Lately I've been thinking about the well played button. At the end of the game I usually press it, no matter if I win or not. The problem is when I play someone who presses it just before they win, I often interpret it sarcastically.
My question is do you interpret it the same way, because if so I will properly stop pressing it.
Always hard to tell over the internet. If i am greeted, I greet back. From that point if the match is silent but ended with well played, I will reply in kind.
If I make a nice play and the opponent "wows", then that is typically the type of player that would be genuine. If i get emoted after every play then I friend the player because they have a sense of humour.
I either reply with another Well Played or remain silent. If I win and I get a Well Played, I always give one back out of politeness at least. If my opponent wins, that's not always the same story. Playing on curve or vomiting removal stopped impressing me in 2015.
Very rarely do I emote first, though.

Start of Year: Provoke the failure of 3 expansions, force nerfs on otherwise balanced cards, bring deckbuilding to an all-time low and get rotated one year earlier for being such a threat to the game's health. - Genn and Baku's historical entry on the White Book of Shit Design, shortly before retiring unpunished
i only greet with maiv and malfurion. i often spam wow with anduin and garrosh. I never emote with jaina unless i have played dk. i threaten almost every play as guldan. i tell my opponents they made mistakes as uther. these things dont really mean much lol. I typically dont say well played unless im playing rogue or druid as well
I always greet at the start of the game and say well played at the end, except sometimes when my opponent won by something like highroll and says well played, then I say thank you.
And sometimes when I'm not paying much attention I accidentally greet twice or not at all when I forget it.
I think if emotes bother people, they should just auto-squelch opponents at the start or when in the middle when they got highrolled or really unlucky, so don't worry about them.
Many players automatically interpret any emote as bming, even when it makes sense for them to use it at that time (e.g. Hello when at the start of a game, well played after getting lethal, wow after a crazy rng effect.
Don't let other players, even on Hearthpwn, decide for you how you should play the game. If they seriously allow a kids' card game to help get them angry or annoyed that is on them and their impending heart disease, not on you.

Silver Hand Recruit
Some people get triggered/offended by any emote no matter when it's done, some don't. It really doesn't matter either way.
I squelch most people at the start of my games so doesn't bother me in the slightest and i'm sure most people do the same. lol
Rumors are carried by haters, spread by fools, and accepted by idiots.

Hello!
I do not care what the opponent is doing. He or she can do whatever they want.
I always give my opponent a “Greetings” at the start and a “Well played” at the end.
