I played Gwent a lot. The monster weather control deck is pretty good. What I'd realized while playing is that RND is what keeps games fresh. After hundreds of games I didn't want to even play because it was against the same decks. Nothing really changes too much. This made me think of early hearthstone days before GvG introduced heavy RNG, and it's a really good move by Team 5 to keep the games fresh.
ill try it when it launches but honestly the gameplay dosent look very fun. without minion combat what even is a ccg? id rather play hearthstone/shadowverse/Elder scrolls legends etc

I was watching some one of Noxious' videos last night on it, and I can see how there's an argument to be made they do have minion combat... even if it's not quite the same as what most games use. In that case it was siege weapons triggering off of summoning minions and lowering the strength on the other side (basically strength doubles as attack/health so when they hit 0 they do die).
Personally I'm inclined to wait quite awhile, the new positioning patch seems good but it really reminded me that it's definitely a closed beta where large changes are absolutely going to keep happening... and I really don't feel like spending time on systems that aren't near completion. After watching more gameplay on it I can see the appeal though, even if I really don't see it becoming very popular.

I hear this a lot from players about Gwent, but the big patch is coming and they will be adding a lot of new cards in the near future. Maybe things will be more fresh once these changes are live, but who knows for sure tho
Yea, I'm siding with RNG. Without it, you just have rock/paper/scissors until someone says "oh, rock is the best". Or, this game takes skill to be good. Really it only takes repetition. If your skill level is higher than someone else, you've basically been playing the game longer, and know how to deal with certain situations (and you call that skill). RNG adds a bonus factor where you could win. Even when you're pretty far down and out. And that's exciting. Take for example, Dragon Priest. You need a dragon, you keep drawing and finally get a Twilight Guardian, feelsgoodman. Un goro is going to be a great addition to this type of meta, because it will add more flavor. You can't beat Blizzard at their games. Don't even try. And Gwent? Just another meh game that you could play for a few hours then get bored. Sorry for the salt, but you have to speak the truth to be heard.
I'll give Gwent a couple more tries, but I couldn't figure out what the strategy was. I haven't won a game yet. The aesthetic isn't the most appealing, I think that has a lot of room for improvement.
@ADXE; I think the RNG vs non-RNG arguments are ones where people are probably just going to have to agree to disagree since they both appeal to different things. I'm a fan of RNG for the reasons you listed, and I think that it makes the game more exciting and keeps it from getting completely stale (even when things are close to solved like they are now); this doesn't mean that it's wrong for other people to like a game like Chess, where RNG is barely a factor, or that those games are bad.
Reducing RNG and allowing for games to be decided almost strictly by lines of play is great for the competitive scene, and I think that's the scene Gwent is aiming to be popular with. I personally think it's going to be an issue to have ignored how much variance can keep a game fresh for casual players, and I do think they're going to run into issues with solved metas if they stick to a release schedule similar to any of the other card games on the market. High variance games are more popular than low variance games, so they don't have a lot of breathing room on mistakes either.

It also has to do with the audience factor. Not many people are going to be intrigued to sit and watch a game like chess. But with Hearthstone, you can see that cards land on the board and people go crazy. That's part of the design. Sleek and interactive. It makes you feel like you're playing an RTS. Those other CCG you mention, they lack this sort of interaction. Either they're too gimmicky, or you can't see the action the way you want to. It's because they don't have the money to invest like Blizzard does. The sheer fact that Blizzard is making a ton of money off the game, and the competitive scene, makes Hearthstone in a league of it's own. You can compare this to how WOW beats other MMORPG's.

You described perfectly why I like HS but LOVE Gwent. They are quite different games and not all people love same things.
Casuals killed HS with their constant need for super swingy RNG cards being top tier for them to be able to win. It's really said that 90% of games are decided by stupid win or lose swing cards. Maybe it's time to try something new.
First things first. Absolutely ashamed to see the fanboyism here and hatred towards other CCG games. The Hearthstone kids, yes, kids can be a real jerk at times. This is posted under other games section. The main purpose of this section is to discuss other games.

That said, Gwent is great. Legends is great. Faeria and Shadowverse are great too. The only reason they are not popular enough to give Blizzard a run for their money is that they don't have the high production value or popularity like Blizzard.
Second, all these other CCG developers care about their loyal yet small base. You can tell they care because it's a small base, but I'd say they care because they love to do what they do and it's more than just making money.
For Blizzard, you don't matter. You are just here to fill the empty spots. They will raise the prices, make worse cards, have no interactions with the community whatsoever and you will still play it. They made more than $500m last year from Hearthstone alone and yet increased the prices. So much for the community.
The only reason the game is alive and popular is because of the Blizzard tag. Take it out and you will see the reality how awful the game can be. I'm not saying that Hearthstone doesn't have good stuff. There are a lot of good stuff, but the so-called hostile environment has taken over all the good stuff along with ridiculous RNG.
Last, if you don't know about other CCG games or don't like it, feel free to share valid criticism. Don't bitch about people liking other CCG game more than your CCG game.
I played Gwent. A lot of Gwent while playing Witcher. Half of my time was spent running around and playing and collecting cards. It was super fun. Then this standalone version came out. I tried and I found it okay. I personally had more fun with the mini-game.
Will I still play from time to time? Yes. Do I want them to succeed? Absolutely. I might not enjoy it like every other game, but I still want to see better games getting their spotlight.

I love Gwent, but I still think Hearthstone is better. I know you will all say im an idiot, but the reason I personally like Hearthstone better is because of RNG. In my opinion that is what make Heathstone the best tcc game out there. For me the RNG not only makes the games unpredictable, witch is nice especially in higher ranks and tournaments, but its also what gives (for me at least) a "fun" factor to the game. What fun is there when you play a matchup, and because there is no RNG one deck wins 100% if there arent any missplays? Again I've played quite a lot of Gwent, and I love the Witcher universe, but I do disagree with most of you saying Gwent is a superior, or more fun game than Hearthstone
I disagree, no one here should call you an idiot, hearthstone is an awesome game. I just personally prefer Gwent. :)

So by that logic, the more I play something the better I will become at it, infinitely? Boy it sure does make me wonder how there aren't millions of world champion chess players, or basketball teams, or football teams. After all, all it takes is how much time you invest in it, right? Being better has nothing to do with what your brain and body are more suited to be good at, yes? Heck, if a cripple played two days more basketball than Michel Jordan did up until his prime, he would, by that logic, be a better player, and a person with an IQ of 50 would be better than the current chess world champion at chess if he played at it more then him, right? :D
did Gwent change much since the closed beta half a year ago? because there were a skellige deck which destroyed everything and it wasn't hard at all if you figured this deck out. nearly all players were bad tho and thats why i got a 95% winrate and got bored after two weeks
There is a lot of nerfs and changes coming soon, but people are complain about a stale meta in Gwent at this time. They are going to have at least 500 cards in the game, before the end of the year. So who knows how Gwent will be long term, but changes are in the works now
I'm really struggling to figure out how to actually win - I haven't won a single match yet. Can anyone point me in the direction of a basic strategy guide?
edit: nevermind, I'm uninstalling this ridiculous game.

Don't recall clicking on 'other games' sub-forum. Oh, that right, new posts there show up on the front page. The more you know, right? I guess I missed the part where merely posting under the correct sub-forum obligated agreement and compliance with the thread's OP. Just because it's in the right place doesn't mean people have to agree with it, or even tolerate it.

There are A LOT of digital card games that can be argued as more skill based and way more fun than Hearthstone but the reason that Hearthstone is so much more popular than those games is because 1. the lore of the cards really touch on the world of warcraft fan base and 2. its just simply a really fun game if you take out all the boring netdecks and the unfair openers that happen a lot of the time.
If you enjoy Gwent, that's good for you. But keep in mind that Hearthstone has been around for a few years now and they've added tons of cards since then. The more cards they add, the harder it is to balance the game. That's not me saying Blizzard has been doing a "spectacular" job balancing the game currently (in fact I think they really messed up with the pirates and jades this expansion), but when it comes down to it, a lot of the aspects of Hearthstone is really appealing.
