No, it's literally just practice. The more you play arena, the better you get. With 7-8 wins per run, going infinite or near-infinite in arena is not too difficult. Getting to that point, however, takes some persistent effort and patience.
3 wins per run (until you lose 3 times) will give you stuff worth 150g (but it includes the pack which is worth 100g).
7 runs or more give you at least 150g after an Arena run (plus cards, dust, more gold and the pack as possible additional rewards).
7+ runs are called "infinite" runs because they pay for themselves. You also get 10g per 3 wins (up to 30 wins per day = 100g) and you get ~50g per day from quests (on average).
If you do well enough, you can fund your Arena runs from within Arena: 150 gold in rewards is enough to immediately jump into the next one. They call it "going infinite". Otherwise, you just have to collect more gold and try again later.

Behold, foolish interlopers! I am commanding this mortal to spread the will of the Scourge throughout the interwebs, encouraging you to seek out me, Archlich Kel'Thuzad! Now coming to you as the tenth class of Hearthstone!
I am a finalist in this Class Creation Competition, so if you could give it a look I would be greatly appreciative <3
At the beginning you have to just grind the 150 gold each day but as time goes on and you get better and better to the point where you can just average 7 wins and that makes the infinite arena dream, you are technically not earning a lot of gold but you get 1 pack each run, enough gold to get into the arena again and then you still get like 15-20 extra gold.
I mean that is the whole story, rly. You play, u get experience, u get better. The more u play the easier is for u to think about what u should/shouldnt play around and in which situation, what turns are the swing turns, how is your deck drafted and how should u play to win a game and basically every aspect of it ...
If u rly want to get better in arena for "free", start on your non-main servers (Asia, EU, NA). Do quests there once in 3 days (or however often u like) and play arenas there to get better, it will require a time investment and the rewards will not help grow your main collection, but u will not "waste" gold on your main acc. Or if u play on your main too, u will simply have 3x the resources for practice ;-) Do this especially now, since u get free arena tickets on every server :)
I've been spending my gold on packs to get cards. Is this dumb and should I only play Arena with my gold for better reward long-term
My opinion is no - unless you want Arena to be your main mode of play. Otherwise you need a large base of Classic cards first, and Arena is always going to give you a pack from the latest expansion. If you have lots of cards from Classic then you could spend a lot of your gold on Arena, but then you aren't really saving gold for the next expansion.
You should honestly probably play the mode that is the most fun to you. If you think that's arena, good for you. Although do keep in mind that it's possible to go infinite in arena and indeed, you don't even need 7+ average win rate to do so, most people can't do it, but. That's okay. Even at 3 wins you're getting a value that's probably worth more then the arena ticket. Above 3 wins and it's going to be "worth" more then having just purchased packs with the money you spend on arena. On the other hand if you don't enjoy arena. And would rather be playing constructed, then although it could very well possibly be "worth" slightly less, it's still perfectly valid to turn down the greater value and go constructed.
Too many people Make it sound like its no problem to go infinite with 7 win run averages when if you check the arena leaderboards very few actually do.
What I do as what I would assume is a more typical arena player is average 4-5 wins a run and use my daily quest gold to make up the difference to purchase my next run.
I normally play about 5 runs a week so with daily quest gold and a above 3 win average it doesn't cost me anything.
I've been spending my gold on packs to get cards. Is this dumb and should I only play Arena with my gold for better reward long-term???
Nope. Arena is a pretty poor system to gain cards, as it takes around 3-4 wins to break even and 7+ wins to get ahead. If you're a highly skilled Hearthstone player who is very knowledgable about the game and knows a lot about Arena, it can be more beneficial, but the truth is the amount of players who average 7+ wins is a very, very small amount. Even averaging 5 wins can be very difficult, which is kinda what I consider the breakpoint of it being "profitable." The truth about Arena is that if you enjoy the game mode then you should definitely practice it and play it, but if you don't enjoy it there's pretty much no reason to force yourself to play. Hearthstone's limited format is one of the least rewarding in terms of card games, and you're likely better off spending time grinding on ladder than playing Arena.

Yup, most ppl who say that they r "infinite" arena players most certainly count the gold from daily quests into the equasion. I mean they r technically right, they can play whenever they like and how many times they want ... but playing arena is quite time consuming, if ur doing well enough that is ... so u can be "infinite" by playin just a couple arenas a day and dont have to get 7+ wins all the time. Also those high rolls balance it out over time as well, if u can get couple of 10-12 wins a week/month (depending on how frequently u play).
Arena is knowing the not obvious good cards when picking but the rest is purely RNG. The only thing you can do is when you know your deck is absolute shit go full aggro. Btw like the nubs saying git gud in a total rng game lelelelel
Im not gonna argue, that there isnt a big part of RNG involved on many levels, there is. But being good in arena is about meeting the good RNG half way or mitigating the bad outcomes to a minimum. And that will, in the long run, help u get a lot more wins. Yes, it might not seem like it, if your sample size is like 10 arenas, but play a 100 runs and u will see the difference.
I feel like there are a lot of good comments on this thread and a lot of ill in formed comments as well. Averaging 7 wins per run is not easy but its probably easier than making legend. Hitting the arena leader board is harder than legend though because just getting 30 arena runs in is super difficult and one bad arena run takes you out. you also can't say there are only 100 infinite players. Allot of people just can't play 300 (7wins+3losses)*30 arena games (about the average you need to make the leader board) +30 draft s every month.
Basically just play the format you like best. I have a 5 win arena average and usually place between rank 10& rank 5. If I focused I could probably do better in one or the other but I like both so I play both.
probably less than 100 people in the world avg 7-8 wins..
But you don't need to. If you include higher wins (that can give up to 400-500g) and dailies, along with a certain gold backup, you will never not have enough gold to get an arena run in. The "average" to sustain endless arena is much lower than most people realize, in particular, if you have a high variance. E.g. A 0 win run costs you 150g maximum, but a 12 run gives you +200-300 net gold.
So the trick is really just "to play", if you have "mastered" the basics. HS is a very simple game in the grand scheme of things and "playing well" is far less important than "not doing mistakes". The former has a vastly lower skill ceiling than the latter.

You probably shouldn't consider 5 wins the break of being profitable. Here's a table with known approximate arena rewards. As you can see, even 3 wins should be on average slightly more profitable then buying packs and 4 wins is almost always going to be worth more then buying packs. 3 wins, which is about what you should be aiming for if you're worried about "profit" is leagues more easy to achieve then 7 or even five wins. It's really just about "average". And just like the idea of going infinite off an average of seven, this doesn't mean that you need to win minimally 3 times to be profitable, just that that roughly needs to be your average. If you get a one win run and a five win run, you're still coming out ahead.

Also this. Particularly agree re high variance, two 10+ runs (if you roll high on the gold rewards) will give you enough for another four or five runs.
One 10wins reward will not solely finance 4-5 arena runs ... u mean the extra gold will balance the deficit from the next 4-5 bad ones so u can continuously play, right?:P
I've been playing Arena for some time now and I don't think I got particularly better. This post made me realize I don't think about my moves enough, nor reflect on my losses. This is the first thing I have to start doing.
Another mistake I make is that during drafting I really find it hard to let go of some cards and then I end up making bad picks for the current deck.
My third mistake is being obsessed with VALUE. I really need to work on my mindset regarding this...
And of course, every now and then I run into decks that I just can't win against. Yesterday a Druid-Mage played a Mana Wyrm + Coin + Mistress of Mixtures first turn, then 2 Marks of the Lotus in the second. Before I knew it I was a goner. Or a warrior with two 5/2 weapons that all went straight to my face.
I've only hit 12 wins once, with Paladin and I had tons of weapons and great minions then. I've had some 11 and 10 wins too, but I'm far from averaging at 5 let alone 7.
In conclusion, I believe it's not easy for everyone to get good at Arena. It seems to take dedication and the right mindset :D
I don't know about everyone else, but I find my success in arena is a little meta dependent. When I started playing during TGT, it took me a couple months to get to 4 win average. Until ungoro I averaged around 6 wins, and during ungoro I averaged 7-8 wins. KFT was the worst for me, averaging 3-4 wins. I'm so glad we've moved on. First run last night 7 wins.
I hardly use it anymore, but I recommend lightforge tierlist for learning to draft. It's made by the guys who originally made heartharena, and is better than heartharena since their split (albeit lacking the in-game overlay).
Finally big recommendation on most arena metas, tempo is King. Get the board, hold it, profit, repeat. That said, the current dual class meta may be more value oriented.

Are "Arena Players" dropping major coin to go on runs all the time? How is someone playing so much Arena that they've mastered it???
Am I missing something??

is the question "how do they afford it"?

heartharena will help you a lot when you are just starting out. helps you make less mistakes with your drafts.
as most of the guys said, keep on practicing. its the only real way to improve. and take your time with your turns.
loses may hit you hard but that shouldnt discourage you. just keep on grinding.
