Thijs' European Road to BlizzCon Decks
Thijs was over on reddit earlier today doing an "ask me anything" thread to talk about his weekend win in the European Road to BlizzCon finals. Not only did he answer community questions, but he also included his deck lists!
Thijs was asked about what he thought about cards which determine the games meta, such as Mysterious Challenger and Grim Patron to which he responded with a comment about bans being an option for Hearthstone.
Do you feel class bans are appropriate outside of Tournaments?
Would you like to see something similar on the Hearthstone ladder or via a different game mode?
Quote from ThijsSomething you can't avoid. You will always have some cards that are a bit stronger than others, and overtime this gets frustrating. This is the same in League/Heroes where champion/heroes are better than others. The difference is that you have a ban option. This is an option for Hearthstone.

Deck Spotlight: Budget Cutpurse Aggro Rogue
We're taking a look at Mazbaz's Cutpurse Aggro Rogue deck tonight. The deck has had success on the ladder with it taking Mazbaz all the way up to Legend, and several people have come back talking about how much fun its been.
Cutpurse was teched into the deck as a fun card but it ended up being quite successful as not only removal bait, but also a card which encourages aggro more thanks to a free coin for going face.
The deck is very cheap, coming it at 1600 dust and not even requiring cards from the adventures! Check out the deck below to start building right away and head on over to the deck guide to learn more.

Not-so-Secret - Last Chance to Enter
Week 35 of our card design competition is underway! The topic this week is Not-So-Secret, which means you must create a card which is from a class which does not currently have secrets. There's less than a day to get your entry in, so what are you waiting for? Go submit an entry and vote on all your favourites.
As always, winners get bragging rights and a fancy avatar border. If you'd like to discuss this week's entries, you can do so as always in the discussion thread. Good luck!
interesting rogue deck
I wish I could play patron as well :D
I'd like to see Blizzard implement an option where a player can select one class card that he/she can ban. That player would not be paired against any deck that uses that card. That player also cannot use a deck that has that card in it either. That would give players at least some small amount of control over the meta they experience. And if a card is particularly reviled then the only people facing it will be people that are playing it themselves or at least choose to be exposed to the card.
This would imply that the function of a portion of Blizz's game is flawed and would never occur in the first years of development with so few cards.
I don't know why people compare a moba to a CCG, but hey he is in a tournament.
Both games have a meta. 'Nuff said.
ResidentSleeper HANDLOCK ResidentSleeper DRUID ResidentSleeper PATRON ResidentSleeper
Every tournament zzz
I don't like the ban options, and I can't say I favor many nerfs either. Could be just me, but meh.. I do okay as is. If it's available to all, it's available to you.
I think most pros in the Hearthstone community are in favor of bans. The only thing bans would change is probably diversifying the tournaments a bit... look at it this way:
Player one runs Grim Patron
Player two bans all Grim Patron decks they face up against; suddenly they don't need to run Handlock or something to beat Patron
Player two can now run another deck
I get your point, but it's not like A) Handlock is the only thing that beats Patrons or B) Handlocks can't win against other matchups.
Are people just really keen on bringing an entire line-up that are specifically terrible against Patron, but can't because of no ban rule? I can't even think of a deck that simply fails to find a victory somehow, especially 1 out of a group of 3 decks. Certainly there are unfavorable matchups, but even aggro pally could potentially find a win.
Class bans seem terrible. Card bans seem even worse.
But that's just me: a non-tournament, semi-try-hard, random player. Lol
I hope Blizzard adds more play styles in the future other than Arena and Tavern Brawl, Ranked gets annoying after awhile and casual, well...
Casual is just ranked without the rewards lol
And that's what's wrong with casual.
i wish this game was deep enough to where we didnt have to make up these bs formats to have tournaments. every other ccg, you bring 1 deck and you tech it out against the field. the better players win.....
In this game, theres so many random made up rules, its actually quite ridiculous. players just wont accept that this game isnt capable of being a truly competitive game without bending over backwards.
Great thinking Thijs.
You've always been one of my favorite players, cept for the whole eating on camera thing you got going on.
This card ban would be great for Hearthstone. Finally we would be able to get rid of the stupidly OP cards that the devs won't fucking deal with.
Just like in League, all the stupidly OP champs get permabanned, and it forces the devs to make changes so atleast the chamnp can be played again.
It also helps guide the devs, cause they can continue to spew their bullshit "not OP" and "fine" and say "we aren't even looking at it," but when the whole community bans the champ/card, it proves the devs are wrong.
If a card ban was allowed, in similar fashion to champ bans in League(3 cards banned per player per game), Dr. Boom and Piloted Shredder, and a few others would absolutly, NEVER, EVER see play again.
Maybe the devs should consider why that is, and just fucking nerf the cards already.
Players cannot be allowed to ban individual cards generally. There's no reasonable way to do this without making them rebuild their decks for each individual match. You also would be banning cards blindly unless you could see the decklist beforehand, which detracts greatly from the suprise meta tech choices that distinguish top tournament decks from ladder ones. The tournament organizers banning a card for all is a possibilty, but that is nearly as arbitrary as Blizzard's balancing as it doesn't arise in an organic way.
You do see class bans from time to time, this is easily accomodated by bringing a 4th deck. That is the proper analogue to banning heroes in mobas. Card bans would be instead like replacing one skill on a hero with another.
Why does everybody play Patron in tournaments?
Because is the best deck out there right now
3 Decks, but just one Card of tgt.... seems these cards aren't fit in so much, at least on ctrl decks. Or am I wrong?
In tournaments, they need to use the tournament style were both players bring 4 decks, and each player bans a hero out of each of the four decks brought by the opponent. This would make tournaments more exciting so that we don't have to see grim patron or secret paladin as much (since they will most likely get banned out of the four heros.) This would also allow the spectators to see heroes that aren't used as much (rouge, shaman, etc.) which would make the tournaments more fun to watch.
