We are both basically playing since the beginning of HS, maybe the second month of competitive play. Nothing else special. Just play the game, do dailies and don't spend on things you don't really need. That is all there is to it.

Thanks for exactly pointing out the issue. You've had since the beginning of HS to build that collection without spending a dime. Don't you think it might be possible someone starting now will have a harder time than you did? Just to clarify that I'm also F2P and maybe started about half a year after you did, but somehow I can still observe the trends and difficulties a new player may face compared to in the past. You can't admit that it's getting harder and harder to keep up as a F2P especially if they just started HS?
Sometimes it still amazes me how many veteran players don't care about the new player experience just because they aren't affected. You know if the game dies all your time spent building your collection was wasted...

    Hi all,

To start off with a bit of background about myself, I've played Hearthstone since ~July 2014 and have maintained a F2P account. Ever since ~July 2016 I've consistently tried doing some F2P challenges where I limit the dust cost of my decks (which generally means only commons/rares and no adventures) to see how the new player experience is like. With the recent trends in expansion releases and top-performing meta decks, Hearthstone is becoming alarmingly expensive and unwelcoming to new players. I think it's something the community should be tracking and be aware of if they care about the longevity of the game. I put together some of my thoughts on stream yesterday and welcome feedback from the rest of the community!

    Cheers and Happy New Year!

Not sure about legend rank but definitely rank 5 after upgrades! Thanks for the support :)

Just as an update to the thread. The first list I managed to hit rank 5 with is paladin but ended up having to upgrade it with 4 rare cards to compete against all the legendary-card-back players with their fully-loaded tier 1 decks.

    Rank 5 proof and decklist

Here is the pre-upgraded list and the upgrade substitutions are listed in the description

    LOKShadow Plebstone Paladin
Export to BBCode Export to Cockatrice Export to MarkDown Export to Html Clone this deck
    Minion (23) Ability (5) Weapon (2)

Proof that just adding 4 rares makes the world of difference in a deck (went from stuck at rank 10 to climbing quickly to rank 5), and unfortunately it was necessary based on how stacked the meta is with tier 1 decks.
Congrats? My point was you should make a deck that doesn't die to Hunter/Mage spam with the least amount of advanced mechanics as possible. Getting to Rank 5 doesn't mean much because the majority of players on ladder aren't really that good to be honest. If you are a strong veteran player, you should be able to take it to most people even with a bad "deck" as long as you understand how to play around the meta decks that everyone just copies. So once again, rank doesn't mean much. Focus on what it takes to get a new player acclimated to the game and to rank 15 quickly since the ladder at the start is a lot different than the middle of the ladder.
Unless you actually tried you'll realize that to beat optimized meta decks you can't just use a "bad deck" even as a strong veteran player. The road from rank 10 to rank 5 is filled with legendary-card-back players playing tier 1 meta decks (even if the players are not playing perfectly, the sheer brokenness of some of the decks gives them the P2W advantage), so if these decks can beat that, what are you trying to say? I just showed you that the deck can be piloted to rank 5 and you say it sucks? It's not good for new players? I have no clue what you're trying to say... Please link a deck as an example of what you think is affordable and good for new players.
All I hear from you is theory-craft like "oh, a veteran player can hit rank 5 with ANY deck." While that may have been true in the past, it is absolutely NOT true in modern Hearthstone. I'm not saying a new player has to hit rank 5 at all. They shouldn't if they don't have the skill yet. That should be the only reason they aren't rank 5 though. It should NOT be because their deck is not good enough based on their card collection. These days your deck actually has to be good enough, and I just linked a deck that is good enough. Are you trying to say new players should only play the basic decks included at the start of Hearthstone because they don't have any mechanics?
Explain your qualifications for making the claims you are making about how these decks are not helpful to new players and that they are not capable to win and to rank up. I have decklists, tutorial videos, proof of climb, etc. and people are very grateful for the decklists and interested in improving them with their ideas. Constructive criticism is encouraged but I don't see you contributing any concrete examples or decklists on how to improve.

An old quote from the F2P OTK Warrior guide to reiterate my goals here:

Thank you all for the upvotes and feedback! Really happy to see a lot of new (and old) players benefiting from the cheap deck. Of course, I also see that many people are struggling, which is to be expected. I just want to make perfectly clear that a cheap deck does not mean easy-to-play or even "beginner-friendly." Why do I advertise it as F2P then? Well, it is F2P in the sense that you can pretty much craft the deck within a few hours of a fresh account. That means anybody can have access to it. The success of the player is then not limited to their card collection but by their skill, which is how I think the game should be. It also exposes new players to the depth of the game which may not be as obvious when you play face decks or curve decks like tempo warrior, c'thun druid, midrange hunter, etc. Although these other decks are much easier to play and are less punishing for misplays than combo decks, the sense of reward for playing a more complex deck is just on another level. This is naturally the case with any deck like miracle rogue or freeze mage that runs a lot of card cycle. Having more options and cards means more complex scenarios/decision-making than decks that naturally fall into play-the-topdecked-card-because-I-have-no-card-draw-and-rely-on-luck-to-get-my-curve-all-the-time-and-win-games-and-I-will-now-BM-emote-all-the-time-to-prove-that-I'm-not-a-bot-because-honestly-a-bot-could-play-the-deck-that-I'm-playing.

I will try to test out an "upgraded" version of this list and get some videos up.

You can definitely put it in! I would say all the <4 drops are non-core cards and you can substitute one of those.

Amaz has a great tutorial on this, and prepared decks for each class here on Hearthpwn. I found them very useful when introducing friends to a game. It's for Basic cards only though.

Yes, sort of what Trump or Sheng did, I used to run those decks in my early days. When new players graduate from basic-only, they can upgrade to these ones, and then... Come to think of it, what about a tiered challenge? Meaning, when new-ish players will be ready to go beyond Plebstone, it's still a long way up to full meta decks (for most classes, at least). I bet they could use some, say,  intermediate lists. It could be something like this:
    • Tier 0: Basic-only (done)
    • Tier 1: Plebstone (in progress, mostly done)
    • Tier 2: Not-so-pleb-stone... guess different criteria could be used here. Maybe allow for a limited number of rares (2? 4?), or set a dust cost limit (1200? 1500?)
    • Tier 3: TBD, if needed. Could be smthg like tier 2 but with somewhat higher limits... or perhaps at this point "formerly new" players will be able to manage by themselves ;)
Yup, I agree with the idea of upgrading the lists. What I have done in the past is start with the "Plebstone" version with only basics/commons and have a separate "Upgraded" list with up to 4 rares. Most of the lists will benefit from Stonehill Defender and Kabal Courier for discover capabilities to cheat more expensive cards into the deck (and also adds some more decision-making).
