As title said, I've just started playing this week and snagged a potential 1600 dust from this one card. It does, however, seem like Ragnaros is one of the most powerful and desired cards in the game.
So basically what I'm wondering is how to proceed. I have very very little dust (and have only crafted leper gnome, silencing owl, and worgen infiltrator) and am not sure if having a solid amount of dust would be worth losing such a strong card.
Alternatively, I've lucked out with a golden snake secret which I could DE for 400. I'm not sure if the snake secret is super playable, and I'm not sure I'll be interested in making a hunter deck any time soon.
If I do DE one or both of these cards, what would be a good suggestion for some lower budget decks that a beginner could put together? So far I've played mostly mage and pally and liked them more than the other heroes.
Golden rag? I'd keep it. Keep grinding out those commons and open more packs before you decide that you'll never use it. it's better to wait a week and realize you actually like it (or don't) than DE it instantly and never pull another golden rag and regret it.
I would say keep the Ragnaros the Firelord. You won't regret it even if you don't care for goldens. I would disenchant it if you got a normal one and needed the dust for something else, but Ragnaros the Firelord is great in any collection.
I would disenchant both Golden Rag and Snake trap, using them as a mortgage for now to improve my early game experience in general.
When I started hearthstone severaly months ago, my friends around me all have a much larger collection than me. I was an experienced mtg player and I learned hearthstone's basic mechanics fast. But it was almost impossible to play with them using only basics which made me a little bit upset. I was also having a hard time in completing quests because most people in casual or ladder had better collection. My win rate was below 20% at that time. I also tried arena, but it was not working for me as well earning the admission was just slow.
I then realized that although this game is not paid, but certain essential experts are required to build a playable deck. I started buying some packs (2x15 packs FYI) and disenchanting every golden cards and most legendaries to get an early fund that was enough to build an aggro deck. It was quite easy to build a blue/white hunter and warlock zoo deck back then with less than 1000 dust in total. After that, my win rate goes up gradually, making gaining future gold, packs much easier. Thus making my whole early experience much more enjoyable. Now I have 8 different decks, all the playable experts including 15 most used legendaries of my choice (not includng Loatheb from Naxx).
I understand how desperate it was as a new player with not enough dust to craft a playable deck which might end up not winning enough and ruining the game experience with only basics. Rag is one of the best legendaries available, but he is only usuable in a control/midrange deck because of his high cost. It's a deck that you will not be able to build for some time. Try to disenchant them for an aggro deck. You're going to be able to craft Rag again once you get the things rolling:D
Keep Golden Rag, Disenchant snake trap.. Always keep a top tier legendary especially if it is golden! you will regret it later if you disenchant him now!
Im gonna answer your question as a fellow player that has done this mistake in the past . When i started playing hearthstone i pulled golden hellscream . i thought "whatever , im gonna pull it again". I DE it for 1600 dust but i havent even get a normal hellscream since then . Hellscream is worse than ragnaros (since only playable in warrior) and i want him badly . Ragnaros is useful everywhere . So my opinion is to keep him and dont even think of DE him .
If you disenchant Rag today, you will undoubtedly see a juicy deck with him that you just have to try tomorrow. It's not like gold disenchants into 4800 dust or something; you're just asking if you should trade one golden Rag for one other normal legendary. The answer is no.

no he's askign if he should trade a golden rag for lots of rares/commons/epics that he needs to create playable decks in lieu of getting rammed by people with ok decks because all he has is basics and rag.
I also pulled Snake Trap way back when I first started and I held on to it. Never pulled a 2nd one but it's fun to run in the current Mad Hunter decks right now. Fits right in. I say unless you know what you want to craft with the dust, hold them both.
Rag was my first legendary and i pulled him out of a apck 2 weeks after i started playing, so ic an safely say Keep rag, he is a little bit RNG dependant but he'll win you more games than he'll lose you, also RAg can actually win you games you otherwise wouldn't have won.

Keep the Ragnoros, DE Snake Trap.

it's HEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLL NOOOOOOOOOOO
Keep Ragnaros and disenchant the next crappy legendary you find.
Bad players whine.
Good players adapt.
