Hearthstone Live Q&A Recap - Nine New Arena Cards, Player Stats, Random Card Backs, Dungeon Runs
The BlizzCon 2017 Live Q&A has now concluded. Below you will find our recap which includes summarized answers from the Q&A portion of the panel and the nine new cards being added to the arena for a limited time. Be sure to join us on the forums to talk about the new arena cards. We've also got screenshots of the panel if that's your thing!
Present during this panel were Hearthstone's Ben Brode, Mike Donais, Peter Whalen ,and Yong Woo.
Quote from HearthPwnArena Cards
- The Dev Team has 27 cards for us to look at and vote on for inclusion in the arena.
- There are 3 cards per class with 1 card per class being added to the arena.
- The arena event will be a temporary thing, not permanent.
- The cards are not collectible.
Player Stats
- Doing player stats is something they want to do and recently they've been building infrastructure for it.
Druids
- They definitely want to add another Druid hero to the game.
- Finding the right hero to contrast with Malfurion is important. They liked how Nemsy was very different than Gul'dan.
- Druid and Ultimate Infestation are being watched. Statistically speaking though it's not a huge swing card, it just feels that way emotionally.
Random Card Backs
- They've been talking about card back randomization.
- The card back has been painted for the option, they just need to write the code.
Dungeon Runs
- Dungeon Runs should be fun for a long time due to all the different permutations available.
- They should learn a lot from Dungeon runs in how players consume that type of content.
- They've considered releasing more bosses to runs mid-expansion, but nothing concrete yet.
- They don't want to force people to play Dungeon Runs so there aren't any rewards.
- The only reward for Dungeon Runs is the card back for defeating the run with all 9 classes.
Fireside Gatherings
- Fireside Gatherings could be used to build a different type of drafting for arena.
- The Lich King event at Gamescom and Fireside Gatherings was really popular. They will definitely do similar stuff in the future.
Misc
- Morgl may be 10001 years old.
- They may rotate more cards to the Hall of Fame during the next Standard year. No announcements yet.
- Titan's Grip is Mike's favourite card that wasn't added to the game. He won't tell us what it does.
- In World of Warcraft, Titan's Grip allows a Warrior to dual-wield weapons.
- Peter keeps successfully denying the card in each set.
- Destroy a 4 attack minion is Ben's favourite Priest fantasy.
- They would like to add a replay feature at some point.
Winning Arena Cards
These cards will be added to the arena in a future patch. We've got a dedicated discussion thread up on our Arena Forums.

i agree with you mate.. they wont lose anything by giving us some rewards, and the players will be much happier..it's not like they lose wont make money if they give a little bit of something at each corner :)
They could even make a daily limit for how much you can earn in Dungeon Run if they're so scared of free to play methods getting anywhere. Like 30 wins in ranked which gives you 100 gold. That would have been so good. Or maybe they get to roll on a daily rewards table etc. etc.
All this talk about "Loot is great" and we ain't getting none.
Oh I see. Well, I might see a better solution is that blizzard imposing the idea of winning stacking up rewards, but losing a game to lose some rewards.
"Druid and Ultimate Infestation are being watched. Statistically speaking though it's not a huge swing card, it just feels that way emotionally."
that statement really made me laugh so hard, omg Blizzard. just accept the fact, that you fucked up hard on this card
One more thought. At the moment Hearthstone is having problem with new or returning player. Imagine, you're a newbie (or have returned after not playing for a 2 or 3 years). You opened your first packs, gathered a deck, beaten a few opponents ranked 25-20 here and there and overall enjoying the game. But then you are started getting paired with players that play serious decks. Either you have to buy lots of packs to continue playing ranked; or change playing mode (like switching to arena); or bear with it and get beaten over and over. Arena is a challenging mode for the newbies, to say the least. In case dailies can be done in dungeon run mode, people can still have fun, while gathering card pool to play ranked.
"They don't want to force people to play Dungeon Runs so there aren't any rewards." Ok, that sounds like a bullshit to me. Let's look at the dailies. They could be completed in the ranked, in the tavern brawl, in the arena - there's always a choice. You are not forced to play arena if you want to complete dailies. The same thing with dungeon runs. The fact is, if its possible to complete dailies in the dungeon runs - there's even more option to choose from. More options -> more fun. It seems, they just have other reason they prefer to remain silent about.
Seems like nobody is talking about that, but I feel sad that they made 27 decent cards (most of them are cool thematically and are powerful for constructed standarts) and 18 of them won't even make it to the game, while 9 others would be a temporary option for just one gamemode. It's great that they are trying to implement something new to arena, but is it really the best way the came up with? Adding 1 card to a card pull of ~500 cards?
This "we don't want to force players" excuse is so bullshit. Why make Ranked system? You are forcing players to play more and better (or just grind with unbalanced decks), not cool. Rewards in arena? Kinda forcing you to play until you get 12 wins or 3 losses, also not cool.
If you wont pay for it like arena than no rewards and good for P4F players too.
but it will be 1 run 4 card back showing off and thats it.... sad
we want packs, gold, cards for that RNG run.
This card back race adiction and showing off is what hearthstone is almost all about, exept that it is a great game.
Put your lagendary card back and the ediction is almost over for most of you.
The best thing like in real life play for fun and get over the eddiction like candies and more better cellphones and enjoy what you have.
maybe putting the classic card back and enjoy life. but thats a guru level player.. more than a lagendary ;-)))
Think for a minute for real ! why do you want to show off your achievements.. do you really know why ?
Play for free players (not me) are the legendaries in real life !
Just my 2 cents
If you sort all Heathstone cards by "Played WR", Ultimate Infestation will always be in top 10, while cards with higher played winrate are the ones that are played right before killing the opponent most of the time (like Archmage Antonidas or Bloodlust). Well, I guess statistics are wrong, they just feel it emotionally.
this is so stupid, just make it rewards. blizz wants our money and we'll give them our money. what else is there to consider?
Crackling Doom made Ultrasaur become a lot better Kappa
For me, I would play dungeon run, get the card back at 8 wins, then never play dungeon run again
9 wins?
was it 9 wins? my bad :P
I kinda wish dungeon runs costed gold but would give rewards, basically like arena. It would be a fun PvE mode.
They already mentioned that, they wanted to send Ice Block to hall of fame but they wanted to wait next standard year on one of the nerf patch. So, it wont be surprising to see it for me.
Warlock one is insane. I love Hunter and Shaman ones. They should be in the game.
How I can imagine a reward system that doesn't force people to Dungeon Run:
DISCLAIMER: Blizzard would never go through the effort to actually create a points system. I would, Blizzard. I'll do it...
Obviously some numbers can change, and everyone likes having points in the thousands or 10 thousands, so its possible to just go crazy and multiply everything by 10, just so people can feel like their 8 win flawless game wasn't worth "only 150 points."
