I'd say it's a tad too greedy for a Bigspell Mage, as they already carry a ton of 6+ cards. But if they can consistently survive through the early game, this may be a powerplay to close the game.
As for Elemental Mage, this breaks the elemental chain, I don't think it's worth it. There are other powerful expensive elementals out there.
Neither really see play in mage, so I doubt this will. In slow decks, Baron Geddon is better. Mage was never great at midrange curvestone because of the lack of buffs and good transistions through the midgame. This is also lacking synergy with those decks, as they will have a small handsize lategame.
Maybe if odd-mage takes off, or there is a way to make a slower Aluneth deck??
Oddly enough, might fit exodia or some kind of quest mage. In this meta that deck isn't as much about surviving aggro as it is keeping control busy until you get your combo or jaina. Playing this at 8 cards would keep control busy for another turn.
On the one hand (no pun intended), this looks a very strong card if your deck is built around it. On the other hand, I feel like the right deck would be VERY expensive so I'm not that excited for it - very likely to be out of my dust budget!
Why not in a full minions deck with arugal and the spell that draw 3 minions. Plus mage has no problem to have like 5 cards in hand or more so it might be strong in a specific deck.
I wonder if it works like Twilight Drake, where it counts your hand size before the minion is fully engaged on the board and thus would count towards the minion cost. Probably the same but if not, remember Twilight Drake.
Well then i would just recommend to try and never to play it wile having 10 card in hand since you will get an 9 drop and well Majordomo Executus is an 9 drop you dont want to get(most of the time) but you might also get Mal'Ganis.

You are wrong about drake. It looks at card after being played.
If you have 10 card in hand and play drake it has 10 Hp but that is because it start with 1 hp.
Playing this card in wild makes me feel so sad because the chance of summoning old gods is really too high!
Anyway, nice card!
EDIT: But in standard, 9-drops are so painful that you can get Alanna or Dragonhatcher, avoid having 9 cards in your hand.
You can't play Astromancer and have 10 cards, you'll never summon old gods or any 10 drop
I was counting the number of cards in hand and forgot that you can't have 10 cards during the battlecry! my bad... I guess everyone does a silly mistake.
As a big spell mage lover, I think this card can be very good in this deck! In most of matches, I always have 7 or more cards in the hand, sometimes even burning some card because my deck is very heavy, wow, I certanly will test this!

Really nice addition to my wild reno mage deck.
I second this. Almost always close to full hand. Alternatively, I really liked the hand mage archetype and this is a decent addition.

Soo both epics for mage are revealed and both are somewhat lacking and not exciting... How nice...
Meh, pre-nerf Bonemare was better.

Disappointing. Mages still using most cards from classic set.

Might be a tech card in Reno Mage together with Cabalist's Tome.

Love the tribes.
spiteful 2.0

Feels kinda bad to get a 2nd rng mage epic card in the same expansion.
Spiteful summons doesn't see play in mage, I don't think this will either

Its 1+9=10

I like elementals and totems.
Uhu. I don't even think you can do that with Stargazer Luna. Battlecry effects trigger before "after you play" effects, right?
