This is the Discussion Topic. The Submission Topic will go up in 24 hours.
Welcome Back!
We took a break over Christmas, but we're back and ready to see the community get creative again! If you haven't already, do go check out Asylum's Gauntlet, our third class creation competition featuring unique twists from our very own Asylum_Rhapsody (with occasional input from myself). It should be a very interesting challenge.
Now, onto the weekly competition. We'll be keeping the same schedule as before, since there didn't seem to be any complaints with it and it works well for us. Have fun!
Competition Theme: We're The Millers
This weeks theme comes from Thelesis, whose "Meditate" keyword was the winner of our "Keyword Kerfuffle" competition.
Competition-Specific Restrictions:
Your card must thin your opponent's deck, such as by forcing them to draw from it (Example: Naturalize) or by pulling cards directly from it (Example: Deathlord).
Alternatively, your card may instead benefit from your opponent having more cards in their hand, something that occurs quite often in Mill decks in Hearthstone. This could be more than a specific number (Example: Goblin Sapper) or a large number of cards in general (Example: Clockwork Giant).
Competition Process
Preview Phase (Starts Now! Ends 20:00 UTC 5/January/2017) During this Phase, the Discussion Topic is made available, previewing this week's competition theme. Entry and Early Voting Phase (Starts 20:00 UTC 5/January/2017, Ends 18:00 UTC 9/January/2017) During this Phase, the Submission Topic is made available for your submissions. You may also, of course, feel free to give early up-votes to any submissions that you like! Voting Phase (Starts 18:00 UTC 9/January/2017, Ends 18:00 UTC 10/January/2017) During this Phase, the Submission Topic will be locked, so no more entries may be submitted. Instead, use this time to browse the submissions and up-vote your favorites! Final Phase (Starts 19:00 UTC 10/January/2017, Ends 19:00 UTC 11/January/2017) During this Phase, the Discussion Topic will also be locked, and a new Poll Topic will go up. Discussion will be allowed to continue in the Poll Topic, and it will also include all the qualifying finalists and poll to decide the winner of the competition!
Discussion Topic Rules
To make sure that everything runs smoothly, we need to reserve the Submission Topic for submissions only. Everything else goes here. What is everything else, you might ask?
Rules or Process. Do you have a question about the competition's process? Do you need clarification about one of the entry requirements? Are you not sure whether your entry adhered to the rules? Ask here!
Feedback or Ideas. Do you have some ideas you'd like to run by others before settling on one? Do you need help balancing or wording your entry? Do you need help finding art that will fit your card? Or do you just want feedback from the community on your entry? You're in the right place! Remember, although you are allowed to make minor tweaks to your entry after you've submitted it, you're only allowed one submission per week, so make sure that you've settled on your card for sure beforehand.
Discussion! Do you have thoughts on other people's entries? Are there directions you don't like that you're seeing too many people take? Or directions you'd like to see more people take? Would you like to help others and contribute to a greater community understanding of Hearthstone card design and balance? This is where you want to be!
All of that said, please refrain from the following:
Posting TONS of Ideas. Discussion topics become an absolute mess if everybody is posting a dozen different ideas. Please post not more than 3 distinct ideas at a time. Any more than that and we'll have to delete your post.
Advertising Your Entry. Please don't pop in here just to advertise your entry only to never be heard from again. This includes only asking short, generic, or insincere questions like "Thoughts?" or "Do you think this is interesting?". Yes, getting feedback on your entry is one of the purposes of this topic, but we're not just here for other people to help you. We're here for you all to help each other. 12 hours after this competition begins, there should be plenty of other posts here for you to give specific feedback or for you to comment on a trend. If you post your entry for feedback after this time and do not also offer some form of substantial commentary, critique, or praise of others' work, you may find your post deleted.
Plagiarism. Many people post their ideas here before finalizing them in the submission topic. Directly plagiarizing those ideas to post in the submission topic yourself is absolutely not acceptable.
So, without further ado, have fun and get creating!
Hey, folks! Just so y'all are aware, we did consider that there are existing cards like Divine Favor and Desert Camel that fit the mechanical restrictions of this week's theme but that aren't actually good at all for mill decks. We were trying to figure out what we might be able to add to the rules to prevent that, even just considering a disclaimer saying we reserve the right to disqualify entries so against the spirit of the theme, but the problem is that it's not so black and white. For example, in a class other than Paladin, like maybe Druid, a card identical to Divine Favor might actually be great for mill decks, or at least we could certainly see a reasonable argument for that. So, we're going to leave adherence to the spirit of the theme up to voters to decide. =)
Ohhh I like this theme very much. Immediately came up with this:
It's a bit of a two-fer-one and I clearly need to balance it (and I already know I made a spelling error in the first card). My big question is, since it's a spell and there's a possibility to put two of these in a deck, should I make it cost more mana? I would like to keep the 6 damage / draw 3 though.
Are cards such as the Daring Reporter allowed in this sense, Asylum? :?
GREAT QUESTION!
There are TONS of kinds of cards that are beneficial to or synergize with mill archetypes. Like, you'd never see a Mill Rogue not running Vanish, and Mill Druids love Tree of Life. However, we were worried about making the theme too broad because there's just too much you could justify as being good for Mill, so we're deliberately restricting it to just these two kinds of effects for simplicity's sake.
The king of mill cards! If you can make it to 10 mana with two of these and Vanish in your hand, then you can Vanish + Forbidden Poison, then next turn Forbidden Poison to make your opponent draw 14 cards (which likely puts them in fatigue). Probably too strong, but what's wrong with adding another non-interactive burst combo?

Or better yet, prep + vanish = 7 cards in one turn. I like it
Gadgetzan Auctioneer's traitorous cousin. This card allow Mill decks to draw to their combo / survival pieces but still maintain the mill pressure to their opponent. This card's cheaper cost will make it see play as a one of in Mill decks, especially since you can just choose to not activate its effect or use its body as a trade-off.
Do you guys think the card's cost and body is enough? Should I change something?
You know what, I'm probably going to post an old card of mine for this (actually one of the first cards i uploaded here), it fits perfectly for this topic, and i want to make sure no one steals it (the idea).
Hey again, nice to see the competitions back. Anyway I will get to the point. So this is the card I'm thinking of entering and I would like some feedback please:

My Entry for this week's Card Design Competition - Season 8.16:
The first one fits well into a mill deck. If you just attack face, it's three draws for your opponent. In a normal deck, this would be a deterrent against doing that, but it could also be used in Control decks. Circle of Life is something that would work in Mill as well as other decks. Any deck could use it as a tech card against Legendaries.

I like how Greedy Pickpocket forces milling, but the name doesn't fit the card. Gift of Nature however would be amazing in a druid mill deck, especially with Fandral available. I like it better.

I like this card the way it is. It would be insanely powerful for a miracle deck, and I could even see control warrior running it to force fatigue sooner rather than later.
You know what, I'm probably going to post an old card of mine for this (actually one of the first cards i uploaded here), it fits perfectly for this topic, and i want to make sure no one steals it (the idea).
Another excellent card. I am a bit annoyed by the text overlap on the attack, but it is forgivable.
This card in my opinion would be the nightmare for your opponent, since you would put super expensive minions in your deck and would try to get this card as soon as possible, and even if you are not lucky to get this early, getting it later would save you from fatigue. Enemy would take fatigue damage from both decks, basically 2x the normal damage. Mana cost could maybe be higher(?)
As another designer has already mentioned, this card is not good unless you want to mill yourself. If your opponent is drawing from your deck, they are not drawing from their own, and it will limit your own draws. I don't think there's any way to make this card viable.
Hey again, nice to see the competitions back. Anyway I will get to the point. So this is the card I'm thinking of entering and I would like some feedback please:
I like the card, it's sweet and simple. It fits the theme while also going outside of the box. I could see rogues running that card even outside of mill decks.
The first one fits well into a mill deck. If you just attack face, it's three draws for your opponent. In a normal deck, this would be a deterrent against doing that, but it could also be used in Control decks. Circle of Life is something that would work in Mill as well as other decks. At first I was going to say Fist of the Mogu was a clear winner, but Circle of Life is a hard removal that Druids need, and is very thematic to their class. It is certainly an excellent card, but against a Reno deck it's not truly milling anything so I cannot if it truly meets the requirements. @Asylum_Rhapsody will have to decide if it fits or not. Though I must say I personally love it.
So, here is my first idea. I need help with stat balancing.
It draws until their's 9 instead of 10 so neither player mills on their next draw.
Well, let's look at Coldlight Oracle for our base. 3 mana 2/2 that draws each player 2 cards. Your card is a neutral legendary, which is essentially the same card on steroids. If we make your card 7 mana (So it is ab-usable with Brann Bronzebeard) then to justify drawing 9 cards each, it should be a 2/2 or 3/3 still. Since it's legendary though, we can make it a 7 mana 5/5 and argue about it being balanced or not.
Out of curiosity, there is no rule that the minion HAS to be from Rogue or Druid class right? (The only two milling classes)
My instant idea:
I mean this does thin your opponent's deck, and can win a game by itself against a Reno Jackson.
@Lathy's Portal Warden: This is so easily abusable. Summon two Doomguards much?? 10/14 charge body for 4 mana? Yes please :P
I like the card, but it doesn't actually THIN your opponents deck, just changes one of their cards. If your opponent then draws the card as well as upping its mana cost, then it would fit the theme. Personally I'd make it cost (2+) mana less and summon it right onto the battlefield. Then it'd be a really fun shaman card for gimmicky reasons. I'd love to see a N'Zoth turn into a Ragnaros though, that would be mortifyingly enjoyable.

Fists of the Mogu is sweet. I like it because it doesn't have to be used in a Mill Deck to be good but it's also still very good in a Mill Deck. On top of that, I think it's fun because you get to choose if/when your opponent draws cards. I would totally go with that one.
Circle of Life seems a little boring to me, and as someone else pointed out, it doesn't do any milling against Reno decks. It still works against Reno decks because it's cheap removal though, which is good. I think it's a good card but I like the other one better.
He can steal jade ideals, helps you not mill yourself, and is just all around amazing in any mill deck. A strong legendary would definitely help mill decks compete against the current crazy meta.

What do you guys think of this card? It's really gimmicky but the intent is to combo it with 2 Coldlight Oracles or Brann Bronzebeard+Coldlight Oracle to burn your opponent's cards. Even without any sort of combo, you still burn one of your opponent's cards. The shards themselves are free to play so you can play your combo without wasting all your mana. They also are destroyed after one turn to prevent the board getting clogged up by minions the opponent doesn't want to have to play. I was considering making the Ice Shards cost 1 because they're more annoying for the opponent to get out of their hand, but making them cost 1 also limits the Mage playing Deep Freeze by making combos more expensive.
Aside from the milling, this also doubles as a defensive card, and works in a similar way to Frost Nova because it can stop your opponent from attacking your face or other minions for a turn.
