a great card even though we can’t take advantage of his magnetic keyword.
Depending on how well this does I might add more later, feel free to leave suggestions below! (Replacement cards going to be added later if I ever get around to it
Probably going to cut something for kragwa, definitely not zentimo because our board clears like lightning storm and volcano aren't single target so I dont think it justifies us playing a poorly statted minion that just soaks 4 damage most of the time.
yeah we probably concede if they have geist, but maybe we can scrape home a victory with eurekas into big guys like lich king or what not
As a control shaman (and all the many variations out there) with about 2500 games or so i would say this is garbage and has no consistence
Did you at least play it?
That’s not what op meant im pretty sure, he was saying that if he ran chain gangs hed run keleseth as well, and cut the other 2 drops including thalnos and the medics
great deck, i’ll be sure to try something very close to this on day 1
I would just like to point out that it is impossible for Prince Keleseth to ever buff Bloodmage Thalnos ;)
Put Zentimo and the New Frog Legendary in the deck and it's 10x better and replace both Mana tide totems. Also Beakerd Lightning is incredibly strong with malygos or just with a thalnos, so I think 1 copy instead of a zap could be a nice edition.
Neutral Cards (6)
Thanks for the feedback! Omega mind is definitely a weird choice and I’m pretty sure at some point I’ll cut it. I’m not sure I want to run keleseth just for the potential of having the thalnos stick or just using it alongside a lightning storm or other removal for more spell damage. My idea behind not running kragwa was having him get stuck in my hand and having him get pulled by eureka instead of malygos. Rain of toads is just a horrible card in general, can’t really see that being played. If we do run chain gang I think we have to go keleseth and drop the 2s of course. Loot hoarders also come to mind for replacing the medics, we’ll see.
I would cut it for Far Sight. The chance to potentially discount any of your combo pieces is huge.
This might be too slow of an idea, but with some setup you can get Electra Stormsurge to cost 0 mana allowing for 2 summoned copies of Malygos while still having the same amount of mana for the 4 card combo but adding 20 damage for a total of 50 damage which may be more reliable depending on how easy it is to get the Electra to cost 0 mana.
There are multiple ways to do reduce Electra Stormsurge cost, such as Murmuring Elemental + Fire Plume Harbinger or just Grumble, Worldshaker + Fire Plume Harbinger
Even if you only manage to get Electra to 1 mana, you still 37-38 damage, so I think this is worth trying out.
Malygos Shaman is an interesting deck, and despite getting absolutely wrecked by Skulking Geist, I think it has some potential. This is probably the best build I've seen so far.
As for possible changes, Omega Mind is a neat idea, but it might be too slow and/or situational. Once you get to 10 mana you're probably trying to focus on pulling off your combo rather than healing. Bloodmage Thalnos definitely fits, but Acolyte of Pain has the potential for so much more card draw--especially when used in conjunction with Volcano. Additionally, two copies of Spirit of the Frog could be unnecessary; I don't see its effect being useful more than once per game given the amount of card draw tools the deck already has. Rain of Toads is worth mentioning, but the 3 mana overload seems too crippling. Saronite Chain Gang is likely a better option here. I'm not sure just how good this card is going to be yet, but Krag'wa, the Frog looks like a valuable inclusion. For example, you could do Eureka! into Lightning Bolt + Totemic Smash (or Lightning Storm etc. for board clear) and play Krag'wa the following turn to get the spells back if more burn is needed. One copy of Eureka may be sufficient if you add Krag'wa. Finally, Prince Keleseth is a no-brainer if you remove Omega Mind and Thalnos.
These are all merely suggestions and none of them are by any means necessary changes, but I hope this helps.
